TV has room to develop a long story and its characters over time; a film can turn a game’s defining energy, atmosphere or premise into a focused cinematic experience. The best fit depends on what makes the particular game work—and on how well its creators reshape that appeal for a different medium.
What makes a game better suited to a series or a film?
Start with the experience the adaptation needs to preserve, not the format’s reputation. A game may draw players through a sprawling story, relationships that unfold over many hours, a striking world, or a compact loop of suspense and discovery. Each points toward different strengths on screen.

Choose television when the story needs room
Episodes can give a long narrative space to develop its characters, relationships and setting gradually. The Associated Press described this as an advantage of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation, whose creators included game creator Neil Druckmann. That series retells the game’s emotional story rather than simply compressing its events into a feature. AP’s 2023 report also recorded 4.7 million US viewers for the premiere and 8.2 million for the season-one finale, based on Nielsen and HBO data. Those are historical first-season figures, not current viewership.

A feature can work when the adaptation can build a satisfying arc around a contained premise or a game’s most distinctive qualities. The British Film Institute (BFI) points to the breezy, kinetic feel of platform games in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog. That does not mean every action game belongs on the big screen; it shows how a film can translate a quality of play without reproducing every mechanic.

BFI’s example of Exit 8 is different: the film turns a game’s looping structure and anomaly-spotting into a claustrophobic viewing experience. It adapts the feeling of the gameplay rather than asking an audience to play. BFI’s feature, dated 3 August 2026, discusses these approaches alongside other recent adaptations.
What should an adaptation preserve—and what can it change?
Fidelity is not a scene-by-scene copy. Games and screen stories engage audiences differently: players may make choices, repeat tasks or explore at their own pace, while a film or series controls what the viewer sees and when. A successful adaptation can preserve a game’s tone, world, character relationships or central idea while changing its plot, pacing and mechanics.

Television can retell a game’s story or use its setting for a new one. BFI describes the Fallout series as telling a fresh story in an authentic recreation of the game world—a way to keep its recognizable setting and tone without repeating a player’s exact route through the games. Animation offers another option: Arcane, based on League of Legends, brings a game world and visual style to television without making live action the default. It appears in Rotten Tomatoes’ television guide.

How to compare adaptations fairly

| Does the adaptation retell or expand? | It may follow a game’s story, reinterpret one part of its identity, or tell something new in its world. |
| Can newcomers follow it? | A standalone film can provide a self-contained entry point; a series can introduce its world over time. The reviewed examples do not establish a general audience-access advantage for either format. |
| How was it received? | Look at the specific adaptation and the response to it, not just whether it is a film or series. Rotten Tomatoes’ guides include both well- and poorly received examples; its film guide requires at least 20 reviews for theatrical releases. |
These questions are a way to think about format fit, not a scoring formula. The cited examples do not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison across genre, budget, release timing or audience, so they cannot establish that one format produces better adaptations overall.

Do movie or TV adaptations perform better with audiences?
Reception varies in both formats. Rotten Tomatoes’ television guide includes acclaimed titles such as Arcane, The Last of Us and Fallout, as well as poorly received shows and examples of disagreement between critics and longtime fans, including around Halo. Its film guide likewise includes adaptations with both favorable and unfavorable reception. The guides’ scores and rankings can change, and an aggregator’s selections are examples—not an industry-wide success-rate study.
Individual releases can also coincide with renewed interest in a game, but those effects do not settle which screen format is better. Sensor Tower reports that Minecraft’s movie release coincided with a 44% increase in mobile in-app-purchase revenue, 36% more console games sold, 9% more mobile active users and 41% more console players. It also says PC Fallout daily active users stayed 225% above pre-release levels for more than three months after the series’ pilot aired. These are Sensor Tower’s measurements for specific releases; its report page does not clearly state a publication year. They should not be read as proof that films or television are generally more commercially effective. Sensor Tower’s report presents the figures in its analysis of transmedia strategies.

Which format should a game adaptation use?
Pick television when the story’s appeal depends on extended character development, relationships or gradual world-building. Pick a film when its most compelling elements can form a focused cinematic arc—whether that means kinetic action, a distinctive atmosphere or a compact premise. Either way, the adaptation must decide what to translate rather than assume that reproducing gameplay is enough. As Druckmann told the Associated Press in 2023, “The stuff that’s exciting to me is we’re always trying to do something new, because the language of what a video game story can be, is broader than any other medium.” The AP report covers his involvement in The Last of Us series.
