SDI means Serial Digital Interface: a family of professional digital video standards for moving video—and, when supported, embedded audio—between cameras and production equipment. For live streaming, SDI typically carries the camera or switcher signal to an encoder; that encoder compresses the video and sends it over a network using a protocol such as RTMP or SRT. SDI is a production connection, not an internet-streaming protocol.
What SDI does in a live-streaming setup
SDI carries digital video over a serial link, commonly through coaxial cable with BNC connectors in production environments. Depending on the standard and equipment, the signal can also carry embedded audio and ancillary information. Typical devices connected over SDI include cameras, switchers, recorders, and monitors.

SDI is valued in production workflows for low-latency baseband connections and a broad professional equipment ecosystem. Those are interface characteristics, not a guarantee of a particular end-to-end delay: camera processing, switching, encoding, network delivery, and the viewing platform all affect the complete path.

- Check the source output. Find the camera or switcher’s SDI standard, signal level or mapping, resolution, frame rate, and any HDR or color requirements.
- Match the cable and connection. Use the appropriate BNC-terminated coaxial cable and confirm that the cable and installation suit the signal rate and run length.
- Confirm encoder compatibility. The encoder must accept the source’s SDI signal and video format. Check embedded-audio support if audio is carried in the SDI feed.
- Set the network output. Configure the encoder for the destination’s supported protocol and settings. SDI itself does not provide the network stream; encoding equipment performs compression and delivery.
- Verify the complete chain. Confirm the source, encoder input, selected output format, audio handling, and destination protocol agree. Test the stream before relying on it for a live event.
For a model-specific example, Blackmagic Design lists its Streaming Encoder 4K as accepting a range of SDI standards and supporting Ethernet livestreaming using RTMP with H.264 or SRT with H.264/H.265. Those capabilities belong to that model’s specifications; other encoders may support different formats, codecs, or protocols. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact device you plan to use.
SDI generations and compatibility
HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, and 12G-SDI indicate different link generations and data rates, but the generation label alone is not a complete compatibility specification. SMPTE’s standards ecosystem includes 292M (HD-SDI), 424M (3G-SDI), 2081 (6G-SDI), and 2082 (12G-SDI). Standards address electrical interfaces as well as how image formats and ancillary data are mapped onto the link.

Before connecting two devices, check both ends for the supported standard and level or mapping, resolution and frame rate combinations, and any HDR or color requirements. SMPTE’s ST 2082 overview describes single-link 12G-SDI mapping and carriage of multiple lower-rate signals; a 12G label by itself does not establish that every device will accept every format.

BNC-terminated coax is common for SDI, but there is no single safe distance for every cable and signal. Avonic’s overview gives figures of up to 300 m for coaxial cable while separately cautioning that HD bit rates are limited to 100 m. These are figures from that overview, not standards-wide guarantees. Actual reach depends on the signal rate, cable characteristics, connectors, and installation.

Follow the cable manufacturer’s attenuation guidance and the equipment specifications. Include connectors, patch panels, and any equalizers or repeaters in the signal path when assessing a run. Fiber or conversion equipment may suit longer or more demanding links, but the right choice depends on the system.
Signal-conditioning components address different parts of the electrical path. In a Texas Instruments video description dated 17 August 2023, TI explains: “Cable drivers help meet TX requirements for rise/fall time, overshoot/undershoot, jitter, and amplitude. Equalizers help meet RX return loss requirements, while retimers help with jitter and overall signal integrity.”

SDI versus SMPTE ST 2110 over managed IP
SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 are different approaches to moving professional media around a production facility. SDI commonly uses point-to-point coaxial connections. ST 2110 carries media over managed IP networks as separate, synchronized essence streams, including uncompressed active video, PCM digital audio, and ancillary data. SMPTE says the suite was designed to replace long-lived SDI infrastructure in broadcast and production facilities and remains under active development; that does not mean IP universally replaces SDI in every live-streaming setup.
| Decision factor | SDI | SMPTE ST 2110 |
|---|---|---|
| Transport approach | Typically a direct coaxial link between compatible production devices. | Separate media essence streams over a managed IP network. |
| Facility design | Connections and routing are tied to the physical link and installed infrastructure. | Network routing can offer greater flexibility, with corresponding network-engineering requirements. |
| Synchronization | Confirm signal and timing support across the connected equipment. | Synchronization and timing are part of the managed-IP system design. |
| Choosing between them | Consider existing cabling, device interoperability, distance, and the intended signal formats. | Consider the network plant, routing needs, timing design, and the facility’s equipment ecosystem. |
The practical decision depends on the existing facility, physical plant, equipment support, routing needs, and the cost and complexity of building or maintaining the required infrastructure—not on a universal claim that one method is better.

Choosing SDI equipment
When comparing cameras, converters, monitors, switchers, or encoders, check the specific capabilities that affect your signal path:
- Supported SDI standards and levels or mappings.
- Supported resolution and frame-rate combinations, including any HDR or color requirements.
- Connector type, cable requirements, and guidance for the planned run.
- Embedded audio and ancillary-data support where needed.
- Whether the device only converts or monitors a signal, or also encodes and streams it.
- For an encoder, the required network protocols and codecs, such as RTMP or SRT, as supported by your destination and device.
Common SDI problems and checks
- No picture: Check that both devices support the same SDI standard and signal mapping, and that the selected resolution and frame rate are accepted at both ends.
- Intermittent or unstable signal: Review the cable type and length against the equipment and cable guidance; inspect connectors, patch panels, and other components in the run.
- Picture works but audio does not: Confirm that the source embeds audio in SDI and that the receiving device accepts and routes that embedded audio.
- Encoder receives video but cannot stream: Check the encoder’s network configuration, destination protocol, and stream settings. An SDI input alone does not establish that a device can encode or deliver RTMP or SRT.
- Format or HDR mismatch: Compare the source and encoder specifications for resolution, frame rate, mapping, HDR, and color requirements rather than relying only on a shared “12G” or other generation label.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 using uploaded recordings or a playlist, that is a different workflow from sending a live camera feed through SDI. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud stream continues.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops it.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
