For a clear, stable game stream, build a simple OBS scene, make your voice easy to hear, choose output settings your platform and computer can sustain, and test before you go live. The best setup is not automatically the one with the highest resolution or frame rate: stable video and intelligible audio matter more than settings that cause dropped frames.
1. Build a layout around the game
OBS Studio organizes a broadcast into scenes made from sources. A source can be gameplay, a window, a capture card, a webcam, an image, text, or a display. Start with only the elements your format needs; add a webcam or overlay only if it helps your presentation.

- Create a gameplay scene: add the game capture source, then the microphone and game audio you intend to broadcast.
- Check the composition: keep text legible and make sure overlays or camera boxes do not cover important game information.
- Add purposeful transitions: separate welcome, gameplay, break, and end scenes can make a stream easier to operate. Assign scene-switching or push-to-talk hotkeys only if they simplify your workflow, then rehearse using them.
OBS explains scenes, sources, and core setup in its overview guide.

In OBS, open Settings > Audio and confirm the intended microphone/auxiliary device and desktop audio device are selected. Check the audio meters while speaking and while the game is playing, then make a short test recording or private test stream and listen back. Adjust the levels until speech is understandable over the game; there is no universally correct game-to-voice ratio.
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Mute or disable audio sources you are not using to avoid duplicate or unwanted sound.
- Try push-to-talk or push-to-mute hotkeys if they suit your play style, and test them before broadcasting.
- Before buying a microphone, check placement, room noise, and whether your existing headset or mic is the actual limitation. A USB microphone can be a useful option when voice capture is inadequate, but it is not a requirement for every streamer.
OBS supports multiple desktop and microphone/auxiliary devices as well as audio hotkeys; its overview describes those controls. A 2022 UC San Diego study discusses livestream-equipment setup choices, but it is not a current product ranking: The Design Space of Livestreaming Equipment Setups.
3. Choose video settings your setup can sustain
OBS distinguishes the base (canvas) resolution, which describes your layout, from the output (scaled) resolution sent to the platform. Set the canvas for the game and sources you are arranging, then scale the output to the resolution you intend to stream. Choose frame rate for the game and available system resources: OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps, so test rather than assuming the highest setting is best.
Bitrate and platform limits
Set bitrate using both your upload capacity and the destination platform’s current requirements. A high bitrate is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it. Twitch’s official Broadcasting Guidelines emphasize stream stability over pushing quality until frames drop. The OBS overview includes 6,000 kbps as an example Twitch maximum; do not treat that example as a universal or necessarily current cap for every feature or eligibility tier. Check Twitch’s live guidance for your account and setup before choosing a numeric target.

YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder settings are specific to YouTube, not a preset for every service. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the current settings for your destination before configuring OBS.
4. Test the complete broadcast before going live
OBS recommends testing before your first live stream. Run through the actual scenes and check that the intended game, microphone, and desktop/game audio are present, the layout is readable, and motion remains smooth. A short test helps reveal routing or performance problems before an important broadcast.
- Start OBS and select the scene you will use first.
- Check the audio meters and listen to a test recording or stream.
- Watch the output for visual obstructions, missing sources, and stutter.
- If you change resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, test again; changing one setting at a time makes it easier to identify the cause of a problem.

5. Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable connections
- Dropped frames or an unstable stream: lower bitrate and test again. Try another ingest server if the problem persists.
- Wi-Fi connection problems: OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. If possible, test with an Ethernet connection.
- OBS interference: check for software that may interfere with OBS and review the official connection troubleshooting steps.
- Suspected modem, router, cable, or network-path fault: if you are unsure where the fault lies, OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
- Dynamic bitrate: it may help reduce interruptions by lowering bitrate when network conditions worsen, but it can reduce quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide rather than buying replacement hardware before diagnosing the issue.
6. Record with editing and reuse in mind
If you plan to make highlights, OBS offers recording quality presets and hardware encoders where available. Its advanced recording options can use separate stream and recording settings and multiple audio tracks, which can help organize material for editing. Confirm that your intended editing workflow supports the settings and tracks you choose, and check that you have enough storage. Whether your computer can stream and record simultaneously depends on its hardware; test your own workload rather than assuming it will.
OBS’s Knowledge Base covers streaming, recording, audio, filters, and post-production.
