What does “lightweight” mean in practice?
A player can feel simpler without using fewer system resources in every situation. Resource use depends on the file, operating system, decoding path, drivers, and player settings. Startup speed, playback smoothness, CPU use, GPU use, and memory use are different measurements; one does not prove the others.

A 2024 study by Afzal Ahmed, Mohammad Tariq Iqbal, and Mohsin Jamil illustrates why broad speed claims need caution. The researchers tested 13 players on one ASUS Vivobook S with a 12th-generation Intel Core i7-12700H, Windows 11 Home, and 16 GB of memory. They played one 791 MB 4K MP4 for 3 minutes 20 seconds per player, repeated each run three times using default settings, and sampled results with HWiNFO. The paper reported average CPU package power of 5.1 W for VLC, 30 W for mpv, and 33.5 W for Media Player Classic. It also reported average memory use of 7,265.1 MB for VLC and 6,438.9 MB for mpv. Those figures are specific to that laptop, file, software setup, and measurement method; they are not a general ranking. The authors note that results can vary with the operating system, decoding method, drivers, and file type, and call for further investigation. The study measured resource use, not startup time or subjective responsiveness.

How to choose a player without guessing
- Check platform support. If you need a player across different operating systems, verify the official project’s current support for each device. The classic MPC-HC and MPC-BE choices described here are Windows-focused.
- Match the interface to how you work. Choose a traditional desktop interface for familiar menus, PotPlayer if you want extensive Windows controls, or mpv if command-line-oriented interaction and configuration suit you.
