To get alerts on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications, tap an app, turn on Allow Notifications, then choose where its alerts appear. If notifications are already enabled but arrive silently or late, check the app’s alert options, Focus, Scheduled Summary, and sound settings.
Turn on alerts for an iPhone app
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Under Notification Style, tap the app you want to configure.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose whether alerts appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners. Enable the locations you want.
- If the app offers them, set its sound, badges, preview visibility, and notification types. Some apps also link to additional notification controls inside the app.
The available controls vary by app. Apple’s notification settings guide explains the options and notes that some apps have their own notification settings.

Choose when alerts arrive
Deliver selected alerts in a Scheduled Summary
To collect notifications from selected apps and receive them at chosen times, open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary. Turn on Scheduled Summary, set the delivery times, and select the apps to include. If an app does not appear in the list, first enable Allow Notifications for it.

Focus can silence or filter notifications while it is active. Open Settings > Focus, choose the Focus in use, and check which apps are allowed or silenced. Depending on the Focus and app, you may also be able to allow time-sensitive notifications. Apple’s Focus notification guidance covers these controls.

Set preview privacy and Lock Screen layout
To control whether notification text is visible, go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews when that option is available. Choose Always, When Unlocked, or Never. When Unlocked limits preview details until the iPhone is unlocked; Never hides the preview text.
You can also choose how notifications are arranged on the Lock Screen. Apple lists Count, Stack, and List layouts. The options shown can vary by app and software version. See Apple’s guide to changing notification settings for the relevant controls.

Find or act on notifications you missed
- On the Lock Screen, swipe up from the middle of the screen to open Notification Center.
- When using another screen, swipe down from the top center of the display.
- Tap a notification to open its app, or touch and hold it to see available quick actions.

Check the app’s notification settings
In Settings > Notifications, select the app and confirm Allow Notifications is on. Check that at least one alert location is selected and review any app-specific sound or notification-type controls.

Check Focus and Scheduled Summary
If alerts are delayed or appear only at certain times, see whether the app is included in a Scheduled Summary or restricted by an active Focus. Adjust the summary schedule or the Focus’s allowed and silenced apps to match when you need alerts.
Check silent mode and volume for sound problems
Notification banners can appear without an audible alert. Check whether the iPhone is silenced and raise the volume if it is turned down. Apple Support says, “If your phone is silenced or the volume is turned down completely, notification sounds will not play.” See Apple’s notification sound guidance.
Set special alerts for Messages and contacts
Messages has its own sound and vibration controls. To let a particular contact’s sounds and vibrations come through even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced, configure Emergency Bypass in that contact’s Ringtone or Text Tone settings. Focus also has a separate option for allowing calls from emergency contacts while notifications are silenced. Apple explains these options in its Messages notification guide and Focus guide.

Check government alerts for your region
Open Settings > Notifications and scroll to Government Alerts if that section is available. The controls and alert categories depend on your country or region, carrier, and iPhone model. Apple’s guide lists National Alerts, AMBER, Public Safety, and Emergency Alerts for the United States; those categories should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. In supported contexts, an Always Play Sound option may be available for Emergency Alerts. Government alert settings do not guarantee a notification in every circumstance, so do not rely on an iPhone as your only way to receive urgent warnings. Get alerts on an Apple Watch
If you use a paired Apple Watch and want notifications on your wrist, review its notification settings. Apple describes mirroring iPhone notification settings for apps on both devices in its iPhone and Apple Watch notification guide. The Watch is optional; iPhone alerts can be configured without it.
