How do I make money from my videos? There are four main routes: earn a share of platform revenue, get paid directly by viewers, sell products or recommend products for a commission, and work with brands. You can combine them, but none guarantees income: results depend on your audience, offer, eligibility and platform rules.
Four ways video creators can earn

These models have different entry requirements and risks. Platform revenue is exposed to policy and eligibility changes; fan support depends on audience willingness to pay; product income depends on purchases; and sponsorships depend on finding and negotiating suitable work. There is no established universal earnings forecast or comparable average income for these methods.

Platform revenue: ads and subscriptions
On YouTube, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) provides access to monetization features and revenue sharing. YouTube’s February 3, 2025 explainer stated a 55% share for long-form video ad revenue and 45% for Shorts ad revenue. Those are YouTube’s stated revenue shares, not a promise of a creator’s take-home income or a universal rate across platforms.

Requirements depend on your location, account and the feature you want to use. YouTube’s eligibility page lists policy compliance, a supported location, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features and an AdSense for YouTube account among the application prerequisites. Check the current requirements and your account’s Earn area before planning around a feature.
Know what YouTube has announced for 2027
YouTube announced that new applicants seeking ads and Premium revenue sharing will need, from February 1, 2027, either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. From that date, Shorts ads and subscription revenue sharing will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. These are announced future requirements, not requirements to apply before February 1, 2027.

YouTube says channels that fall below the Shorts threshold will remain in YPP and keep earning on long-form content; Shorts revenue sharing can resume if they cross the threshold again. YouTube also says the fan-funding and shopping entry thresholds are unchanged by this announcement. Recheck YouTube’s live eligibility information as the effective date approaches.
Fan support: memberships and live-stream payments
YouTube offers channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers during live streams and Premieres, and Super Thanks on eligible videos and Shorts. Memberships provide recurring monthly payments in exchange for member perks; the other features let viewers pay for interaction or show support in eligible contexts.
The stated baseline requirements include being in YPP, being at least 18 and living in a region where the feature is available. Each feature can have additional criteria, so confirm availability in YouTube Studio and in your location. A view count alone does not guarantee payments: viewers must choose to pay, and creators need to offer a clear reason, such as useful access or interaction.
YouTube’s commerce policy says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools. They are governed by the applicable commerce terms and law, and the legal treatment of money received can vary with the law and the creator’s activity.
Sell products or earn from recommendations
Your own products
If you sell your own goods, videos can introduce the product, show how it works or answer questions that help a customer decide. You control the offer, but you are also responsible for the parts of selling that apply to your business, such as fulfilling orders and supporting customers.
Affiliate recommendations and YouTube Shopping
With an affiliate recommendation, a merchant or platform program may pay you when a viewer makes a qualifying purchase. Enrollment, eligible products, commissions and market availability depend on current program terms; do not assume that tagging or a particular rate is available to every creator.
YouTube describes shopping features that let creators tag products in videos, livestreams and Shorts. Its 2026 announcement said Amazon product tags were announced for the U.S., with expansion planned for India and Brazil and additional markets. An announced rollout is not proof that the feature is currently available in every market. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for current access and terms in your country.

Google’s merchant guidance discusses product samples, promotional incentives, analytics and commission settings from the participating merchant’s perspective. Those details do not establish what any individual creator will earn.

A brand may pay for a placement or collaboration when your audience and subject suit its campaign. A focused media kit can help explain who your content serves and what a partnership could involve; you can then pitch brands whose products genuinely fit that audience. No standard rate or expected deal success is established here, so negotiate based on the specific deliverables and terms rather than assuming an industry-wide price.

This is a platform-specific availability statement, not a promise that every creator can access it or find a sponsor. - Start with the audience need. Identify the problems, interests or community connection your videos serve. A useful product, a membership perk or a relevant brand campaign should make sense for that audience.
- Check access before building a plan around a feature. Verify platform, country, account and feature requirements in the relevant creator dashboard and current terms.
- Match the method to how people engage. Advertising and subscription revenue depends on eligible platform viewing; fan support on willingness to pay; commerce on purchases; and sponsorships on a negotiated fit.
- Account for the work and the risk. Consider the content and customer-service work each method entails, as well as exposure to platform enforcement or policy changes.
- Add compatible income sources over time. Treat platform payouts as one possible component, not a forecast. Test whether an offer suits your audience before relying on it.
Keep monetization and content in good standing
On YouTube, monetized content must meet advertiser-friendly guidelines. Content that fails those guidelines or relevant age and copyright rules can receive limited or no ad earnings. YouTube may withhold or adjust earnings for invalid traffic, fake engagement or Content ID claims; suspension or termination can remove access to monetization.
- Use material you have the rights to use, and resolve copyright issues rather than assuming a claim has no effect on revenue.
- Do not buy fake engagement or generate invalid traffic; these can affect earnings.
- Review advertiser-friendly and age-related rules for the content you publish.
- For commerce or sponsorships, confirm program terms and the disclosure obligations that apply to your campaign and location.
- For fan-funding features, understand the applicable commerce agreement and legal treatment of payments.
