Ionocaloric cooling could eventually reduce the need for conventional refrigerants, but it has not yet ended greenhouse gas use or reached the market as a refrigerator. A 2022 Science study demonstrated a small experimental cooling cycle using voltage-driven ion movement; it did not establish commercial performance or the technology’s full life-cycle climate impact.
How ionocaloric cooling works
Most refrigerators use vapor compression: a refrigerant evaporates and condenses as it circulates through different pressures, absorbing heat in one part of the system and releasing it elsewhere. Ionocaloric cooling takes a different approach. It changes the ionic environment around a material to induce a phase change, which produces a thermal response.

A useful analogy is salt lowering water’s melting point. In the ionocaloric cycle, adding or removing ions can shift a material’s phase transition. Melting absorbs heat; solidifying releases it. Voltage-driven ion movement controls the process. Berkeley Lab’s prototype description identifies sodium iodide and ethylene carbonate, with electrodialysis used to separate the components.
What the 2022 experiment demonstrated
Drew Lilley and Ravi Prasher’s 2022 paper in Science describes theoretical work and an experimental ionocaloric Stirling refrigeration cycle. In that experimental system, the authors reported a temperature lift of up to 25°C and a coefficient of performance equal to 30% of the Carnot limit, using a voltage strength of about 0.22 volts. These are results from the study’s setup, not specifications for a household appliance or proof of field performance. Read the paper in Science or see its PubMed record.

A coefficient of performance (COP) compares heat moved with energy input; the Carnot limit is a theoretical maximum for a cycle operating between specified temperatures. Reporting performance as a fraction of that limit helps contextualize a laboratory result, but it does not by itself show how a complete refrigerator would compare with a commercial vapor-compression system. That would require measurements of the whole system, including its components and practical operating conditions.
Why it is not yet an established replacement
The experiment is a research demonstration, not evidence that a complete ionocaloric refrigerator is commercially available, more efficient in everyday use, or ready to replace existing equipment. The reported results do not establish practical cooling capacity, durable operation, consumer cost, or performance at commercial scale. Nor do they provide a full life-cycle assessment of materials, electricity use, and emissions.

Could it eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from refrigeration?
The phrase “end greenhouse gas use” describes a possible future advantage: a condensed-phase cycle could avoid conventional vapor refrigerants. It does not mean refrigeration would have zero climate impact. A system still uses electricity, and its materials, manufacturing, maintenance, and disposal can also affect its life-cycle emissions. Whether ionocaloric equipment reduces total climate impact would depend on how a practical system performs and how it is made and powered.
Nor is ionocaloric cooling the only route away from high-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The European Commission lists non-fluorinated options already used in different refrigeration applications, including carbon dioxide (R-744), propane (R-290), and isobutane (R-600a); ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration and food processing. These refrigerants are not interchangeable: suitability depends on the application, system design, safety, flammability, efficiency, and climate impact. The European Commission’s overview of alternatives outlines established options.

For context on policy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in 2021 that its rule under the AIM Act would phase down U.S. production and consumption of HFCs by 85% over 15 years. That is a policy target, not evidence that ionocaloric cooling has displaced HFC equipment. EPA’s announcement describes the rule at the time.
What to look for in future evaluations
A useful comparison with existing refrigeration needs system-level evidence, not just a promising cycle result. Key measures include:
- Efficiency and energy use for a complete system under practical operating conditions.
- Cooling capacity and achievable temperature lift for the intended application.
- Voltage and total energy input across the cycle.
- Durability and safety of materials and components.
- Manufacturing and operating costs, plus life-cycle climate impacts.
The 2022 study establishes an experimental basis for further development. It does not yet provide an apples-to-apples commercial comparison across these measures.
