How to Troubleshoot Stream Alerts in OBS and Streamlabs

Find out whether a missing alert is a provider-side event issue or a streaming-software problem, then work through visual, audio, real-event, and echo fixes.

If stream alerts are missing, first send a test alert from your alert provider. That separates a provider or event-configuration problem from an issue displaying the alert in OBS or other streaming software. Then check that the alert source is in the scene you are testing, visible above other sources, and routed to the audio output and tracks you need.

How stream alerts reach your broadcast

OBS Studio does not create or supply stream alerts itself. An alert provider generates the event and supplies an overlay, which streaming software displays—commonly through a Browser Source. OBS’s official explanation is that “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” OBS Project: How do I add alerts to my stream?

This division is useful when troubleshooting: a test that fails in the provider’s own dashboard points toward the provider, its settings, or its connection to your account. A test that succeeds there but fails in the broadcast points toward the source, scene, display, or audio setup in your streaming software.

Start with a test alert and the right source

  1. Send a test from the alert provider. Use its test function before going live. Save any provider-side changes before leaving the settings page.
  2. Confirm how the alert was added. Streamlabs Desktop uses an Alert Box source. In OBS or another streaming application, the documented Streamlabs route is to add a Browser Source and paste in the provider’s widget URL. If you use a Streamlabs plugin for OBS, follow that plugin’s source setup instead. Streamlabs outlines these setup paths in its quick guide to setting up alerts.
  3. Check the scene and source. Make sure the alert source is enabled and present in the scene you are testing. If you have multiple scenes, verify the one used for the test or broadcast—not just a different scene where the alert is visible.
  4. Test again after each change. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which fix worked.

If the test alert does not appear on screen

Check visibility and source order

Confirm that the source is not hidden and is not covered by another visual source. In the scene’s source list, move the alert source above elements that might obscure it, then send another provider test.

Refresh or recreate a stale widget

If the source is enabled and correctly layered but still looks stale, refresh it if your software offers that option. Streamlabs also recommends removing and re-adding the widget source when needed. For a Browser Source, verify that its URL is the current widget URL from the provider rather than an old or incomplete one.

Try the browser hardware-acceleration setting

Streamlabs lists browser hardware acceleration as a possible visual troubleshooting factor. Toggle the relevant setting in your streaming software’s advanced settings, restart the application, and test again. Since changing this setting requires a restart to check its effect, do not treat the result as confirmed until after reopening the software and sending a new test.

Review provider settings and custom code

Check the provider’s alert settings for the event you are testing. If you have customized the widget’s HTML or CSS, temporarily test without those customizations where practical; custom code can affect whether an alert displays. Restore customizations selectively after identifying whether they are involved.

If the alert appears but has no sound

An alert can be visible while its sound is muted, routed to an unexpected device, or absent from the audio track you are recording or streaming. Check each part of the audio path:

Send a test alert after each adjustment. Verify both the local result, if needed, and the recording or stream mix rather than assuming one confirms the other. Streamlabs’ alert and widget troubleshooting guide covers mute state, routing, monitoring, and track checks.

If tests work but real events are missing

A successful test shows that the widget can display a test event; it does not prove that every real event is enabled, eligible, or reaching the provider. Check the event path from platform to overlay:

  1. Check the event type and connected account. Confirm that the missing type—such as the specific kind of event you expect—is enabled and configured for the correct platform and account. If the account connection may have failed, reconnect it through the provider’s current account-linking flow.
  2. Review moderation and filters. Look for moderation delays, profanity filters, custom-word filters, or other rules that may hold back or suppress an alert. Streamlabs notes that an unlimited moderation delay can require manual acceptance before an alert plays.
  3. Consider platform privacy limitations. Streamlabs notes that some subscribers’ privacy settings can prevent an alert from appearing because of API limitations. In that case, the absence of an alert does not necessarily mean the Browser Source or scene is broken.
  4. Test an eligible event and check provider activity. Use the provider’s event or recent-activity view, where available, to determine whether it received the event and whether it was held or filtered. If the provider did not receive it, focus on its account connection and event configuration; if it received but did not display it, return to the source and scene checks.

If alerts repeat or echo

Repeated playback can happen when more than one alert window or source is active. Streamlabs’ guide to fixing alert echoing recommends checking for extra pop-out windows and inactive-scene Browser Sources that continue running.

  1. Close extra alert pop-out windows, leaving only the one you intend to use.
  2. In OBS, open the relevant Browser Source properties and enable Shutdown when not active for alert sources used across scenes.
  3. Send another test. If the echo remains, remove and recreate the source, then test before restoring other alert sources.

When basic fixes do not solve it

After isolating provider settings, scene visibility, and audio routing, check the less common causes Streamlabs lists: cached widget or application data, firewall or antivirus permissions, IPv6 issues, and an incorrect system date or time. Treat these as later checks, not a reason to change several network or security settings at once. Follow the provider’s current instructions for clearing cache or changing system and network settings, and test after each change. The troubleshooting guide is available at Streamlabs Support.

Where the setup differs by streaming software

Setup Where the alert is configured How it enters the broadcast Where to check audio
Streamlabs Desktop In the Streamlabs alert settings Add an Alert Box source Check the alert’s mute and routing controls, then confirm the application’s audio mix
Streamlabs plugin for OBS In the Streamlabs alert settings and plugin setup Use the plugin’s documented source path Check the alert source and OBS audio routing
OBS or another application using a provider widget URL In the alert provider’s dashboard Add a Browser Source and use the provider’s widget URL Check the Browser Source or alert source routing, monitoring, and assigned tracks in the streaming software

These are different ways to host a provider’s alert, not different alert services supplied by OBS. For OBS’s overview of adding provider alerts, see its alerts and chat box tutorial.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live; it is not an alert provider and does not send camera video live. For a prerecorded YouTube loop, the process is to upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, including your computer, OBS, or home connection. The uploaded video streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
