To reduce LLM latency, first measure where time goes: network and queueing, prompt prefill and time to first token (TTFT), or output generation. Then choose an intervention for that bottleneck. Prompt-prefix caching can reduce repeated prefill; whole-response caching can skip model calls for eligible repeats; edge placement can shorten some network paths. None is a universal speedup, and each needs to be checked against freshness, answer quality, and tail latency.
How should you measure LLM latency?
Break an end-to-end request into stages rather than relying on one average. Measure the time to reach the service, time waiting in queues, time from request start to the first generated token (TTFT), and the time spent generating the remaining tokens. For streaming responses, also measure time between tokens. Track p50 and p95/p99 latency, not just the mean, and segment results by geography, request type, model, and cache hit or miss.

Use traces from your own application to find the dominant stage. OpenAI’s latency guidance says generation length, input length, request volume, and parallelism all affect perceived latency. It offers a rule of thumb that cutting output tokens by 50% may cut latency by about 50%, while cutting half the prompt may improve latency by only about 1–5% in many cases. These are provider heuristics, not guarantees for every model or workload. OpenAI’s latency optimization guide lays out a practical sequence.
- Record end-to-end latency, TTFT, time between tokens, output-token count, and error rate.
- Separate cache-hit and cache-miss requests so a fast hit path does not conceal a slow miss path.
- Compare p50 with p95/p99 by geography and workload to reveal queueing or routing problems.
- Evaluate answer quality and freshness alongside speed whenever a change affects context, model choice, or reuse.
Which latency bottleneck should you address first?
Output generation dominates
Try a faster or smaller model if it meets quality requirements, limit unnecessarily long responses, and avoid asking the model to repeat information the user already has. Keep the answer useful: reducing tokens is not an improvement if it removes essential explanation or safety context.

Prompt prefill or TTFT dominates
Look for repeated long prefixes and consider prompt-prefix caching. Also prune context that does not help answer the request. OpenAI notes that halving prompt length may yield only a modest latency change in many cases, so verify the result rather than assuming input reduction is the main lever.
Network, queueing, or serial calls dominate
Check request routing, queue depth, and unnecessary round trips. Consolidate sequential model calls when doing so preserves the required behavior; parallelize independent calls where dependencies allow. For work that does not need generative reasoning, a simpler operation may be faster and more predictable than invoking an LLM. These are among the optimization approaches in OpenAI’s API guidance.
How does prompt-prefix caching reduce TTFT?
Prompt-prefix caching reuses computation for an identical beginning portion of a prompt. During prefill, a model processes input tokens; when a later request shares a cache-eligible prefix, the serving system can skip processing the cached portion. This can reduce TTFT and increase throughput, especially when requests repeatedly include substantial shared instructions or agent context. It does not eliminate the work for new prompt material or output generation.

Google’s Gemini API documentation describes implicit caching for eligible models and explicit cache objects with a TTL for repeated substantial context. Google Cloud’s Claude documentation describes cache-control-based reuse, default and optional TTLs, and pricing differences. Those differences mean the relevant model eligibility, cache lifetime, and costs must be checked in the documentation for the provider and model you use: Gemini API caching and Claude prompt caching on Google Cloud.
When prefix caching is a good fit
- Many requests reuse a substantial, stable prompt prefix.
- The shared content remains valid for the cache’s lifetime.
- The provider’s model and request path support caching, and telemetry shows meaningful cache hits.
What to measure and watch
- Compare TTFT and throughput separately on hits and misses.
- Measure the fraction of eligible input tokens served from cache, not only the number of requests.
- Account for cache lifetime, any creation or storage costs, model compatibility, and extra routing overhead.
- Ensure a cache hit does not reuse user-specific or outdated context in a way that changes the answer or violates access rules.
What is the difference between prompt caching and response caching?
| Approach | What it reuses | Main latency component affected | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt-prefix cache | Computed work for a matching prompt prefix | Prefill and often TTFT | Compatible prefix and provider-specific cache conditions |
| Whole-response cache | A previously generated answer for a matching request | Model/provider round trip and generation on a hit | Freshness, request identity, and cache-key policy |
A prefix cache still sends the request through inference and generates a response. A whole-response cache can avoid the model call entirely when the request matches an existing entry. They solve different problems and may be used together only if each layer’s correctness and freshness rules are sound.
When should you use whole-response caching?
Whole-response caching serves a stored answer instead of calling the model again. Cloudflare AI Gateway documents a cache that can avoid a round trip to the origin provider for identical requests, with text and image response support. The documented cache is disabled by default and currently uses exact request matching; its key includes provider, endpoint, model, authentication header, and the full request body. A change to messages, tools, or model parameters creates a separate entry. The feature’s current behavior is described in Cloudflare AI Gateway’s caching documentation.
Good candidates
Repeated, bounded requests—such as a fixed set of support choices or stable non-dynamic content—may have enough exact repeats to justify caching. Estimate the hit rate from real traffic and compare hit latency with miss latency before enabling it broadly.

Requests to keep out of a shared cache
- Requests that depend on current information or changing source data.
- Personalized answers or prompts containing user-specific context.
- Requests whose answer depends on permissions that may change.
- Requests that trigger side effects rather than merely return content.
Use a freshness window appropriate to the data and invalidate entries when source content, access rights, or answer validity changes. The documented Cloudflare cache is exact-match; semantic matching is not presented as a current built-in feature on that page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does edge inference make an LLM faster?
It can reduce network distance for users whose requests are served closer to them, but it does not make model computation disappear or guarantee lower end-to-end latency. An edge gateway can also enforce policy, collect telemetry, and serve eligible cached responses without a trip to the model provider. Cloudflare describes edge inference, AI Gateway caching, and KV for frequent responses in its AI applications documentation.
Keep edge inference and edge caching distinct in the design: edge inference changes where the model runs; edge caching changes where an eligible repeated response can be served. Edge placement is most promising when network round trips are a measured part of the delay or a nearby cache can serve a meaningful share of traffic. It may have little effect when generation dominates, cache misses are common, inference is routed elsewhere, or an added edge hop increases the path.
Compare end-to-end p50 and p95/p99 by geography and cache status. Include error rate, freshness, and answer quality in the comparison; a faster but stale or incorrect response is not a successful latency optimization.

How can teams optimize a self-managed inference stack?
For teams operating their own serving layer, routing and model execution can be tuned alongside caching. Google Cloud’s engineering article describes several approaches and the tradeoffs involved; the right choice depends on the workload and infrastructure.
Route work to a suitable model or replica
Send simpler requests to a smaller model tier when evaluation shows it preserves quality. For repeated prefixes, route requests to replicas that already hold the matching prefix cache where practical. Cache-aware routing can improve hit probability, but adds coordination and may constrain load balancing.
Separate prefill and decode resources
Disaggregating prefill and decode can let infrastructure scale for the different resource demands of processing prompts and generating tokens. It adds operational complexity and coordination, so validate the effect under the actual request mix rather than treating it as a free speedup.

Quantization reduces weight memory footprint and may improve decode speed, but requires quality evaluation for the target tasks. Speculative decoding has a smaller draft model propose tokens for verification by a larger target model; it introduces system complexity and may increase compute requirements.
Google Cloud reports case-study results from its GKE Inference Gateway in 2026: 35% faster TTFT for Qwen3-Coder on context-heavy coding-agent workloads; a 52% improvement in p95 tail latency for DeepSeek V3.1 on bursty chat workloads; and prefix-cache hit rate rising from 35% to 70%. These are vendor-reported results for those named systems and workloads, not independent comparative benchmarks or expected outcomes for arbitrary deployments. Details are in Google Cloud’s LLM inference engineering article.
How do you reduce latency without lowering answer quality?
Treat speed and quality as joint acceptance criteria. Before changing production traffic, define a latency target and a quality baseline for representative requests. Then test one change at a time where possible, including both hit and miss paths, and evaluate realistic burst and geographic conditions.
Quick Recap
- For model or quantization changes, compare answer correctness and task-specific quality against the current system.
- For shorter outputs or pruned context, verify that essential details and instructions remain.
- For response caching, test freshness, personalization, authorization changes, and invalidation behavior.
- For routing or edge changes, compare end-to-end tail latency and errors as well as TTFT.
- For every optimization, monitor cache hit rate, TTFT, time between tokens, end-to-end latency, p95/p99, freshness, and output quality after rollout.
