To make Android Auto less distracting, set up your route and media while parked, filter unwanted notifications with Android’s Driving mode, and use voice or compatible steering-wheel controls to reduce screen taps. These settings can limit interruptions, but they do not make it safe to manage messages while driving.
Set up Android Auto before the car moves
Connect your phone, confirm Android Auto is working, choose your route, and set your audio before you start driving. Google advises setting up Android Auto with the vehicle in Park and allowing time before beginning the drive. Its guidance is direct: “Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.” Google’s Android Auto setup instructions cover getting started; if your vehicle’s wired or wireless pairing steps differ, check the vehicle manual.

- Connect the phone and confirm the car display shows Android Auto.
- Enter and check your destination, then start navigation.
- Choose your audio and make any needed setting changes while parked.
Use Driving mode to filter interruptions
Android’s Driving mode can activate while you drive and apply notification filters. You can choose which people, apps, and interruption types are blocked or allowed. It is a filter, not a guarantee that every alert will disappear: what gets through depends on your selections, and critical system notifications may still appear.

- Tap Modes, then Driving, and set up Driving mode.
- Under automatic activation, select While driving.
- Review the notification filters and decide which people, apps, and interruption types you want to allow.
Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later, and menu names and availability vary by phone. If these labels do not match your device, check the manufacturer’s instructions. See Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb.

Reduce screen contact with voice and vehicle controls
Android Auto supports voice commands for navigation, calls, messages, and media. Depending on your device and setup, you can say “Hey Google,” tap the on-screen microphone, or press and hold a compatible steering-wheel voice-command button to invoke Gemini or Google Assistant. Availability and behavior can vary by vehicle, phone, language, and app. Google documents the current options in its guide to talking to Gemini or Google Assistant.
Voice control may reduce the need to touch the display, but it does not make every command or conversation distraction-free. If a task can wait, wait until you are parked.

Android Auto also uses large icons, limited text, driving-optimized apps, and safety lockouts—for example, preventing message typing while moving or restricting scrolling through long lists. These design measures do not make interacting with the system risk-free. Google describes them in its Android Auto accessibility guidance.

Silence message prompts if they pull your attention
Android Auto can show message notifications and supports having messages read aloud or replying by voice. If those prompts are distracting, use Driving mode’s notification filters to block the people or apps you do not want interrupting you. Choose the settings before the drive rather than deciding what to answer on the road. Google explains message features in its Android Auto messaging guide.
