Before choosing, check your camera body, lens, dimensions, accessories, control support, and the stabilizer’s balancing requirements. These five options cover motorized gimbals, a manual sled, and professional modular rigs; they are not a universal ranking.
How to choose a stabilizer for a camera you already own
Start with your working setup, not the camera body alone. A gimbal’s payload limit does not prove that a particular camera and lens will balance or clear its frame. Lens length, body dimensions, accessories, balance range, and supported camera controls can all affect fit. Check the stabilizer maker’s current compatibility information and, where available, its tested camera-and-lens combinations before buying. DJI’s Ronin comparison lists tested combinations, while Hohem publishes distinct dimensions and load limits for its MT3 models.

- Fit: Confirm the complete camera, lens, and accessory configuration, plus physical clearance and control compatibility.
- Movement: Choose between motorized stabilization and a manually operated sled; they require different operating techniques.
- On-set practicality: Consider the rig’s operating weight, balance and setup time, battery needs, ergonomics, and how often you need to switch cameras or support modes.
Five video camera stabilizers to consider
1. DJI RS 4 Pro: one-handed motorized gimbal
This is a motorized option for shooters who want a one-handed camera gimbal stabilizer. Videomaker’s 2025 buyer guide names the RS 4 Pro its best one-handed camera stabilizer and lists payload up to 10 pounds; that is the guide’s dated product claim, not a guarantee that every camera-and-lens setup below that weight will fit. Consult Videomaker’s guide alongside DJI’s model comparison for exact tested camera/lens combinations and current model specifications. Verify control support and clearance for your own setup.

2. Glidecam XR-PRO: non-motorized sled
The XR-PRO is a manual alternative for operators who prefer a counterbalanced sled over motors and batteries. Videomaker describes a handle, counterbalance weights, telescoping center post, and dynamic balance platform. The trade-off is hands-on balancing and a learning curve: smooth footage depends on practiced operator movement, rather than powered correction. Videomaker’s buyer guide discusses this model and non-motorized systems.

3. Zhiyun Crane 4: professional motorized gimbal
The Crane 4 is a three-axis gimbal option aimed at professional use with DSLR, mirrorless, and cine cameras. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide discusses its approximate weight, battery-life details, and use-oriented strengths and drawbacks. Treat those as the publication’s reported product information, not independent testing for this article; check the current maker information and compatibility guidance for your exact camera and lens before purchasing. Read Digital Camera World’s gimbal guide.
4. Hohem iSteady MT3 or MT3 Pro: check the model-specific fit limits
These gimbals are worth considering when compatibility details are central to the decision, but the two models have different limits. Hohem’s FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, lists a maximum load of 1.4 kg for MT3 and 2.5 kg for MT3 Pro, and also specifies camera dimensions and camera-plus-lens length limits. These are manufacturer figures; do not apply one model’s figures to the other or treat a load figure as proof of fit. Check Hohem’s current compatibility list and balance the rig before powering it on; Hohem says balancing first helps avoid motor overheating. See Hohem’s MT3-series FAQ.

5. ARRI TRINITY 2 / ARTEMIS 2: professional modular systems
These are high-end production systems, not everyday consumer alternatives. ARRI documents shared components, camera-specific SAM plates, and transitions between rig and tripod configurations. The company says TRINITY 2 and ARTEMIS 2 share 80% of new components; this is ARRI’s own product-page statement, not an independent measurement. Because plates are camera-specific, confirm the appropriate plate and camera configuration with ARRI’s system information. Review ARRI’s TRINITY 2 and ARTEMIS 2 details.

What changes between motorized gimbals and a manual sled
Motorized gimbals rely on powered axes, so they need batteries and careful balance. With a camera mounted, a gimbal may also become tiring to hold over a long shoot; consider the complete operating weight and the maker’s stated runtime conditions, rather than judging from the bare stabilizer. Balance before switching a motorized unit on.

A non-motorized sled avoids motors and batteries, but it does not remove the work: the operator must balance the camera and learn to move smoothly. That can suit a shooter who wants manual control and accepts the practice required. Neither approach is automatically better; match the operating method to the shots, crew, and time available for setup.

- Write down the full rig: List the camera body, lens, filter, microphone, monitor, cage, battery, and any other accessory you expect to keep mounted.
- Check the exact model’s compatibility information: Use the manufacturer’s current list and tested combinations where available. For MT3 versus MT3 Pro, use the separate load, dimension, and lens-length limits in Hohem’s FAQ.
- Check balance and clearance: Confirm the combination can be mounted and balanced through the movement you need. A total weight below a stated maximum does not settle these questions.
- Check camera controls and accessories: Confirm the stabilizer supports the functions you intend to operate and that any plate or other accessory is made for that system and camera.
- Plan the working day: Account for setup time, operating weight, battery charging or replacement, and whether your production needs quick transitions between configurations.
Product specifications, firmware support, compatibility, availability, and prices can change. Recheck the maker’s current documentation before ordering, especially if your camera or lens is not explicitly listed.
