How to Host a Safe Crypto Webinar

A practical host checklist for securing a crypto webinar, protecting attendee privacy, and warning participants about misleading investment claims and scam tactics.

Host a crypto webinar as both a video-conferencing session and a consumer-safety presentation: restrict access, protect what you share, explain any recording, and make clear that no investment return is guaranteed. A webinar invitation is not proof that a crypto offer is legitimate; scammers may use a session or “personalized help” to build trust before asking for money.

Before registration opens: choose the service and set expectations

Compare conferencing services by their current access controls, recording behavior, screen-sharing controls, privacy terms, update process, and moderator tools. Features and defaults change, so verify the settings in the service you choose rather than assuming that a particular control is available or enabled. The FTC’s April 2020 guidance, Video conferencing: 10 privacy tips for your business, recommends reviewing what participant information a service collects and whether it shares that information with advertisers or other third parties.

Collect only what the event needs

Ask for the minimum registration information needed to run the event, and tell registrants how you will use it. Reviewing a provider’s privacy practices is a useful step, but it is not a complete privacy-law checklist. Requirements can depend on the audience, location, and purpose of the event.

Keep the event educational and disclose relevant interests

Do not use an educational webinar as a route to unsolicited investment offers. Explain any speaker or sponsor interests that could affect how attendees understand the presentation. The official warnings discussed here identify scam risks; they do not establish the legal disclosure requirements for every event, sponsor, or jurisdiction.

Secure the meeting before attendees join

  1. Restrict access. Use invite-only access and, where supported, a waiting room or admission control. FTC guidance recommends ensuring that only invited participants can join and notes that passwords or unique meeting IDs may be available.
  2. Use fresh credentials. For recurring events, create a new password or meeting ID for each session where the service allows it instead of reusing old credentials. Confirm how the selected service implements this.
  3. Update the conferencing software. Install updates from the service’s official channel before the session. FTC guidance recommends software updates; CISA also includes updating software among its core online-safety practices.
  4. Rehearse moderator controls. Test how moderators can remove a disruptive attendee, stop participant screen sharing, and direct attendees to verified reporting resources. Controls differ between services.

Protect screens, recordings, and attendee information

Prepare before sharing your screen

Close private documents, messages, password managers, and unrelated browser tabs. If the service supports it, share only the presentation window rather than your whole desktop. FTC guidance warns that open documents and browser windows can expose information and notes that some services let hosts restrict screen sharing.

Set the recording policy before the event

Decide whether recording is necessary. If you will record, tell attendees before recording begins, explain who can access the recording and how long it will be retained, and do not rely on an on-screen indicator as the only notice. FTC guidance cautions that meetings may be recorded or shared without participants’ knowledge and advises people to assume they might be recorded.

Present crypto risks without making misleading promises

Do not describe an investment as guaranteed, risk-free, or certain to make money. The SEC and CFTC warn that claims of high guaranteed returns and little or no risk are red flags on crypto-related investment websites. The CFTC’s Digital Asset Frauds page states: “There is no such thing as a risk-free transaction or a guaranteed money-making opportunity.” The SEC/CFTC investor alert Watch Out for Fraudulent Digital Asset and ‘Crypto’ Trading Websites says claims such as “risk-free”, “zero risk”, “absolutely safe”, and “guaranteed profit” are hallmarks of fraud.

Explain that a webinar invitation, polished presentation, or offer of personal help does not establish that a person or investment is legitimate. The CFTC describes fraud operators using webinars or personalized help to build rapport, solicit an initial payment, and then apply escalating pressure. Attendees should be wary of urgency and requests for more money to release supposed profits or recover principal; the CFTC describes fake fees and taxes in scam scenarios.

Run the session and handle links carefully

  • Do not ask attendees to reveal wallet seed phrases, private keys, passwords, or account recovery codes.
  • Before showing a QR code, wallet address, or link, explain what it does and verify that it points to the intended official domain. The CFTC warns against clicking links or QR codes in unsolicited communications because they may lead to spoofed sites.
  • Keep participant sharing under moderator control and use the rehearsed removal procedure if someone disrupts the session or impersonates a speaker.
  • At the end, provide official reporting directions and a way to report suspicious impersonation of the event or speakers. The FTC’s 2022 educational webinar description discusses scam types and where to report them; the CFTC’s Digital Asset Frauds page provides consumer-protection advice.

Understand the legal limits of a general webinar

Do not tell attendees that one legal classification applies to every crypto asset or transaction. The SEC’s March 2026 interpretation addresses how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions; the legal analysis depends on the activity and asset. A particular offering may raise different questions depending on its details and the jurisdictions involved. Get qualified legal advice for the specific content, offering, audience, and sponsor rather than treating a general webinar guide as legal advice.

Troubleshoot common safety problems

Problem What to do
An unexpected attendee joins Use the admission control or removal feature you tested. Recheck that the session is invite-only and replace reused credentials for future sessions where supported.
A private message, document, or browser tab appears on screen Stop sharing immediately, close the exposed item, and resume by sharing only the presentation window if available. Check the desktop again before sharing.
An attendee asks whether an offer is guaranteed or risk-free Do not validate the promise. Explain that guaranteed-return and no-risk claims are red flags, and direct attendees to official consumer-protection information.
A QR code or link is challenged Pause before displaying or repeating it. Verify the destination through the relevant official domain and explain what the link does; do not encourage attendees to follow unsolicited links or QR codes.
Someone impersonates a speaker or pressures attendees for money Use moderator controls to remove or restrict the person, warn participants not to send money or disclose credentials, and provide reporting directions after the event.
