Visual Intelligence in iOS 27 works in two ways: aim your iPhone camera at something in the real world, or capture what is already on your screen with a screenshot. The actions it offers depend on what it recognizes and, for Apple Intelligence features, whether your iPhone, language and region are supported.
Check that your iPhone can use Visual Intelligence
Apple says Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later. Availability also depends on language and region, and usage limits may apply. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability and requirements if the feature is missing, and make sure Apple Intelligence is enabled in Settings.

Use Visual Intelligence with the camera
- Open Visual Intelligence. On a supported model, click and hold Camera Control. Alternatively, assign Visual Intelligence to the Action button, add its control to the Lock Screen, or open it from Control Center.
- Point the camera at the subject. Hold the iPhone steady and frame the object, text, or business you want to explore.
- Choose an action shown on screen. The available options depend on the subject and context; you may be able to look up a business, identify a plant or animal, use text tools, search for visually similar images, or ask ChatGPT about an object if the ChatGPT extension is enabled.
Look up a business
When Visual Intelligence recognizes a business, it may show details such as opening hours, services, contact information, reviews and ratings. Depending on the business, it may also offer reservation or delivery options. These results are possibilities, not a guarantee that every business will have a complete listing.

Read or act on text
For text in the camera view, available tools can include summarizing, translating and reading it aloud. Recognized phone numbers, email addresses, dates and websites may be actionable. If a poster or flyer advertises a future event, tap Add to Calendar, then Create Event. Review and edit the event details before saving.
Use Visual Intelligence on what’s on your screen
- Display the content you want to analyze. Open the page, image, message or other material on your iPhone.
- Take a screenshot. Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button at the same time.
- Use the tools at the bottom of the screenshot. Choose an option that fits the content. Depending on what appears, you may be able to search for similar images, select a particular object to search for, ask a question, add an event to Calendar, open a related website, summarize text, read it aloud, or learn about a recognized plant or animal.
- Close or save the screenshot. When you are done, close it or save it as you would a screenshot.
If Siri AI beta is enabled, Apple also documents asking Siri about onscreen material and adjusting the screenshot’s selection rectangle to focus on part of it. This is an optional beta capability, not a prerequisite for using the screenshot workflow.

What to check when results vary
- No Visual Intelligence option: Confirm that your iPhone model is eligible, Apple Intelligence is enabled, and your system language and region are supported.
- An expected action is missing: Available tools change with the content Visual Intelligence recognizes. Try framing the subject more clearly or capturing the relevant onscreen material in a screenshot.
- A result seems uncertain: Apple says generative-model outputs may vary. Check important details before relying on them.
- You use visual search: Image searches are subject to the search provider’s terms of use and privacy policies.
App developers can also make app content available in Visual Intelligence search results through Apple’s Visual Intelligence framework and App Intents. As a result, matches and related content can differ across searches and apps; see Apple’s Visual Intelligence developer documentation.
