Visualping Chrome Extension vs. Web App: Which Should You Use?

The extension is best for starting from a page or checking it in your browser session; the web app is best for dashboard-based cloud-monitor management. Both can create cloud monitors.

Use the Chrome extension when you want to start monitoring a page from the page itself, or when you need local checks in your browser session. Use the web app when you prefer to create and manage cloud monitors from a central dashboard. Both can create cloud monitors, so the main choice is where you want to set up and manage them—and whether you need local monitoring.

What is the difference between the extension and the web app?

The extension is an in-browser way to create monitors and, optionally, run checks locally. The web app is Visualping’s dashboard for setting up and managing cloud monitors. The extension can create cloud monitors too; it is not limited to local monitoring, and the web app is not a separate monitoring engine.

Option Where checks run Best fit Main limitation
Chrome extension, local mode In your browser on your machine Quick checks, or pages that depend on your signed-in or personalized browser session Chrome must stay open; notifications are browser-based.
Chrome extension, cloud mode Visualping’s servers Starting a monitor while viewing a page, then letting checks continue when your computer is off Check frequency and alert channels depend on your plan.
Web app, cloud monitoring Visualping’s servers Creating and managing monitors from a dashboard You do not need the web app just to create cloud monitors; the extension can do that too.

Choose based on whether checks must continue while you are away

If you need monitoring to continue when Chrome or your computer is shut down, choose cloud monitoring. You can create that cloud monitor in either the extension or the web app. Use the web app if you want to organize and manage monitors from the dashboard; use the extension if you want to begin from the page you are already viewing.

Local monitoring is the extension’s distinct option. It runs using your machine’s browser resources and is useful when the page’s appearance depends on your current browser session. The trade-off is that the browser must remain open, and local alerts are browser-based.

When does the page depend on your browser session?

For pages that show different content to signed-in users, a local monitor uses the browser session that is already signed in. Visualping’s extension update, updated July 28, 2026, also describes recording clicks, scrolling, logins, and navigation, then replaying those steps in later checks. This may help with login screens, popups, or product-option menus. Visualping describes local checks as using the existing browser session, including sessions with two-factor authentication or single sign-on; for cloud checks, recorded login steps are replayed. These are vendor-described capabilities, so confirm that the workflow fits the particular site and account you need to monitor.

How to set up a monitor

  1. Choose your starting point. Open the page in Chrome and use the extension to create a monitor from there, or open Visualping’s web app to work from the dashboard.
  2. Select what to watch. Choose the full page or a specific area of it.
  3. Describe the change that matters. Visualping says it can detect visual, text, and code changes.
  4. Choose local or cloud monitoring where available. Use local mode for checks in your browser session; use cloud mode if checks need to continue when your computer is off.
  5. Set a check frequency and review notifications. Detected changes can be reviewed in the dashboard or through notifications. Visualping says alerts can include added or removed text, a visual comparison, and an AI-generated summary.

Extension-created cloud monitors appear in the dashboard alongside the account’s other monitors, so you can use the extension for setup and the web app for ongoing management.

Check schedules and alerts

Visualping’s extension product page says local checks can run as often as every minute while the browser is open. It lists cloud schedules from every two minutes to monthly, with the fastest intervals depending on plan. Treat these as vendor-published limits rather than a guarantee that every account can use every interval; check current plan details before choosing a schedule.

Local notifications are browser-based. Cloud alert channels and check frequency vary by plan. If an alert must reach you through a particular channel, verify that channel is included in your plan before relying on it.

Which option fits common monitoring jobs?

  • A product page with account-specific options: Try local monitoring if the relevant option only appears in your signed-in browser session. For cloud monitoring, Visualping describes replaying recorded interaction steps, but verify the sequence works for the page.
  • A public policy or government page: Cloud monitoring is a practical fit when checks and alerts need to continue while your browser is closed.
  • A competitor’s prices or messaging: Create a cloud monitor from the dashboard if you want to manage several monitored pages centrally, or use the extension to start from a page you have open.
  • Job listings, research publications, or product availability: Choose based on whether the page requires your browser session and whether checks must continue while your computer is off.
  • Team monitoring: Visualping’s help material describes Business offerings with workspaces, bulk actions, collaboration tools, onboarding, and a 99% uptime guarantee. These are vendor statements; check current plan terms and the guarantee’s scope before relying on them.

What Visualping’s published feature claims mean in practice

Visualping’s basic setup guide, edited September 28, 2026, describes a workflow of adding a webpage, selecting the full page or an area, describing the change to watch for, setting frequency, and reviewing detected changes. Its extension update, updated July 28, 2026, describes one-click cloud monitor creation, with AI analyzing a page and building a monitor. Treat these as descriptions of Visualping’s product, not a promise that every site or login flow will work identically.

Visualping’s plan comparison help article was edited August 13, 2026. Features, schedules, alert options, and plan terms can change, so check the current terms for your account before settling on a plan or workflow.

ScreenshotNeo is a different kind of tool

If the job is to capture a clean image or PDF of a webpage—not to watch it for changes—try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a Visualping replacement for ongoing page-change monitoring. Its API can return a screenshot in one GET request; its consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup is relevant when you need a clean capture.

For developers and AI-agent workflows, ScreenshotNeo may suit one-off or automated captures; use Visualping when you need ongoing change detection and alerts. ScreenshotNeo’s MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
