Those symptoms point to different causes. Start by identifying which one you have, then try the reversible checks that match it; a reported Windows Defender issue involved slow MP3 startup, not video stutter in general.
First, identify what is slow
Note when the delay happens and whether it affects every file or only one. Test a local file you know normally plays well, then compare the problem file. Record whether VLC is slow to open, pauses during playback, or visibly drops frames. Also note whether the issue is tied to a particular codec or high-resolution video.

- Slow launch: VLC takes a long time to open, or a file takes a long time to start playing.
- Buffering or pauses: playback stops intermittently while VLC waits for data. Compare a local file with a network or streaming source if relevant.
- Choppy video: the picture stutters or drops frames while playback continues. Video decoding, display drivers, output settings, or other active applications may be involved.
These are different failure points; a fix reported for one should not be assumed to solve the others.

VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ describes changing the video output module and testing hardware decoding. These are diagnostic changes, not guaranteed fixes. Menu wording can vary by VLC version, and the FAQ includes older guidance, so check the labels in your installed version.

- Open Tools → Preferences → Video and try a different video output module. Save the change and restart VLC.
- If the problem continues, test GPU decoding both enabled and disabled. The relevant setting is under Tools → Preferences → Input / Codecs in the FAQ’s guidance. Save the change and restart VLC before comparing playback.
- For H.264 video, VideoLAN also documents testing the in-loop deblocking filter and FFmpeg thread count. Change one setting at a time, restart VLC, and compare the same file so you can tell whether the change matters.
Changing one setting at a time makes the result useful: if playback improves, restore or retain that setting and test other files before concluding it solved the broader problem.
Check the display driver and competing applications
VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ notes that display-adapter drivers are often implicated in display problems and suggests trying another video output module when the output path is suspect. Its general choppy-video guidance also recommends checking the video driver and closing other running applications; it notes that frame dropping can affect smoothness.
- Close applications that are actively using substantial system resources, then replay the same file.
- Check whether your graphics adapter has a driver update from the PC or graphics-card manufacturer. Treat an update as a test, not a certain fix.
- Compare a lower-resolution or less demanding file with the one that stutters. If only the demanding file is affected, decoding capacity may be a factor.
If VLC takes a long time to start an MP3
Windows Central reported a case in which game developer Jonathan Blow said VLC took 33 seconds to start an MP3. The figure is one person’s reported experience, not a benchmark or a measure of how common the problem is. Windows Central quoted VideoLAN attributing that case to a Windows 11 update and Microsoft Defender quarantining VLC’s plugin cache. VideoLAN said reinstalling VLC or regenerating the cache would fix it. The report also recounts a user saying a Defender folder exception improved the problem.
This is a reported explanation for a particular launch-delay case, not an established cause of slow playback generally. The report does not include Microsoft confirmation or a controlled reproduction. Do not disable Defender or create a broad security exclusion on that basis. If you investigate the reported exception, keep it narrowly scoped and consider the security trade-off; the report is not a general recommendation to change Defender settings.

At the time reflected in the available version information, VideoLAN’s Windows download page listed VLC 3.0.24. In a release announcement dated September 22, 2026, VideoLAN said this version fixes slow Windows startup when daylight saving time changes. That narrow release note does not establish a fix for general playback stutter or the Defender/plugin-cache case. Check the current download page and release notes when updating, since version information can change.

Use the result to narrow the cause
- If changing the output module changes the stutter, the display-output path is a stronger lead than launch delay.
- If toggling GPU decoding changes playback, the decoding path is implicated; keep testing comparable files before treating it as a complete fix.
- If closing active applications helps, resource contention may contribute. If only one high-resolution or codec-specific file struggles, decoding load is worth investigating.
- If the delay is specifically VLC opening or starting an MP3, the reported plugin-cache case may be relevant, but it does not prove Defender is responsible on your PC.
- If none of these tests changes the symptom, record the VLC version, file type, whether the file is local or streamed, and the exact behavior. Those details distinguish a playback problem from a launch problem.
