Gemini can search a connected Google Photos library, but that is not the same feature as Gemini’s photo tools inside Google Photos—and Google describes their data handling separately. You can disconnect the connection, or export your archive and run a library on hardware you manage. Whether that move saves money depends on your cloud plan, equipment, backup costs, and time; the available evidence does not establish a typical household saving or the author’s actual bill.
What does it mean that Gemini can search Google Photos?
Google documents a connection between Google Photos and Gemini Apps. When eligible, you can ask Gemini to find photos, videos, or albums and answer questions about information in your library. Google’s examples include “Find my photos from my most recent trip,” “Show me recent selfies,” and “what’s my driver’s license number?” Search results and answers should not be treated as guaranteed complete or correct.

This connection has eligibility requirements: a personal Google Account, Keep Activity enabled, an account holder aged 18 or older, supported geography, and particular Google Photos settings. Availability may differ by region and account type. See Google’s instructions for searching Google Photos in Gemini Apps for current requirements and connection settings.

Google separately publishes a notice for Gemini features within Google Photos, such as Ask Photos. In that Photos-specific notice, updated February 18, 2026, Google says: “Your personal data in Google Photos is never used for ads.” Google also says: “We don’t train any generative AI models outside of Google Photos with your personal data in Google Photos.” The same notice says Photos features can process photos and videos and make inferences. These statements concern Gemini features in Photos, not every way a photo might be handled elsewhere. Read Google’s Photos privacy hub.

Separately, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says that when someone shares a photo or video from a connected media gallery with Gemini Apps using screen actions or the upload feature, and Keep Activity is on, that content “is used to improve Google services with the help of human reviewers.” This disclosure concerns content shared with Gemini Apps; it should not be collapsed into the Photos-specific notice.
How do I disconnect Google Photos from Gemini?
If you want to stop the Gemini Apps connection without migrating your archive, use the Connected Apps settings described in Google’s connection help and disconnect Google Photos there. This is a narrower change than deleting your Google Photos library or changing how other Photos-native features work. Review the current settings and feature descriptions in your account before deciding which controls you want to change.

How do I move Google Photos to a NAS or self-hosted library?
Start with an account export, then import and verify it before removing the cloud copy. Google identifies Takeout as the account-data download route in its Google data download instructions. A downloaded file’s filesystem timestamp may reflect when it was downloaded, not when the photo was taken, so preserve metadata and check dates after import.
- Export the archive. Use Google Takeout and select the Google Photos data you want. Keep the downloaded archive intact while you work; it is your source copy during migration.
- Choose the destination and import path. For Synology Photos, follow Synology’s Google Photos migration guide. For Immich, the quick-start documentation describes a self-hosted application and points to Google Takeout for bringing in the rest of a Google Photos archive. These are different systems; choose one whose setup and maintenance you are prepared to manage.
- Reconcile metadata where needed. Synology warns that libraries using Storage saver or containing photo information edited in Google Photos may need a helper to write metadata back into files. Export files and metadata sidecars may therefore need reconciliation.
- Verify before deleting anything. Check sample capture dates, albums, and counts against the cloud library. Pay particular attention to dates that could have been replaced by download timestamps and to edited or Storage saver items. These are prudent checks, not a guarantee that any import tool preserves every detail.
- Make and test a second backup. An imported library on one NAS or server is still one copy. Immich’s backup and restore guidance recommends a 3-2-1 strategy and includes both media and database data in a comprehensive backup. Make sure you can restore both.
What a NAS changes
A Synology NAS running Synology Photos puts the library on hardware you manage. Synology documents automatic background backup from a device and describes Synology Photos as free without premium tiers on its Synology Photos page. That describes the software, not the total cost of owning a photo system: hardware, drives, electricity, a separate off-site copy, replacements, and maintenance still matter.
Immich is another self-hosted route, but it requires operating server software. In either case, control over where the files are stored comes with responsibility for access security, updates, backups, and recovery. The cited documentation establishes available controls and backup expectations; it does not quantify a privacy-risk reduction compared with a cloud account.
Does moving photos save money?
It can for a particular household, but there is no supported basis here for saying that a NAS or self-hosted service is cheaper for a typical household. Nor is there a documented bill or calculation that supports claiming a specific amount saved in this case. Treat “saved money” as a personal result only when it is backed by that person’s own dated accounting—not as a general promise.

- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
For your own comparison, use the same time horizon and include:
- Google storage-plan fees you would otherwise pay.
- The NAS or server and its drives, including replacement drives.
- Electricity and any off-site backup destination.
- Your time for setup, updates, troubleshooting, and restore testing.
Synology’s no-premium-tier software statement does not settle that calculation. A low recurring software charge can coexist with substantial hardware and upkeep costs, while a device you already own may change the arithmetic. Record actual costs and your chosen period rather than projecting one household’s result onto everyone.

Which option fits your priorities?
| Option | Where the library lives | Setup and upkeep | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Google Photos and disconnect Gemini Apps | In your Google Photos account | Use the Connected Apps control; no self-hosted server is required | Stops this documented Gemini Apps connection, but does not move the archive or address Photos-native Gemini features. |
| Synology Photos | On Synology hardware you manage | Requires NAS setup and ongoing responsibility for hardware and backups | Synology documents Takeout migration and automatic device backup; metadata restoration may be needed for some exports. |
| Immich | On a server you operate | Requires running and maintaining self-hosted application software | Its documentation covers Takeout as an import route and recommends backing up both media and database data. |
The table describes documented characteristics, not a measured head-to-head comparison of privacy, reliability, or total cost. If your main concern is only the Gemini connection, disconnecting it is the smaller change. If your priority is where the archive is stored, migration can provide more direct control—but only with a backup and restore plan.
