Video Resolution Sizes and Aspect Ratios Explained

Resolution gives a video's pixel dimensions; aspect ratio describes its shape. Compare common sizes, decode 1080p and 4K, and choose a format for your destination.

Video resolution is the frame’s pixel dimensions; aspect ratio is its shape. A 1920 × 1080 video is 1080p and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Those terms answer different questions, so choose dimensions for the detail your footage and destination support, and choose a ratio that fits how and where viewers will watch.

Resolution and aspect ratio: what each tells you

Resolution is the number of pixels in each video frame. Write it as width × height, such as 1920 × 1080. Labels such as 720p and 1080p conventionally identify progressive video by its vertical pixel count; the exact dimensions make the frame size clear.

Aspect ratio is the relationship between the frame’s width and height. It describes shape, not sharpness or total pixel count. A 16:9 frame is widescreen landscape, 9:16 is portrait, and 1:1 is square. Two videos can share a ratio while having different resolutions.

Common video resolution sizes

The following are YouTube’s listed encode dimensions for its default 16:9 computer-player format. They are platform recommendations for a 16:9 upload, not universal requirements for every camera, display, file, or video standard.

For the standard 16:9 ladder, common choices include 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, and 3840 × 2160. YouTube says its player adapts to each video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device; 16:9 is its standard computer-player aspect ratio. Other ratios, including 9:16, may have padding in some desktop contexts. YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance explains its platform behavior.

What size is 1080p video?

For the common 16:9 format, 1080p is 1920 × 1080 pixels. Its aspect ratio is 16:9 because 1920 divided by 1080 reduces to 16 divided by 9. The “1080” label refers to the vertical pixel count, not the width.

Is 4K 3840 × 2160 or 4096 × 2160?

Both dimensions are called 4K in different contexts. UHD/consumer 4K commonly means 3840 × 2160, a 16:9 frame. DCI 4K is 4096 × 2160, a wider 17:9 frame. Vimeo’s example table distinguishes these formats; when precision matters, give the dimensions and specify UHD or DCI instead of relying on “4K” alone. Vimeo’s compression guidelines include the distinction.

A January 2018 table in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Digital Video Quality Handbook Appendix lists 1280 × 720 HD at 922K pixels, 1920 × 1080 Full HD at 2M, 3840 × 2160 UHD/4K at 8.3M, 7680 × 4320 FUHD/8K at 33M, and 15360 × 8640 QUHD/16K at 132M. These are pixel totals in that dated technical table, not measures of current adoption or availability. Read the DHS appendix.

How to choose dimensions and frame shape

  • Start with the destination. Check the platform and device context. YouTube identifies 16:9 as its standard computer-player ratio, but its player adapts to video dimensions.
  • Match the footage where possible. Choose a target resolution the source can support; enlarging lower-resolution footage does not create captured detail.
  • Choose the shape for the content. Landscape 16:9, portrait 9:16, and square 1:1 serve different compositions and viewing contexts. Ratio alone does not tell you how much detail a frame contains.
  • Account for practical costs. Higher dimensions contain more pixels per frame; consider resulting file size, bandwidth, and processing alongside the target format. There is no universal best resolution or established pixel threshold that guarantees a visible quality improvement.

Should you add black bars to change a video’s shape?

Usually, do not bake padding or black bars into the video just to force a display shape. YouTube Help advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” The platform says its player adapts to differing video dimensions, while embedded bars can interfere with dynamic player sizing. See YouTube Help’s guidance.

Keep a YouTube video stream running from the cloud

If you are preparing a video for an always-on YouTube stream, resolution and aspect ratio describe the uploaded video; they do not determine whether a computer must remain on to keep the stream running. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud rather than relying on your computer or home connection.
