To use voice-to-text on a Galaxy phone or tablet, enable a voice-input option, select it in Samsung Keyboard settings, then tap the keyboard’s microphone in a text field. Samsung’s instructions offer Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing; the exact menu labels may vary by device, software version, and country.
Choose and enable a voice-input option

If you want to use Google Voice Typing, turn on its toggle here. Samsung says it may need to be enabled before you can select it in Samsung Keyboard settings.

Return to the keyboard settings, tap Samsung Keyboard, then Voice input.

Select Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. Samsung voice input works only with Samsung Keyboard, according to Samsung Support.
On some devices, you can also open Samsung Keyboard settings by tapping the keyboard’s gear icon, then choose Voice input. Samsung’s new-device guide describes this route and related controls for keyboard language, voice-input language, and offensive-word filtering.

Dictate into a text field

Open an app with a text box, such as a messaging, notes, or search app.

Tap the text box to bring up Samsung Keyboard, then tap the microphone icon.

If prompted the first time, accept the terms or grant the requested permissions. Speak while the microphone control is active.
The same basic process applies on Galaxy tablets: open an app that uses the keyboard, tap the microphone, and follow any initial terms or permission prompt. See Samsung’s tablet keyboard guidance.

Set a language or download offline voice input
Samsung’s US keyboard guide describes language selection under Offline voice input and an Install offline language pack option. Check the voice-input settings on your own device for available languages and downloads; Samsung’s guidance does not establish a complete language list or guarantee that offline packs are available on every model.
If the microphone is missing or voice input will not start

Check the selected input method. In Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default, confirm the voice-input option you want is enabled. Then check Samsung Keyboard > Voice input and select it.

For Google Voice Typing, enable its toggle first. Samsung’s setup sequence places that toggle in Keyboard list and default before selecting Google Voice Typing in Samsung Keyboard settings.

Respond to first-use prompts. Accept any terms or grant the permissions requested when you first tap the microphone.

Check which keyboard is active. Samsung voice input is available only when using Samsung Keyboard. If you are using another keyboard, select Samsung Keyboard or choose an input method compatible with the keyboard you use.

Allow for menu differences. Screen layouts and settings can differ by model, software version, and country. Samsung’s Canada support page, updated March 28, 2026, notes that its steps apply to the default Samsung Keyboard and that screens and settings may vary by country.
