GStreamer YouTube Stream on Windows: Loop Prerecorded Videos with gst-launch

GStreamer can send a prerecorded file to YouTube Live, but gst-launch alone is not documented as a reliable uninterrupted loop solution. Learn the pipeline stages, YouTube settings, and practical alternatives.

You can use GStreamer on Windows to encode a prerecorded video and send it to YouTube Live, but the available official documentation does not establish a gst-launch-only command that loops files while keeping one uninterrupted YouTube ingest. A basic pipeline can play and send a file; reliable repeating or playlists require an application or playout mechanism that handles end-of-stream (EOS) without tearing down the output. Below is how to build and check the pipeline, configure YouTube, and choose a safer route if continuous playback is essential.

What gst-launch can—and cannot—do for this setup

gst-launch-1.0 builds and runs a GStreamer pipeline from elements. GStreamer documents file playback pipelines, including filesrc with decodebin for automatic decoder selection, and separate audio and video branches. That gets media into a pipeline; it does not by itself establish a dependable looping workflow for YouTube.

The official gst-launch reference does not document a loop or playlist-repeat property for the command-line tool. When a file reaches EOS, restarting the process can interrupt or reconnect the stream. Treat uninterrupted looping as an application or playout problem: the source must seek or reopen while the output pipeline remains running. GStreamer recommends that application authors use gst_parse_launch() to construct pipelines programmatically, but the actual EOS handling and continuity still need to be implemented and tested with your Windows installation and YouTube event.

Likewise, do not concatenate arbitrary MP4 files as bytes and expect a valid continuous stream. A playlist needs media-aware transitions and handling for differing codecs, timestamps, durations, and formats.

Pipeline stages and Windows plugin checks

A file-to-YouTube pipeline has four jobs: decode the source, convert raw audio and video as needed, encode them, and mux the encoded streams into a format the network sink accepts. The GStreamer rtmpsink reference documents a sink pad accepting video/x-flv, so the pipeline must provide suitable FLV-muxed output.

  1. Read and decode: use a file source such as filesrc and a decoder such as decodebin to expose the source’s audio and video streams.
  2. Convert: add the conversion elements needed to meet the selected encoder’s input formats. Exact element names and properties depend on the plugins installed in your Windows package.
  3. Encode and mux: encode audio and video, then mux them into FLV-compatible output for the sink. The exact encoders depend on the installed plugins and desired codecs.
  4. Send: point the sink at the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the preview before selecting Go live.

Before composing a command, inspect the elements and their properties on the machine that will run it with gst-inspect-1.0. The rtmpsink documentation identifies that element as part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins; its presence is not guaranteed by every Windows distribution. Verify the required source, decoder, converters, encoders, muxer, and sink are all available.

The documented sink example demonstrates the general form ... ! flvmux ! rtmpsink location='rtmp://server/path/to/stream live=1'. It is an RTMP example, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Do not paste it unchanged: supply your actual ingest details, check caps and installed elements, and confirm whether your chosen sink build and endpoint support RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest, while the cited GStreamer sink reference specifically describes RTMP behavior.

Set YouTube’s ingest options and start the stream

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical compatibility-oriented starting choice from those supported options, not a tested guarantee for any particular GStreamer build. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations specify stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

For H.264, YouTube publishes these recommended bitrate settings. They are guidance from YouTube’s current encoder settings page, not independent performance measurements; check that page again before an event because settings can change.

720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

Handle looping and playlists without losing ingest

For a single video, the loop mechanism must detect EOS and seek or reopen the file while keeping the encoding, muxing, and network-output portion alive. For a playlist, the playout logic must also coordinate transitions between files. The official references cited here do not establish a gst-launch-only method for either case that guarantees continuous YouTube ingest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If uninterrupted transmission matters, implement the source control in a GStreamer application or use a playout system that explicitly manages EOS and transitions while preserving the output pipeline. Test the exact Windows package, media files, and event workflow. Watch both local logs and YouTube’s preview for a gap, reconnect, or rejected feed; a successful first file playback does not prove the loop will remain continuous.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • “No such element” or a missing plugin: the Windows package may not include that element. Check with gst-inspect-1.0, then install or select a distribution containing the needed plugin and verify its version and properties.
  • Pipeline fails to link or reports incompatible caps: an element’s output does not match the next element’s accepted format. Inspect element pad templates and add the required conversion or encoding stage before the FLV muxer.
  • YouTube does not receive a feed: check the stream URL, key, selected event, network access, and whether the sink supports the endpoint’s protocol. The cited rtmpsink reference documents RTMP; do not assume that build accepts YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint.
  • Preview appears but YouTube reports unstable ingest: compare the configured codec, CBR rate, keyframe interval, and resolution with YouTube’s current guidance. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
  • Playback stops at the end of the file: EOS has not been handled by the playout logic. A process restart may reconnect or interrupt ingest; use a loop-capable application or playout system and validate continuity.
  • No local video window: local preview is separate from the network output branch. GStreamer’s Windows FAQ suggests trying d3dvideosink when autovideosink does not work; this does not fix the YouTube sink.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than building a GStreamer playout application, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and there is no need to manage a Windows GStreamer pipeline.

Monthly access is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start your free StreamNeo day.
