Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() with type: 'webp' to render HTML in Chromium and save the result as a WebP file. For HTML you already have as a string, set it with page.setContent(); for a website, navigate with page.goto() first.
Capture HTML as a WebP file
This complete example renders an HTML string, captures the full page, and writes screenshot.webp in the process’s current working directory. Your project needs Puppeteer installed and its browser available for your installation setup.

}The example uses quality 80 as an adjustable setting, not a universal recommendation. Puppeteer accepts a quality from 0 to 100 for lossy image formats; the API does not identify one best value for every image. Omit the option if you do not need to set it.

Navigate before taking the screenshot, then use the same WebP options. Select the navigation wait condition based on how the page loads; Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2, but dynamic sites may need a different readiness condition.

}For a page that keeps making network requests or updates content after navigation, do not assume network idle means the content you need is ready. Use an appropriate condition for that site before capturing.
Choose what to capture and how to return it
- WebP format: Set
type: 'webp'explicitly. Puppeteer also supports PNG and JPEG; screenshot type defaults to PNG. If you provide a path, Puppeteer can infer the type from the filename extension, but setting both makes the intended format clear. - Output path: Set
path: 'screenshot.webp'to save a file. Relative paths resolve from the current working directory. - Viewport or full page:
fullPage: truecaptures the full page; its default isfalse. Leave it false for the current viewport. - Rectangular region: Use the
clipoption when you need a defined region rather than the viewport or whole page. - One element: Use
ElementHandle.screenshot()to capture a specific element. Puppeteer’s guide says it attempts to scroll a hidden element into view. - Transparent background: Set
omitBackground: trueto hide the default white background and permit transparency, as described by the option. - Bytes instead of a file: Without base64 encoding,
page.screenshot()returns aUint8Array. Setencoding: 'base64'when you want a string instead.
These controls determine the capture and output form, but the API references do not provide comparative benchmarks for file size, fidelity, or runtime. Check the resulting file in the viewers and downstream systems you plan to use; identical behavior is not promised for every Chromium build, runtime, or image viewer.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The file is PNG instead of WebP: Set
type: 'webp'explicitly and use a.webppath. Puppeteer defaults to PNG when the type is not specified. - The screenshot is shorter than the page: Set
fullPage: true. If you only need part of the page, define aclipinstead. - The page is captured before its content is ready: Choose a navigation wait condition suitable for the page, or otherwise wait for the content your capture depends on. A single network-idle setting is not right for every dynamic site.
- The output is not at the expected location: Relative screenshot paths are resolved from the current working directory. Use an absolute path or check the directory from which the script runs.
- The capture is opaque when transparency is needed: Try
omitBackground: true; the option hides Chromium’s default white background and permits transparency.
Version and support context
Puppeteer’s current API page in the reviewed documentation is version 25.12.0. The changelog records WebP screenshot support in version 10.4.0, dated September 21, 2021. The screenshot API documents the format and capture options, but does not promise identical results across every browser build or runtime.

Can Puppeteer save a WebP screenshot without specifying quality?
Yes. Set type: 'webp' and omit quality if you do not need to tune it.

Yes. Use page.setContent(html) before calling page.screenshot().
