Yes. AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are separate earbud models, not the same earbuds sold with two interchangeable case options. Their model numbers differ, and Apple says each case works only with its matching earbuds. Apple’s identification and compatibility guide lists the model details.
How to tell the two earbud models apart
Check the model number printed on the underside of each AirPod. Apple lists these numbers for the earbuds:

- AirPods 5: A3531, A3532, or A3533.
- AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case: A3439, A3440, or A3441.
The cases have different model numbers, too: A3529 for AirPods 5 and A3530 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Apple’s guide also explains how to identify a case using details such as the status-light position.

No. Apple specifies that the standard AirPods 5 case works with two AirPods 5 earbuds, while the wireless charging case works with two AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case earbuds. The cases are not compatible with the other earbud model, so do not assume you can mix earbuds and cases when replacing either part. Apple’s compatibility information sets out the restriction.

What changes with the Wireless Charging Case model?
Both configurations charge through USB-C. The wireless charging case can also charge with an Apple Watch charger or a Qi-certified charger, and it includes a case speaker for Find My. Apple’s published specifications also list volume control by swiping on the force sensor for this configuration.

The configurations share features Apple lists including Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio, and Bluetooth 5.3. What to check before replacing a case or earbuds
- Find the model number on the underside of each earbud.
- Identify the charging case using its model number or Apple’s physical identification details.
- Match the earbuds and case within the same configuration: AirPods 5 with its standard case, or AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case earbuds with their wireless case.
