Gemma 4 on a NAS: What Changes When It’s Always Available

Gemma 4 on a NAS depends on the model, quantization, memory headroom, context, runtime, and network setup. Here’s what to verify before treating a NAS as the inference host.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemma 4 can run on some small computers, but that does not establish that it will run on every NAS. The model variant, quantization, memory left after the NAS’s other work, context length, and runtime support all matter. If the NAS is the inference host, the main practical change is that the model can be available from that host rather than tied to a laptop session—but network access and performance depend on the specific setup.

First, confirm the NAS is doing inference

A NAS can store model files without running the model. To say Gemma 4 is running on the NAS, inference must happen there: the NAS needs a compatible runtime and enough suitable resources for the selected model and workload. If another computer performs inference, the NAS is storage, not the model host.

Google documents Ollama and llama.cpp as ways to run quantized Gemma locally, including on a laptop or other small computing device without a GPU. That is general guidance, not certification for a NAS appliance or its operating system. The exact NAS model, operating-system version, processor architecture, available memory, and accelerator support need to be checked before treating it as compatible.

Choose a model with memory headroom, not just a promising spec

Google’s Gemma 4 overview lists five model sizes and approximate Q4_0 GPU or TPU inference-memory estimates. These estimates include 20% overhead for loading additional things, but exclude software and memory that grows with the context window. They are not total-system RAM guarantees; actual needs vary by inference tool and environment.

Gemma 4 variant Approximate Q4_0 GPU or TPU memory estimate What to keep in mind
E2B 2.9 GB Estimate includes 20% loading overhead; excludes software and context-window memory.
E4B 4.5 GB Estimate includes 20% loading overhead; excludes software and context-window memory.
12B 6.7 GB Estimate includes 20% loading overhead; excludes software and context-window memory.
26B A4B 14.4 GB Estimate includes 20% loading overhead; excludes software and context-window memory. All 26 billion parameters must be loaded for fast routing and inference, despite 4 billion being active per token.
31B 17.5 GB Estimate includes 20% loading overhead; excludes software and context-window memory.

These are Google’s approximate Q4_0 inference-memory figures, not measurements from a particular NAS or predictions of its speed. Leave room for the NAS operating system, other services, the runtime, and the context. Longer prompts and generated responses add memory use. A model that loads successfully may still leave too little headroom for the rest of the NAS or for the context your tasks require.

Quantization is a trade-off

Quantization lowers the precision used to represent a model, which can reduce resource demands. Google cautions that lower precision generally reduces capability, although it may still be sufficient for a given task. Treat Q4_0 as one possible operating point—not a guarantee of identical output quality or speed across devices.

Do not size the 26B A4B model by its active parameters alone

The 26B A4B model is a mixture of experts. Its 4-billion-parameter active count describes what is activated per token, not how much of the model must be loaded. Google says all 26 billion parameters must be in memory for fast routing and inference, so the active count is not a safe substitute for the model’s memory estimate.

Match the model to the work you want it to do

All five sizes support image input, according to Google. Native audio is listed for E2B, E4B, and 12B. Google gives small models a 128K context window and medium models a 256K context window. Context capacity and available memory are related concerns: longer inputs and outputs increase memory use beyond the static model weights.

  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Before settling on a variant, identify the task rather than choosing the largest model that might fit. Consider whether you need image input, native audio, or a long context, then account for the NAS’s remaining resources and the runtime’s support for that model. Google’s Ollama guide lists tags for E2B, E4B, 26B A4B, and 31B; the model overview lists 12B in the family, but that does not establish that every runtime offers every size.

What an always-available host changes—and what it does not

If inference runs on the NAS, its service can be available without keeping a laptop open. Ollama provides a local web-service interface as well as command-line use; Google’s guide demonstrates a request to http://localhost:11434/api/generate and describes the service as useful for experimental and low-volume applications. This is a local endpoint example, not proof that other devices on a home network can reach it.

To use the service from another device, the NAS and runtime need an appropriate network configuration. Binding, firewall rules, authentication, and the NAS’s application environment are device-specific. Do not assume that a service listening on localhost is exposed to the LAN, or that network exposure is secure by default. Configure access deliberately and consult the documentation for the runtime and NAS platform in use.

An always-on arrangement also does not, by itself, establish faster responses, lower power use, greater reliability, or better privacy than running the model on a laptop. Those comparisons depend on the actual hardware, workload, configuration, and measurements. Google’s local-runtime guidance supports running Gemma on small computers; it does not make those device-specific outcomes universal.

Check the runtime and NAS platform before installing

Ollama and llama.cpp support quantized Gemma versions, with GGUF used by these frameworks for quantized models. Docker’s official Ollama example demonstrates a container setup under stated conditions, including Linux with native Docker Engine and a CUDA-supported GPU for its documented GPU route. Docker’s guide says GPU access to containers is supported only on Linux and Windows 11 in that guide, and warns that performance and GPU support vary by platform.

That Docker example is not NAS compatibility documentation. NAS products differ in operating system, processor architecture, container support, memory, and accelerator access. Verify the exact device and software versions rather than inferring compatibility from the fact that a runtime works on a laptop or in a general Docker example.

A practical way to evaluate a NAS setup

  1. Identify the inference host. Establish whether the NAS will run the model or merely hold its files.
  2. Record the NAS configuration. Check its operating-system version, CPU architecture, available memory after other services, and any supported accelerator.
  3. Choose a model and workload. Select the variant and quantization based on the task, required modalities, and context length—not model size alone.
  4. Verify runtime support. Check that the intended version of Ollama, llama.cpp, or container environment supports the selected model on that NAS platform.
  5. Test with a representative task. Observe whether the model loads, how much memory remains for the NAS’s other work, and whether response time and output quality suit your use. Treat those as results for your configuration, not all NAS devices.
  6. Configure network access separately. If other devices need to use the model, check the service binding, firewall, and authentication instead of assuming localhost is reachable across the network.
