Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If vMix shows “Encoder Overloaded” while a playlist is playing, your current production is exceeding the processing capacity it can reliably handle. The warning alone does not prove the playlist is faulty, nor does it mean your computer is damaged or overheating. Check vMix’s CPU, GPU, render-time and GPU-memory indicators, then isolate the load before changing settings or buying hardware.
What the warning means—and what it does not
vMix can play multiple media files through a List input, and its PlayList feature can automate playback of multiple inputs with per-item start time, duration and transition settings. vMix also supports streaming output to YouTube Live. Playlist-based streaming is therefore a supported workflow; the overload warning by itself does not identify the playlist feature as the cause.
In its article “What is the Warning CPU GPU Overloaded message at the bottom of vMix?”, last updated in 2018, vMix states: “Overloaded does not mean the system is damaged, or that it is overheating.” The warning means the current production is pushing the system beyond what it can process reliably. The cause could be the overall production workload, an individual input, streaming or recording, or a combination.
Check CPU and GPU indicators while the warning occurs
Reproduce the problem and watch vMix’s performance figures and warnings at the bottom of the interface. Note what changes when the warning appears, rather than relying on the warning alone to choose a fix.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Total CPU: This reflects CPU use across the entire system. vMix recommends keeping it at or below 70% for best performance, according to its performance-statistics article, last updated in 2020.
- Render time: This is a clue to graphics-card performance. vMix says a consistently higher render time than 20 ms suggests the GPU may be at its limit.
- GPU memory: If GPU memory reaches 100%, vMix says high render times, dropped frames or stutter can result.
These figures are diagnostic clues, not a guarantee that one component is solely responsible. Record the readings, the active inputs and the output settings when the warning appears. Your exact cause cannot be determined without your vMix version, computer specifications, playlist media details, output configuration and performance readings.
Isolate whether the playlist or another part of the production is adding load
Make one change at a time and compare the indicators. This isolation sequence applies vMix’s documented troubleshooting suggestions and performance indicators; it is not a vendor-prescribed playlist-specific test.

- 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
- 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
- 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Stop recording and streaming temporarily. If the CPU warning clears, those outputs are contributing to the load. If you stream to multiple providers, reduce the provider count as a diagnostic.
- Lower stream quality for a test. Try a lower output resolution, such as 720p instead of 1080p, and see whether the warning changes. This is a diagnostic and a quality tradeoff, not a guaranteed cure.
- Disable demanding inputs one at a time. vMix specifically identifies NDI, Instant Replay and video clips as inputs that can use substantial CPU. Close or disable one, observe the readings, and then test the next.
- Compare playlist states. Test the same production with the playlist stopped, then with its clips playing while streaming. Watch CPU, GPU, render time and GPU memory in both states. If one clip or input coincides with a change, investigate that input rather than assuming every playlist is a problem.
Restore your normal output and inputs after testing. A setting that removes the warning by reducing resolution, recording or destination count may not be acceptable for your production.
Choose an encoder setting based on the bottleneck
If CPU pressure is the issue and your installed NVIDIA GPU is supported, try vMix’s Use Hardware Encoder option. vMix’s Help 27 streaming-settings page describes this option as using NVENC on supported NVIDIA cards and substantially reducing CPU use. Check your vMix version and GPU compatibility before relying on it.

If the indicators instead point to the GPU—for example, consistently high render time or full GPU memory—reduce the graphics workload and check system compatibility before considering an upgrade. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU use; it does not establish that a GPU bottleneck will be fixed.
For encoder choices, vMix Help 27 says H.264 is the default and is supported by all streaming providers and computers. AV1 and HEVC are supported by fewer providers and require hardware encoding on a supported GPU. The same guide recommends x264’s veryfast preset as a balance of CPU use and quality. For NVENC, P1 prioritizes performance and P7 prioritizes quality; Low Latency HQ is described as a balance. Higher-quality NVENC choices may reduce how many simultaneous encodes a particular card can handle.

Those codec and encoder details are from vMix Help 27; do not assume a listed GPU generation or concurrent-encoding limit applies to a different vMix version or card. Check current vMix documentation and your hardware before changing formats or purchasing equipment. The available information does not establish a universal hardware recommendation for a computer whose specifications and measured bottleneck are unknown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a GPU upgrade might make sense
Consider an upgrade only if your measurements point to GPU capacity, your workload cannot be reduced acceptably, and the proposed card is compatible with your system and vMix version. vMix’s performance guide names a GeForce 3050 or higher as a modern mid-range GPU recommendation, while its streaming guide describes NVENC’s potential CPU benefit. That makes an RTX 3050 a possible candidate to investigate—not a diagnosis or a recommendation to buy without checking your actual bottleneck and compatibility.
