A Fabric Cutover Can Pass One Check and Still Break Storage

A switch link, visible SMB share, or ONLINE pool can each hide a failure elsewhere. One TrueNAS cutover shows why storage migrations need layered validation.

A fabric cutover can look healthy at the switch while the workload cannot use its intended network, or leave an SMB share visible while its data is unavailable. In a retrospective published September 24, 2026, JJozzieTech described a Windows workload and two TrueNAS servers moved from a legacy flat network to a dual-TOR fabric on a workload VLAN. The account is a single incident, not a formal standard or universal recovery procedure. Its useful lesson is to validate each layer from the user-facing service down to the physical storage path—and not mistake one healthy signal for proof that the whole stack works.

Why the cutover needed more than a link check

The migration moved the Windows workload and two TrueNAS servers to the new fabric, and SMB mappings were repointed. Problems nevertheless appeared at several points in the chain between network and stored data.

JJozzieTech says the five-layer framing was assembled after the incident; it was not a checklist tracked in real time. The layers below are therefore a way to understand this account, not a claim that every migration follows the same sequence or fails in the same way.

1. Network reachability: a switch link is not host connectivity

A switch showed a physical 10G link, but the Windows host did not have a loaded driver for its 10G adapter. Windows recognized only its onboard 1G interface. Separately, the workload VLAN had not been added as a tagged interface to a TrueNAS LAGG.

  • 2.5G PORTS: This 6 Port Multi-Gig Ethernet switch is equipped with four 2.5GBASE-T RJ-45 ports that provide multi-gigabitspeeds capable of up to 2.5Gbps over existing Cat5e or better cabling.

Those are different failure points: a physical link indicator does not prove that the operating system can use the adapter, and an interface on the host does not prove that the server is configured for the intended VLAN. Validate the intended address from both endpoints and confirm that traffic actually passes between them.

2. SMB reachability: a listed share may not serve data

The author reports that an SMB share remained listed or advertised while its backing dataset was unavailable: the pool’s disks were not visible because a JBOD shelf was off. A client received System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found.

TrueNAS CORE 13.3 documentation describes SMB shares as paths backed by datasets and says the SMB service must be running for network access. That distinction helps explain why share configuration or visibility alone cannot establish that the underlying data is available; it does not independently verify every behavior in this incident. For a migration check, go beyond listing shares: connect as an appropriate client and open and read a known file. That tests more of the actual path than an advertisement or mapping does.

3. Middleware versus ZFS: investigate disagreement carefully

After the disks reappeared, the author says zpool import showed pools available while the TrueNAS GUI still marked them OFFLINE. In this account, a GUI export or disconnect followed by an import refreshed the displayed state.

TrueNAS SCALE 26 Early Release documentation confirms that importing exported or disconnected pools is supported through the WebUI or API. It also warns that manual command-line imports can cause unexpected behavior and system issues. This version-specific guidance does not confirm the incident’s exact sequence as appropriate for every TrueNAS release; use the procedure documented for the version in service rather than treating a CLI result or GUI state as sufficient on its own. 4. ZFS after interruption: pool recovery may not restore SMB

One pool appeared UNAVAIL, with all eight members shown as REMOVED. JJozzieTech reports that camcontrol devlist showed the disks, zdb -l showed intact labels, and SMART checks were clean. The author then used zpool clear, after which that pool came ONLINE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The author describes simultaneous member removal as a strong clue to a path event, but the account supplies no incident dataset establishing how often that diagnosis is correct. It is a diagnostic instinct, not a measured probability or a rule for clearing a pool.

Nor did an ONLINE pool mean that the application was ready: the author says SMB remained broken until the service was restarted, which they attributed to stale handles. The broader operational point is to check the consuming service after storage recovery rather than assume the two recover together.

5. Physical SAS/CAM path: symptoms can sit below ZFS

For another pool, the author says ZFS commands did not restore service. Kernel logs included CAM Periph destroyed and SCSI transport errors; commands began hanging as other pools were affected. The physical route to the shelves included the SAS controller or HBA, cables, JBOD backplane, and drive interfaces.

In the reported incident, the author stopped SMB, powered off the TrueNAS server, fully power-cycled both JBOD shelves, and then restarted the server. This is the author’s account of what restored service in that case, not a universal recovery sequence. When commands hang and logs point to CAM or SCSI problems, investigate the physical path and follow the applicable vendor guidance rather than assuming a ZFS command can repair a lower-layer fault.

Use the layers to make migration validation concrete

The author’s one-line challenge is apt: “If you’re running a storage migration and your validation checklist has one entry per host, you have four fewer entries than you need.” The point is not that every host always needs exactly five checks. It is that a single green signal can leave important boundaries untested.
