To keep a StreamYard broadcast running from your laptop, change the laptop’s power settings so the computer stays awake for the full broadcast. You can usually let the display turn off separately; the key is preventing the computer itself from sleeping. Then verify the setup with a short test stream before the event.
Keep the computer awake during the broadcast
- Open your laptop’s power or battery settings.
- Find the setting that controls when the computer goes to sleep, and extend the timeout or set it to never sleep for the power condition you will use during the stream: plugged in, on battery, or both.
- If the system offers a separate display timeout, set that to your preference. The screen can turn off while the computer stays awake.
- Apply the change, then run a short test broadcast and confirm the stream remains active after the usual sleep interval would have passed.
The exact menu names and locations depend on your operating system and version. The official StreamYard and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish current, exact Windows or macOS paths, so use your system’s own power settings rather than relying on a potentially outdated menu path. Do not assume closing the lid is safe: lid behavior varies by system and hardware.

Test the full setup before going live
StreamYard describes its service as a browser-based live video production and recording tool. Its setup checklist calls for a laptop or desktop, a connected microphone and camera, and stable internet. StreamYard’s device and equipment guide recommends Chrome and says, “We recommend that you hardwire (Ethernet) to your router.” Its getting-started checklist recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop. These are setup and connection considerations; switching browsers or using Ethernet does not prevent sleep.

If the broadcast still has problems
Sleep may not be the only cause. If the computer stays awake but the stream blurs, lags, or disconnects, check the network, device, and browser. StreamYard’s troubleshooting guide identifies poor or unstable internet as a common cause of blurry or laggy streams and suggests connection and browser checks.
- Unstable Wi-Fi: Consider connecting to the router with Ethernet, as StreamYard recommends. This can help network stability, but it is not a sleep fix.
- Browser trouble: Check that you are using a browser StreamYard supports and try its recommended desktop browser if appropriate. Browser support is separate from the laptop’s power behavior.
- Unexpected disconnection: Check your internet connection and device, then consult StreamYard’s troubleshooting steps. Its guidance distinguishes internet-loss behavior for pre-recorded streams and live studio sessions; it does not promise that a broadcast will continue if the computer sleeps, the browser closes, power is lost, or the network fails.
