RTMP carries a broadcaster’s live video to an ingest service; it usually does not carry the video all the way to viewers. After ingest, a streaming service may process and package the feed into viewer-ready formats such as HLS or DASH, then use a CDN to distribute those playback files to viewers. The encoder-to-platform connection and the viewer’s playback connection are separate parts of the workflow.
The live-video path, from camera to viewer
A typical workflow looks like this:
Camera and audio → encoder → RTMP/RTMPS ingest → processing and transcoding → packaging and origin → CDN edge delivery → viewer’s player

This is a useful model, not a requirement that every provider expose each stage as a separate service. A managed platform may handle the stages behind one interface; a component-based cloud architecture may use distinct services for processing, packaging, and delivery. Cloudflare describes an end-to-end live-video service, while AWS documents a reference workflow using separate services. Cloudflare Stream documentation · AWS Live Streaming solution overview
What happens at each stage
1. Capture and encode
A camera and microphone produce the source media. Encoder software or hardware converts it into a stream suitable for sending to the platform. The encoder is the contribution source; it is not the CDN. Cloudflare’s setup instructions recommend OBS as one software option, but the architecture does not require a particular encoder. - 12G-SDI INPUT WITH STANDARDS CONVERSION – Supports input resolutions up to DCI 4K60 with an SDI input and SDI loop output, plus Teranex-powered automatic standards conversion so any HD or Ultra HD source streams cleanly at any target resolution.
- DUAL MONITOR OUTPUTS – Features both SDI and HDMI monitor outputs with a user-configurable standards converter on both the 12G-SDI Out and 4K HDMI Out, so you can feed a confidence monitor or downstream device at any required format independent of your streaming standard.
- ETHERNET + 5G/4G MOBILE WITH AUTO-FAILOVER – Connect via Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T) or tether a smartphone via USB-C for mobile data, with automatic switchover between connections — ensuring your stream stays on air even if the primary internet connection drops.
- CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.
2. Send the feed to ingest
The encoder connects to the provider’s ingest endpoint using an address and a stream key. The endpoint tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream or authorizes the connection, depending on the provider’s setup. YouTube’s API documentation describes primary and backup ingest addresses and the stream-name/key fields. YouTube LiveStreams API
RTMP is a common protocol for this contribution connection. RTMPS is RTMP carried through SSL/TLS, protecting the encoder-to-ingest connection. For YouTube’s documented RTMPS endpoint, the implementation guide specifies port 443 and SNI for server authentication. That protection applies to the ingest connection; it does not, by itself, define security or access control for the viewer’s playback path. YouTube ingestion protocol comparison

3. Process and create delivery renditions
After ingest, a service can process the incoming feed and encode it into multiple resolutions or bitrates. This gives a player options that can suit viewers with different screen sizes or network conditions. Cloudflare says Stream encodes live video at multiple resolutions; in AWS’s reference workflow, MediaLive performs live processing. The CDN should not be assumed to perform this transcoding: that role may sit in a separate service. Cloudflare Stream documentation · AWS Live Streaming solution overview
4. Package the video and provide an origin
The processed video must be arranged into a format the playback client can request. Packaging systems expose manifests and media segments, often through an origin service. In the AWS example, MediaPackage acts as the origin and supports HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs for playback devices. A managed service may conceal this boundary from the broadcaster. 5. Distribute playback resources through a CDN
A CDN distributes viewer-facing playback resources through an edge network, bringing delivery points closer to viewers than a single origin would be. In AWS’s reference architecture, CloudFront sits after MediaPackage. Cloudflare describes delivery through its Global Network. The CDN distributes the packaged resources; it does not eliminate the need for ingest, processing and packaging, or a compatible player. AWS Live Streaming solution overview · Cloudflare Stream documentation
6. Let the player request and adapt playback
A compatible player reads the manifest and requests the media segments it needs. With adaptive-bitrate playback, the player can switch among available renditions as the viewer’s network conditions change. HLS and DASH are examples of viewer-facing formats in the documented Cloudflare workflow; AWS’s example also lists CMAF outputs. RTMP ingest is not the same as viewer playback
RTMP or RTMPS commonly describes how the encoder contributes a live feed to the platform. The viewer generally receives playback resources through a player-compatible delivery format such as HLS or DASH. In other words, an RTMP stream reaching an ingest server is an early step: the service still has to prepare and deliver content for viewers.
- Encoder to ingest: RTMP or RTMPS is used in the documented workflows for contribution.
- Processing and packaging: the service may transcode the feed and create manifests and segments.
- Origin to viewer: a CDN distributes playback resources that the player can request and adapt to available renditions.
Latency depends on the complete workflow
Protocol labels alone do not establish the end-to-end delay a viewer will experience. YouTube’s protocol comparison says RTMP and RTMPS support normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while its comparison describes segment-based HLS and DASH ingestion as typically having greater latency than RTMP. Those are YouTube’s qualitative comparisons, not a universal latency guarantee or a numerical prediction for every service. YouTube ingestion protocol comparison

YouTube’s HLS-ingest guide recommends segments of one to four seconds and caps their duration at five seconds for that specific workflow. These are YouTube HLS-ingest instructions, not general rules for HLS playback. YouTube HLS ingestion guide
For a real implementation, assess the chosen workflow and settings together. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal end-to-end latency number, CDN cache-hit rate, or performance guarantee.
What to check when choosing an implementation
- Latency target: distinguish the ingest protocol’s stated capabilities from measured end-to-end latency for the complete service and player path.
- Codec and quality requirements: YouTube’s comparison associates HLS/DASH ingest with additional codec options and high-resolution use cases, but supported choices depend on the platform.
- Operational responsibility: decide whether a managed workflow that hides processing and packaging boundaries or a component-based stack better suits your team.
- Resilience: check for primary and backup ingest addresses and confirm how failover is configured. YouTube’s API documents backup ingestion addresses; their existence does not, on its own, describe a complete failover policy.
- Playback compatibility: verify that the target player supports the chosen format and whether the service provides adaptive renditions for variable viewer bandwidth.
Two documented architecture examples
Cloudflare Stream: managed workflow
Cloudflare describes Stream as handling live video from ingestion through delivery. A broadcaster creates a live input and uses its stream key to send RTMPS or SRT; Stream encodes multiple resolutions and delivers through Cloudflare’s network. Playback can use its player or another player that supports HLS or DASH. Its setup guide explains copying the RTMPS URL and key and recommends OBS as streaming software. AWS: separate processing, packaging, and CDN services
AWS’s reference solution assigns live processing to MediaLive, origination and just-in-time packaging to MediaPackage, and CDN delivery to CloudFront. It lists HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs for device playback. This example is useful for understanding separate responsibilities; it is not the only valid architecture.
