In 2026, the term covers several different tools: camera-based augmented reality (AR), AI-generated appearance previews, makeup simulations, and room-scale product visualizations. Each answers a different shopping question.
What virtual try-on actually does
Virtual try-on is a way to preview a product digitally before buying it. The preview may put a digital object over a live camera view, generate an image of a product on a person, simulate a makeup look, or place furniture in a room scene. These experiences reduce uncertainty about appearance or visual context; they are not all digital fitting rooms.

Camera-based AR overlays
Augmented reality places a digital object into a live camera view or a view of the shopper’s surroundings. For home products, this can help shoppers judge how an item might look and roughly relate to the room around it. Shopify describes this kind of place-in-room visualization for ecommerce product pages: Shopify’s guide to AR in ecommerce.

Some tools use a photo or product imagery to generate a preview of how clothing might appear on a person. A generated image can help with style and visual comparison, but it is not evidence that a garment will fit a particular body or behave like the real fabric. Shopify’s overview of virtual shopping discusses AI try-on alongside other forms of online visualization: Shopify’s virtual-shopping guide.

Category-specific simulations
Makeup previews show possible shades or looks, while eyewear previews show frames on a face. These may help narrow visual choices, but neither establishes every relevant purchase fact: makeup appearance can depend on the actual product and conditions, and a frame image does not replace prescription or optical measurements.
How the experience varies by product
| Shopping category | What the preview shows | What to verify separately |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | A garment’s possible appearance on a model or in a shopper-uploaded photo | Size charts, garment measurements, fabric and fit details, and the return policy |
| Makeup | A simulated makeup shade or look, sometimes assembled from multiple products | Product details and current availability; a preview is not a guarantee of the exact result in person |
| Eyewear | How frames may look on a face, sometimes using 3D frame data and facial scanning | Prescription requirements and optical measurements, including pupillary distance where relevant |
| Home goods and furniture | How an item may look in a room or surrounding environment | Product dimensions and the available space; a visual placement is not a substitute for checking measurements |

Google’s apparel and beauty experiences
In an announcement dated March 5, 2025, Google described apparel try-on across a range of real models from XXS to XXL and a feature for US shoppers to upload a photo for apparel visualization. The company also described “vision match,” which turns a text description into visual ideas and shoppable products. The same announcement said a US mobile experience for trying on and shopping makeup looks assembled from multiple products was beginning its rollout that month. Those are dated product descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature, catalog item, or rollout remains available to every shopper in 2026. See Google’s March 2025 announcement.

Google also cited a US online consumer survey it commissioned from Ipsos: 2,003 adults aged 18 and older were surveyed from February 3–7, 2025. Any survey statement tied to that announcement should be understood in that sample and time frame, rather than treated as a universal measure of shopper behavior.

Walmart’s January 30, 2024 announcement described an optical try-on feature using 3D frame data and algorithms. Its launch description included facial scanning, prescription upload, pupillary-distance capture, online ordering, and more than 750 eyewear options. That number described the launch selection, not the current catalog. A preview may help compare frame appearance, but shoppers still need to confirm the prescription and measurements required for their order. Walmart’s description is at Walmart Corporate.

Room visualization for home products
Place-in-room AR is adjacent to body-based try-on: it helps someone picture a product in their own environment rather than on their body. Shopify’s ecommerce guide describes this use of AR for product pages. The practical value is visual context; shoppers should still compare stated product dimensions with the actual room and intended placement.
How common is virtual try-on?
Two 2026 figures offer different, limited views of adoption:

- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹

- Ryder reported that 31% of surveyed US online shoppers used virtual try-on or visualization tools. Its consumer survey covered 1,160 US online shoppers and was conducted in March 2026. The figure is one category among AI-assisted shopping tools in that survey, not a global estimate. Details are in Ryder’s 2026 consumer study.
- Genlook reported that 90% of try-ons in its dataset happened on phones. The company analyzed first-party data from 577 Shopify stores using its service from April 16 through June 30, 2026. That describes participating stores on one provider’s platform, not all ecommerce try-ons. See Genlook’s Q2 2026 report.
The figures measure different things: Ryder surveyed shoppers about tool use, while Genlook analyzed activity in stores using its own service. They should not be combined into a single trend line or treated as a universal benchmark.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does try-on increase add-to-cart rates?
Genlook reported a 29.2% add-to-cart rate in sessions with a try-on, compared with 9.4% in sessions without one, in its April 16–June 30, 2026 dataset. This was an observational session-level comparison, not a controlled experiment. Try-on users may already be more engaged or more likely to shop, so the figures do not establish that the tool caused the difference. They also do not show that every retailer will see higher conversion or fewer returns.

Shopify’s AR guide includes brand case studies with add-to-cart and return figures. Those are outcomes reported for the named cases through a commerce platform’s marketing guide, and should be read as case-specific examples rather than a typical result for all AR implementations.
How to judge a try-on preview before relying on it
- Identify what is being simulated. A live AR overlay, a generated clothing image, a makeup simulation, and a frame preview provide different kinds of information.
- Check the input. A live camera view, an uploaded photo, product or model imagery, and room placement are not interchangeable. Notice which one the retailer’s tool uses.
- Separate appearance from measurement. Use the preview to assess visual style or context. For clothing, check the size chart and garment measurements; for eyewear, confirm prescription and optical requirements; for home products, measure the space.
- Confirm availability and scope. Features can vary by retailer, location, device, catalog, and rollout date. An announcement from 2024 or 2025 does not confirm current availability, so check the live product page.
- Review photo handling. If a tool asks for a face or body photo, read that retailer’s current privacy policy to understand how the image is handled. The examples covered here do not provide a complete privacy comparison across providers.
- Account for mobile friction. Many previews are designed for phones, but image upload and generation can add steps. Genlook’s phone-use figure applies to its own Q2 2026 dataset, not to the entire category.
What virtual try-on means for shoppers in 2026
Try-on tools are now described across clothing, beauty, eyewear, and home-product shopping, but the label alone says little about what a particular tool can prove. The useful question is whether the preview addresses your uncertainty: visual style, appearance on a face or body, or placement in a room. For fit, prescriptions, dimensions, and purchase terms, rely on the retailer’s measurements and policies rather than an image alone.
