Why Crypto Trading Volume Can Be Misleading—and How to Assess Liquidity

High crypto trading volume does not guarantee that you can buy or sell a particular pair at a reasonable cost. Volume records completed activity over a period; it does not show how much is available at nearby prices or how far your order may move the market. To assess a trade, compare the exact venue and pair’s volume with its spread, executable depth and estimated slippage for your order size.

What trading volume tells you—and what it does not

Trading volume measures transactions completed during a chosen interval. It can help show how active a market has been, but it is not a measure of how much you can trade now at the displayed price. A market can report substantial past activity and still have a wide spread or too little nearby order-book depth for your trade.

S&P Global treats trading volume, bid-ask spread, market depth and slippage as separate measures. Each answers a different question:

Measure What it tells you What to check
Volume How much trading was recorded over an interval. The interval, venue and pair coverage, observation time, and whether the figure is reported or adjusted.
Bid-ask spread The gap between the highest bid and lowest ask; a narrower spread generally means a lower immediate quote cost. Compare the relative spread—the gap in relation to the midpoint—when markets have different price levels.
Market depth The executable amount available within a chosen price band around the midpoint. State the band, such as ±1%, and compare amounts in the same currency. Thin depth can make a larger order more price-moving.
Slippage The difference between the expected and actual trade outcome. Check the assumed order size and execution method; a small-order estimate does not establish the likely result for a larger trade.

The useful question is not simply whether a token has high volume. It is whether the market you plan to use can absorb your order at an acceptable cost.

Why reported crypto volume can be misleading

Artificial activity can make a market look busier

Wash trading involves self-trading or other trading without meaningful economic purpose. It can create an appearance of activity without showing genuine demand from independent buyers and sellers.

In an Oct. 9, 2024 enforcement release, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced charges alleging that promoters and purported market makers used artificial volume and wash trading to make certain crypto assets appear actively traded. Those were allegations described in the release, not findings of liability established by that release alone.

Provider totals depend on coverage and adjustments

A global volume total depends on which exchanges a provider includes and how it handles reported activity. Providers may publish reported volume, adjusted volume, or a figure whose adjustment status is unclear. Different totals therefore do not necessarily indicate a simple arithmetic error; their venue coverage or filtering methods may differ.

The SEC-hosted 2025 paper Aggregate Confusion In Crypto Market Data illustrates how concentrated exchange volumes were in its 2023 sample: the largest 10 exchanges accounted for almost 55% of reported global volume among the largest 250 exchanges. The paper also estimated a power-law exponent of 2.99 for the exchange-volume distribution and interpreted it as suggesting infinite variance. These are findings about that paper’s analysis and sample—not current exchange shares or universal constants.

Why the same token can trade differently across markets

Crypto liquidity is fragmented across venues and trading pairs. The same token can have different spreads, depth and execution conditions on different exchanges, or when quoted against different currencies. A coin-wide or global volume figure can conceal those differences, so examine the precise pair and venue where you would place the order.

S&P Global’s analysis covered Jan. 1, 2023, through Feb. 28, 2025, using Binance for centralized-exchange data and Uniswap V3 for decentralized-exchange data. Its findings concern selected assets and markets, rather than every crypto venue. One historical example in the report is BTC-KRW on Upbit diverging sharply from the global BTC price for a period during South Korea’s Dec. 3, 2024 political crisis. That episode illustrates a local-market difference; it is not a statement about current prices.

How to check liquidity before placing a trade

Keep the pair, venue, observation time, price band and assumed order size consistent. Otherwise, a comparison can mix different markets or conditions.

  1. Choose the exact market. Identify the token pair and venue you would actually use; do not substitute a coin-wide volume total for that market.
  2. Inspect the volume figure. Note its time interval, provider, venue and pair coverage, and whether it is reported or adjusted. If the provider does not explain its method, treat that uncertainty as part of the comparison.
  3. Compare spreads at roughly the same time. Use the relative spread when comparing markets at different price levels.
  4. Compare depth at a stated band. For example, record executable depth within ±1% of the midpoint and express both markets’ amounts in the same currency.
  5. Estimate slippage for your intended order. Use the same order size and execution assumptions for each venue. An estimate for a small order should not stand in for a much larger trade.
  6. Check again under other conditions. Compare at different times or market conditions. Order books change, particularly during volatile periods, so a snapshot is not a promise about a later execution.

When two venues are realistic options, compare their pair and venue coverage, volume methodology, quoted spread, depth at the same band, and estimated slippage for the same order size and observation time. Headline daily volume alone cannot make that comparison.

What EU transparency rules do—and do not—establish

MiCA Article 76, in the EU single rulebook hosted by ESMA, requires covered crypto-asset trading platforms to make advertised bid and ask prices and market depth public continuously during trading hours. It also requires transaction price, volume and time to be published as close to real time as technically possible. The information must be available free of charge in machine-readable form 15 minutes after publication and remain published for at least two years.

Those duties apply within the provision’s scope; they are not a universal rule for every platform worldwide. Publicly available data can help a reader inspect a market, but the rule does not make a particular pair deep or guarantee the cost of an individual order.
