VideoChat3 vs. RoboTTT: Different AI Projects for Video and Robot Policies

VideoChat3 and RoboTTT solve different problems: one understands video, the other expands the context available to robot policies. Their papers do not establish a shared system or a direct comparison of separate backbones.

VideoChat3 and RoboTTT are separate research projects, not two parts of a demonstrated combined system. VideoChat3 is a video-understanding model; RoboTTT is a method for giving robot policies longer visuomotor context through test-time training. Their papers describe different tasks and approaches, and do not establish a shared system or substantiate a claim that the two use “separate transformer backbones.”

How the projects differ

Project Purpose Core approach described Reported evaluation
VideoChat3 Video understanding and video-centric multimodal interaction Inflated 3D Vision Transformer (I3D-ViT) and Adaptive Frame Resolution for streaming video perception Video benchmarks; the authors report results against open-source models of equal or larger parameter counts
RoboTTT Scaling the context available to robot policies Test-time training with a recurrent fast-weight state updated by gradient descent Real-robot manipulation experiments and comparisons with specified context baselines

The projects address different input-output problems: VideoChat3 processes video for understanding, while RoboTTT conditions a robot policy on visuomotor history to produce actions. A meaningful comparison is therefore about their distinct designs and experimental goals, not a head-to-head contest.

What VideoChat3 does

The paper “VideoChat3: Fully Open Video MLLM for Efficient and Generalist Video Understanding” describes a video-centric multimodal language model. Its I3D-ViT and Adaptive Frame Resolution are intended to support perception of streaming video. The paper also describes a data-synthesis pipeline and three named datasets: Academic2M, LV116K, and OL617K. These are dataset labels; the names alone should not be read as verified dataset-size figures.

The authors report a 4B-parameter model and say it outperforms prior open-source models with equal or larger parameter counts on the benchmarks they evaluated. That is a result reported by the paper under its evaluation setup, not independent verification or a guarantee for other tasks.

Released materials

The VideoChat3 repository describes releases of weights, training code, evaluation code, and training data. Its update history lists weights and data on July 17, 2026; evaluation code on July 24; training code and full-stage training data and checkpoints on July 27; and an arXiv-paper/evaluation-code update on August 25. Availability and artifact terms can change, so consult the repository and the terms for each artifact before using or reproducing the work.

How RoboTTT uses test-time training

“RoboTTT: Context Scaling for Robot Policies” introduces Test-Time-Training Robot Policies, applying test-time training to robot foundation models, including vision-language-action policies. A recurrent state of fast weights is updated by gradient descent during training and inference. In the paper’s description, this lets the policy compress past context into weight space and retrieve it for long-context conditioning. The training recipe includes sequence action forcing and truncated backpropagation through time.

NVIDIA’s GEAR Lab project page describes an implementation that integrates TTT layers into a VLA policy and identifies GR00T N1.7 as its instantiation. This describes that implementation; it does not establish that every RoboTTT configuration uses GR00T N1.7.

What RoboTTT’s reported results mean

The RoboTTT authors report scaling visuomotor context to 8K timesteps without increasing inference latency in their experiments. They also report the following outcomes:

  • An 87% overall improvement over their single-step-context baseline on challenging real-robot manipulation tasks.
  • A five-minute, ten-stage assembly task completed by RoboTTT but not by the baselines in the reported experiment.
  • A 62% improvement for the 8K-timestep model over the same model pretrained with 1K timesteps.

These figures describe the paper’s experiments and comparison conditions. They are not universal performance guarantees for other robot tasks, policies, or deployments.

Are these projects based on separate transformer backbones?

The papers support a more limited conclusion: VideoChat3 and RoboTTT are distinct projects with different target tasks and different methods described in their publications. VideoChat3 specifies I3D-ViT as part of its video-understanding design. RoboTTT describes test-time training and fast-weight context for robot policies, and NVIDIA’s project page names a GR00T N1.7 implementation.

Those descriptions do not establish a direct architectural comparison of “separate transformer backbones,” nor do they show that the projects are components of one system. The title’s backbone claim should not be treated as a finding of either paper.
