To run your own VPN on Amazon EC2, launch a Linux instance with a reachable public endpoint, configure its VPC routes and security group, then install and configure VPN software such as WireGuard. The instance is only the server: WireGuard keys, peer routes, and—if you want all client internet traffic to exit through EC2—IP forwarding and source NAT must also be configured. This guide covers a self-managed VPN on an EC2 instance, not AWS’s managed VPN services.
Decide what traffic the VPN should carry
Choose the routing goal before creating client configurations. WireGuard does not decide which destinations a peer can reach or distribute keys and routing policy for you. Ubuntu’s WireGuard introduction explains that the software focuses on its core task, leaving out “key distribution and pushed configurations” (Ubuntu Server: Introduction to WireGuard VPN).

| Goal | Client routing | Server requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Private VPC access | Set the client peer’s AllowedIPs to the VPN subnet and the private VPC destinations it should reach. |
Configure peer addresses and routes so the server can pass traffic to the intended private destinations. Do not route general internet traffic through the tunnel unless that is also required. |
| Full-tunnel internet egress | Route the client’s general internet traffic through the VPN peer, commonly with default routes in AllowedIPs. |
Enable forwarding and source NAT/masquerading for the VPN subnet on the server’s outgoing interface, and allow forwarding in the host firewall. Ubuntu’s default-gateway guidance describes these gateway requirements. |
A full tunnel changes the client’s internet egress path; it is not achieved simply by installing WireGuard. Use the actual interface name and VPN subnet from your instance when applying forwarding and NAT rules.

EC2 instances run in VPC subnets. For a nondefault VPC to provide public internet reachability, attach an internet gateway to the VPC, add a route for internet-bound traffic to the subnet’s route table, give the instance a public IPv4 address or IPv6 address as appropriate, and allow the VPN listener in its security group. AWS’s internet gateway prerequisites and public-subnet guidance explain the pieces. A default VPC may already have an internet gateway and IPv4 route, but verify the subnet, route table, and address assignment rather than assuming they are in place.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Select a Region and VPC. Choose the Region where you intend to run the server and the VPC that will contain it. AWS’s EC2 and VPC documentation describes how instances use VPC subnets, route tables, gateways, and security settings.
- Check the subnet’s internet route. For a nondefault VPC, confirm that the VPC has an attached internet gateway and that the selected subnet’s route table sends internet-bound traffic to it.
- Launch a supported Linux image. Choose an image and instance configuration suitable for your workload. This is a single-instance design; it does not provide multi-instance, multi-Availability-Zone high availability.
- Assign a reachable endpoint. Ensure the instance has a public address compatible with the clients’ network and chosen IP version. If client profiles need a stable endpoint, plan for a stable public address rather than relying on an address that may change when the instance is replaced.
- Restrict inbound access. Add a security-group rule for only the configured VPN listener’s protocol and port. Keep SSH access limited to your known public address range where feasible. AWS’s security-group example recommends allowing only traffic the application needs and scopes its optional SSH rule to the operator’s network.
The VPN listener’s port is a configuration choice, not a universal AWS requirement. The server configuration, client endpoint, and security-group rule must agree on the selected protocol and port.
Install WireGuard and configure peers
Install WireGuard using the package instructions for the Linux distribution you selected. WireGuard uses a private/public key pair for each peer. Its official quick start shows generating a private key, deriving its public key, and configuring an interface with a private key, listen port, peer public key, and allowed IPs.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Create a server key pair and client key pair. Keep each private key secret. Treat any client configuration containing its private key as a credential; share it only through a secure channel.
- Assign tunnel addresses. Choose a VPN address range that does not overlap with the client network or the VPC ranges you need to reach.
- Configure the server interface and peer. Set the server’s private key and listen port, then add each client’s public key and the tunnel addresses or routes that peer may use.
- Configure the client endpoint and routes. Point the client at the instance’s reachable public endpoint and matching listener port. Set
AllowedIPsaccording to the private-access or full-tunnel goal above. - Open the matching listener in the security group and host firewall. Permit only the protocol and port WireGuard is configured to use.
Do not copy a sample port, address range, or interface name without checking that it matches your own configuration. A mismatch between the peer keys, endpoint, port, or allowed IPs can prevent a handshake or leave traffic without a usable route.

For full-tunnel service, the instance must route client packets onward and translate their source addresses as needed for internet return traffic. Ubuntu’s WireGuard default-gateway instructions call for enabling IPv4 forwarding and masquerading the VPN subnet on the outgoing interface.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Enable IPv4 forwarding on the server and make the setting persistent across reboot.
- Add a source-NAT/masquerade rule for the VPN subnet on the actual outgoing network interface.
- Ensure host firewall rules permit forwarding between the WireGuard interface and the outgoing interface.
- Confirm that the client routes the intended traffic into the tunnel; server-side forwarding cannot compensate for an incorrect client route.
These settings depend on the Linux distribution, firewall, interface names, and address ranges in use. Apply the distribution’s documented syntax and verify the active rules rather than treating one command as universal.
Verify connectivity and troubleshoot failures
Test private-resource access and full-tunnel egress separately. A successful handshake proves that peers can communicate at the WireGuard layer; it does not by itself prove that routes, forwarding, DNS, or internet egress work.

- No handshake: verify that both peers use the matching public keys, the client endpoint resolves to the instance’s current public address, and the protocol and port match the security-group and host-firewall rules.
- Handshake works, but no traffic passes: check each peer’s
AllowedIPs, tunnel interface addresses, and system routes. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking interface IPs and routes. - Private VPC destinations fail: confirm that the client routes those destinations into the tunnel and that the server can route traffic to them. Review host forwarding and firewall behavior where traffic must traverse the instance.
- Full-tunnel traffic fails: confirm IPv4 forwarding is enabled, the setting persists after reboot, and masquerading covers the configured VPN subnet on the correct outgoing interface.
- Clients behind NAT lose reachability: a client-side
PersistentKeepalivemay help maintain a mapping through a NAT device or stateful firewall. WireGuard says 25 seconds is a broadly useful interval for this purpose, while noting that most users do not need it (WireGuard quick start).
Account for security, cost, and availability
Security
Expose only the VPN listener clients need, and narrow SSH ingress to a known administrator address range where possible. Keep the operating system updated and protect server and client private keys; anyone who obtains a peer’s private key may be able to impersonate that peer.

AWS states that an internet gateway itself has no charge, but data transfer through an internet gateway can incur charges (AWS internet gateway pricing). The overall bill also depends on the EC2 configuration, Region, running time, and traffic volume. Check current AWS pricing for your Region and expected usage before deployment; there is no single price that applies to every VPN server.

Availability
One EC2 instance in one Availability Zone is a simple personal-server design, but the service depends on that instance and zone. AWS’s VPC guidance identifies multiple Availability Zones as a high-availability consideration for a nondefault VPC. A multi-instance design requires additional routing and operational decisions, as well as additional cost.
