DigitalOcean is a strong fit if you value bundled Droplets and a broader set of adjacent managed cloud products. Hetzner is worth considering when its available Cloud server configuration and location meet your needs at a suitable fully configured price. Compare equivalent resources, IPs, traffic, storage, backups, location and operating effort—not just the lowest advertised monthly price.
There is no established independent, like-for-like benchmark here that makes one provider a universal performance winner. For a demanding application, test the actual workload in the regions you would use.

Both providers offer cloud virtual machines, but the comparison is not simply one price against another. DigitalOcean offers bundled Droplet plans as well as configurable v5 resources, with shared and dedicated options across plan types. Hetzner documents shared-resource Cloud server types alongside dedicated-resource options. A matching vCPU count does not, by itself, establish equivalent performance.
DigitalOcean also presents a broader surrounding cloud ecosystem, including managed databases, Kubernetes, load balancers and object storage. Those services may reduce the infrastructure you need to operate yourself, but they are separate components to assess for your use case. The available Hetzner overview describes Cloud compute and infrastructure features; it does not establish a complete, current inventory of all Hetzner services.
#1 Best Overall
Start with the server class and operational model you actually need. A small development VM, a database-heavy application and a production service with managed dependencies do not have the same cost or administration requirements.
How do their prices and billing compare?
DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page lists bundled plans starting at $4 per month; that is a provider-listed starting price, not a like-for-like estimate for every workload. DigitalOcean also bills by the second with a 60-second minimum. Its configurable v5 resource pricing is not monthly capped, so estimate expected runtime rather than assuming a fixed monthly ceiling. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page and its Droplet pricing documentation, last verified August 25, 2026.
| Cost item | DigitalOcean | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price or resource rates | Bundled Droplets start at $4/month on the provider’s pricing page. The documentation lists v5 rates of $0.0158219 per shared vCPU-hour, $0.028 per general-purpose vCPU-hour, $0.0040411 per GiB of memory-hour and $0.000137 per GiB of boot disk-hour; these are resource rates, not a complete server estimate. | Cloud server pricing depends on the server type. The cited overview does not provide a current comparable server price; check the current order flow for the configuration and region you want. |
| Public IP | Confirm the IP allocation and any applicable charge for the specific configuration in the current pricing flow. | Public IPs are separate according to the cited overview. It lists IPv4 at €0.50/month excluding VAT, but that figure comes from documentation last changed June 28, 2022 and should be verified before ordering. |
| Billing detail | Per-second billing with a 60-second minimum for Droplets; configurable v5 resource pricing is not monthly capped. | Confirm the current billing terms and any applicable charges in the order flow; the cited overview does not establish a directly comparable billing figure. |

Rank #2
Before deciding, price the configuration you would actually deploy. Include the required CPU and memory class, boot disk, extra storage, outbound transfer, backups, IPs and taxes. Compare the same region and expected runtime. A low base price can be a poor guide if it excludes an IP or other resources you need; conversely, a bundled plan may include resources that would otherwise need separate pricing.
Which provider is easier to operate?
A cloud VM is not automatically managed hosting. DigitalOcean says its core Droplet offering is unmanaged: customers are responsible for managing the server. That means planning for tasks such as operating-system updates, application deployment, access control, monitoring, backups and recovery. Read DigitalOcean’s Droplets product information and its Droplet Features documentation, last verified September 3, 2026.
DigitalOcean’s adjacent managed products may be useful if you would otherwise operate databases, Kubernetes infrastructure, load balancing or object storage yourself. Assess the cost and support boundaries of each product separately; a wider catalog does not mean your particular application is fully managed. For Hetzner, verify which services and management responsibilities apply to the specific product you plan to use rather than inferring them from a Cloud server listing.

- Choose a VM-first approach if you have the skills and time to manage the server and want control over its software stack.
- Consider managed components when reducing routine infrastructure work is worth the additional product cost and the service matches your application’s requirements.
- Budget for operations on either provider: backups, patching, access security and recovery remain part of the deployment plan unless a service explicitly covers them.
How should you compare availability promises?
An SLA is a contractual remedy with a defined scope, not a benchmark of real-world speed or a guarantee that every component of an application will be available. Compare the terms for the exact product you intend to use, including exclusions, measurement, notification steps and the process for requesting compensation.
Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure 99.9% monthly availability for Cloud Servers, measured for each individual Cloud Server in a calendar month. The agreement makes the remedy a prorated Cloud Credit requested by the customer and subject to conditions. Read the Hetzner Cloud and vServer Service Agreement for the applicable terms.
DigitalOcean publishes product-specific service-level agreements. Its SLA index is not enough to establish the terms for every service; consult the applicable DigitalOcean product SLA, including the CPU Droplet agreement if that is your product. Do not treat an SLA for one product as coverage for the entire application stack.

Which locations are available for your users?
Choose a region based on where your users and dependent services are, then measure latency from those locations. Provider-wide counts do not tell you which region is available for a particular server type or product.
Hetzner’s Cloud overview identifies facilities in the USA, Singapore and Europe. DigitalOcean’s August 2025 comparison article reported 15+ data centers/regions, but that is dated provider-published context, not a verified October 2026 region count. Check each provider’s current region selector and confirm the required configuration is available before committing. See Hetzner’s Cloud server overview and DigitalOcean’s 2025 comparison article.
How to make a fair comparison
- Define the workload. Record the application’s CPU, memory, storage and network needs, whether the workload is continuous or intermittent, and any recovery or availability requirements.
- Select comparable server classes. Match shared resources against shared resources, or dedicated against dedicated where available. Do not assume two providers’ vCPU labels guarantee equivalent performance.
- Build the full monthly estimate. Add the server, disk, IP, outbound traffic, backups and taxes you expect to use. Use current pricing and order flows, especially for prices or fees whose documentation may be dated.
- Check region fit. Confirm the intended server type is offered in the region nearest your users or critical dependencies, then test latency and application behavior from representative locations.
- Account for administration. Decide who will patch, secure, monitor, back up and restore the VM. Add the cost of managed components only where they genuinely reduce work you would otherwise perform.
- Run a workload-specific trial if performance matters. Test the same application, data shape and region on the configurations under consideration. No independent matched DigitalOcean-versus-Hetzner benchmark establishes a general speed winner.
Which should you choose?
Choose DigitalOcean when its broader ecosystem fits
DigitalOcean is a reasonable choice when you want bundled Droplets and may benefit from its surrounding managed cloud products. Verify the configuration’s current total cost, the exact service-level terms and the operational work that remains yours.

Evaluate Hetzner when its configuration and location fit
Hetzner is worth evaluating when a suitable Cloud server type and location meet your needs and its current fully configured price is attractive. Confirm current IP charges, taxes, traffic and other add-ons rather than relying on an older overview’s figures.

For either provider, the right answer depends on equivalent resources, total cost, geographic fit and your team’s willingness to run the server. If those factors are close, a trial using your own application is more useful than an unsupported claim that one provider is categorically faster or cheaper.
