Visible-Light Catalysts and PFAS: What the Lab Results Show

Laboratory studies show that light-activated catalysts can break down selected PFAS, but differing compounds, endpoints and water conditions prevent broad claims of cleanup.

Visible-light catalysts have broken down or removed selected PFAS in laboratory studies, but they are not a proven way to clean up every “forever chemical” or treat drinking water at home. One 2024 nanocrystal study reported complete defluorination of PFOS under 405-nanometre LED light in eight hours. Other experiments, using different PFAS, catalysts, light and water, reported markedly different outcomes. The results are promising research, not evidence of a ready-to-use cleanup system.

What does it mean to “clean up” a PFAS?

PFAS is a broad family of chemicals, not one substance. Their carbon–fluorine bonds help make many of them unusually persistent. A result for one PFAS therefore cannot be assumed to apply to another, and a treatment that works in one water sample may perform differently in another.

Studies also measure different endpoints:

  • Removal means the measured amount of a target compound in the treated sample has fallen. That alone does not show where it went.
  • Degradation means the original, or parent, compound has been chemically changed. It does not necessarily mean the fluorine has been released or that the products are harmless.
  • Defluorination measures the release of fluorine from carbon–fluorine bonds. It is a more direct measure of bond breakdown, but does not by itself establish that every product in the treated water is safe.

That distinction matters because PFAS treatment can leave shorter-chain PFAS or other intermediates. A lower reading for the starting compound is not, on its own, proof of complete detoxification.

What have light-activated catalyst studies found?

The results below concern different compounds, treatment systems and endpoints. Their percentages and treatment times should not be ranked as if they came from a head-to-head test.

Study and treatment PFAS tested Reported result What the result does—and does not—show
Arima and colleagues, 2024: semiconductor nanocrystals under 405-nm LED irradiation in aqueous solution PFOS Complete defluorination in 8 hours This is a reported defluorination result for PFOS under the study’s experimental conditions, not a general treatment time for PFAS or real-world water.
Arima and colleagues, 2024: semiconductor nanocrystals under light irradiation Nafion, a fluorinated polymer 81% defluorination after 24 hours The reported endpoint is defluorination of this polymer, not a removal rate for all PFAS.
Boron-nitride/titanium-dioxide composite using outdoor sunlight, summarized by the U.S. National Science Foundation in 2022 PFOA About 99% degradation in deionized water in under 3 hours; salty water took about 9 hours This system relied on UV-A. It is evidence for solar/UV-A photocatalysis, not the visible-light nanocrystal result. The reported degradation is not interchangeable with complete defluorination.
Photocatalytic ozonation using WO3/TiO2 under UVA-visible light; Lashuk and colleagues, 2022 Five PFAS 16% total PFAS removal after 4 hours, ranging from 4% to 26% This result shows that performance can be modest under tested conditions; it is a removal figure, not proof of full defluorination.

The summaries of these studies do not state all the variables needed for a direct comparison, including the concentration, catalyst dose and light intensity for each experiment. Water chemistry also matters: in the NSF-described PFOA experiment, the reported treatment time differed between deionized and salty water.

Why is the nanocrystal result notable—and still preliminary?

Arima and colleagues describe the nanocrystal process as involving cooperative multiphoton mechanisms, including light-induced displacement of surface ligands and Auger-related electron injection. Their experiments were conducted in aqueous solution at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The paper also reports a turnover number of 17,200 carbon–fluorine bond dissociations per nanocrystal.

Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher – Lead, Chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics Filter, 10 Cup, 120 Gallon Filter Life - Filter Media Made in USA
  • Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
  • Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
  • Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.

These findings help explain why the work is scientifically interesting: the catalyst can drive repeated bond-breaking events in the reported experimental setup. They do not establish how the system would perform at larger scale, with variable wastewater, or in a continuous treatment plant. The study did not demonstrate field-scale operation.

Why do light and water conditions change the outcome?

“Light-powered” does not mean that any light source will work. The nanocrystal experiment used 405-nm LED irradiation, while the separate PFOA study relied on UV-A in sunlight. A different 2022 study used UVA-visible light alongside ozonation. These are distinct treatment conditions, not interchangeable examples of visible-light performance.

A 2024 critical review of PFOA photocatalysis identifies wavelength, catalyst dose, concentration and water matrix as factors that can change reported performance. A 2025 review describes broader challenges for photocatalysis research, including weak visible-light activity in some materials, loss of energy through charge-carrier recombination, inefficient use of charge carriers and the need for field-scale validation. Those are research-wide issues, not a measured verdict on every catalyst.

Are visible-light catalysts ready for household or municipal use?

The cited studies establish laboratory research results, not a validated household product or municipal treatment system. The available evidence does not establish whether these experimental systems are commercially available as field-scale PFAS treatment. A generic lamp, catalyst powder or household filter should not be assumed to destroy PFAS based on these experiments.

For a treatment claim to support real-world use, testing would need to identify which PFAS were treated, under what light and water conditions, and whether the process reduced parent compounds, released fluorine and addressed persistent byproducts. The reviewed results do not establish that full set of outcomes for a deployed system.
