Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A browser capture does not connect to AWS Elemental MediaLive’s RTMP input by itself. The browser’s camera or screen API gives your application a MediaStream; you then need a sender that emits a protocol accepted by the specific MediaLive input you configure. If that sender uses WebRTC, a gateway or other intermediary may be needed to deliver an accepted input such as RTMP Push. MediaLive does not support RTMPS inputs.
The working path is: capture in the browser, send through a compatible upstream transport, ingest into MediaLive, then configure an output and a viewer-delivery path. The exact sender or bridge depends on your implementation; the documented interfaces do not establish a universal one-click browser-to-MediaLive connection.

How the browser-to-viewer path fits together
- Capture: The browser asks the user to share a camera and microphone, or select a screen, tab, or window. The result is a
MediaStreamcontaining media tracks. - Send: Your application or an intermediary transmits those tracks using a network protocol and format supported by the receiving service.
- Ingest and encode: A configured MediaLive input receives the upstream source; the MediaLive channel encodes it according to its output configuration.
- Deliver: An output destination and, where needed, packaging, playback, and distribution services make the stream available to viewers.
These are separate decisions. Browser capture does not determine the sending protocol, and MediaLive’s encoder is not automatically the viewer-facing player or CDN endpoint. AWS’s MediaLive input guidance describes connecting an upstream system to an input, with input creation and upstream preparation arranged before channel creation.

Camera and microphone
Use the browser’s getUserMedia() API to request camera and/or microphone access. In supporting browsers, the request requires a secure context, typically HTTPS, and the user must grant permission. Ask only for the devices the pop-up needs, handle denial or missing hardware, and verify that the intended audio and video tracks are present before starting the sender.

Screen, tab, or window
Use getDisplayMedia() to prompt the user to select a display surface. It also requires a secure context in supporting browsers. Browser support and whether audio can be captured vary by browser and selected surface, so test the browsers and devices you intend to support and provide a clear fallback if the user declines or stops sharing.
Neither API promises a particular encoder or network transport. A captured MediaStream is media for your application to handle, not proof that MediaLive can ingest it directly.

Match the sender to a MediaLive input
Decide which upstream system will send the stream and which protocol it will use before choosing the MediaLive input. AWS lists input types including RTMP Push, RTMP Pull, SRT Caller/Listener, RTP, and HLS for their documented scenarios. Confirm the endpoint details, access restrictions, and supported configuration in the AWS console and current documentation for your account, Region, and channel.
AWS states: “MediaLive doesn’t support inputs using the RTMPS protocol.” This is specifically a statement about MediaLive inputs; do not assume it describes every AWS service or the separate AWS Elemental Live product.

If your browser sender uses WebRTC
WebRTC and RTMP are different transport choices. If the browser application sends WebRTC while the configured MediaLive input expects RTMP, you need a compatible gateway, relay, or encoder to receive the browser stream and emit a protocol MediaLive accepts. That is an architectural consequence of the documented capture and input interfaces, not a requirement for a particular vendor or a claim that every browser implementation must use the same bridge.
Before selecting a bridge, establish what it accepts from the browser, what it emits, how it handles audio and video tracks, and how its output is connected to the MediaLive input. Verify the exact endpoint and credentials from the actual MediaLive input configuration. Do not treat an RTMP or RTMPS URL alone as evidence of compatibility: protocol, input type, and endpoint configuration must all match.

MediaRecorder is not the live bridge by itself
The browser’s MediaRecorder API records a MediaStream. A recording file is not, by itself, a live network transport into a MediaLive input. If you use recording as part of a workflow, a separate sender or service still needs to deliver a supported live input; do not substitute a completed recording for that step.
Create the input, channel, and output path
- Prepare the upstream sender. Configure the browser application and any gateway or relay so its outgoing transport and media match the intended MediaLive input.
- Create the MediaLive input. Select a supported input type for that upstream source, then configure the endpoint and access details required for the selected type. Follow the current AWS console instructions for your account and Region.
- Create and configure the channel. Attach the input, choose encoding settings, and configure the output destination. These are separate from the browser capture and sender configuration.
- Configure viewer delivery. Decide how the output will be played and distributed. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference architecture uses MediaLive to encode adaptive-bitrate HLS and MediaPackage to package output for HLS, DASH, and CMAF. This is one architecture, not a mandatory topology for every pop-up stream.
Do not assume the output is ready for viewers just because MediaLive receives an input. Confirm the output destination and the player or distribution endpoint viewers will actually use.

Test the full route before inviting viewers
- Check the target browser’s secure-context requirement and exercise camera, microphone, or screen permissions, including a declined request.
- Confirm the selected video and audio tracks are the ones intended. Test screen-share audio separately where it matters.
- Verify that capture ending, device removal, and a user stopping screen share are handled cleanly.
- Confirm the sender or gateway’s transport and output match the MediaLive input type and configured endpoint.
- Check the MediaLive input state, start the channel, and confirm that the configured output becomes available.
- Play the output through the intended viewer path, not only through an encoder-side status indicator.
- Test stopping the pop-up and cleaning up browser capture, sender sessions, and any temporary cloud resources.
Run these checks in the browsers, devices, AWS Region, and output arrangement you plan to use. The available documentation establishes the component roles, not end-to-end compatibility, latency, reliability, or cost for a particular third-party sender.
Common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The browser cannot start capture | Permission was declined, the page is not in a secure context, or the requested device is unavailable. | Use HTTPS, request only needed devices, handle permission denial, and check device availability. |
| Video arrives but audio does not | The selected source or browser did not provide an audio track, or the sender did not forward it. | Inspect the captured tracks, confirm screen/tab audio behavior in the target browser, and check the sender’s audio handling. |
| MediaLive does not receive the browser stream | The browser sender may use WebRTC or another transport that does not match the configured input. | Identify the sender’s actual protocol and add or configure an intermediary that emits a supported MediaLive input protocol if needed. |
| An RTMPS source cannot connect | MediaLive inputs do not support RTMPS. | Use an input protocol and upstream configuration supported by MediaLive; do not assume an RTMPS URL can be used as an RTMP input. |
| Input appears connected but viewers cannot watch | The channel output, packaging, player, or distribution path may be missing or misconfigured. | Trace the output destination through the packaging and viewer endpoint, then test playback from the intended player. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for a different use case: it keeps uploaded recordings or a playlist looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream. It does not take a live browser camera or screen capture and does not replace the browser-to-MediaLive workflow above. If your goal is instead to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube, the steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
- One flat price per slot covers the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
