Hackers target verified social media accounts because a well-known profile offers both a ready-made audience and borrowed credibility. A fraudulent crypto giveaway or investment pitch posted from a familiar account can seem more convincing than the same message from a stranger. The account becomes a distribution channel for the scam; the badge does not prove that its owner still controls it or approves every post.
Why a verified account is valuable to a scammer
Reach: one post can reach an established audience
An established profile gives a criminal access to followers without having to build an audience from scratch. The FBI says criminals take over established accounts to broaden scam campaigns. The larger and more engaged the audience, the more potential victims can see a fraudulent post.

Trust: a familiar profile can make a false pitch seem credible
Followers may be used to seeing legitimate updates from a creator, public figure, or organization. That familiarity can lower suspicion when the account suddenly promotes a crypto opportunity. In an October 16, 2024 warning, the FBI Atlanta Division said, “The campaigns become more effective because the followers trust the verified accounts.” A verification badge is not a guarantee that the account is secure or that a particular post is genuine.
How crypto scams use a hijacked or fake account
Takeover: the criminal posts from the real account
A common route to account control is targeted phishing or social engineering. The FBI warns creators to scrutinize suspicious login prompts and collaboration emails. A 2022 Identity Theft Resource Center report described cases in which influencers were lured by verification-related phishing or Bitcoin-promotion claims; the scammers obtained account details, changed recovery contact information, and locked the victims out. Those reports illustrate possible lures, not how often each one occurs.

After gaining control, a criminal may publish a fake crypto giveaway linking to a malicious site designed to steal wallet information. Other posts may promote a fraudulent investment, trading platform, guaranteed returns, or manipulated token. The CFTC says criminals create or hack profiles to promote digital-asset fraud, and notes that most digital-asset frauds originate on social media.
Impersonation: a lookalike account pretends to be the real person
Not every scam involves breaking into the genuine profile. A criminal can instead create a lookalike account and imitate a person or brand. The two routes exploit trust differently: a compromised account has the real account’s history and audience, while an impersonator relies on resemblance and may exploit a badge to look official. A USENIX study documents verification-badge abuse in brand impersonation across social platforms; it does not measure crypto scams from hijacked verified accounts specifically.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
Broad social-media fraud figures show the scale of the wider problem, but they are not estimates of losses from verified-account takeovers:
The Tool Desk

Those reports cover social-media-initiated fraud broadly, not just crypto scams or verified accounts.
- The FTC reported that bogus investment schemes accounted for 53 percent of money reported lost to social-media scams in the first half of 2023. More than half of reports about those investment scams involved cryptocurrency payment. These are reported social-media scam losses, not a measure of badge-enabled fraud.
These figures reflect consumer reports and their reporting and categorization limits. The cited sources do not establish a verified-account-specific loss total, worldwide prevalence, or a current platform-by-platform ranking.

How to check a suspicious crypto post
- Pause if the post feels out of character. An unusual message, an implausibly generous offer, guaranteed returns, or pressure to act immediately are warning signs. The FBI and CFTC both caution about urgency and tempting claims.
- Do not follow the post’s link to a wallet, exchange, or investment platform. A giveaway link may lead to a malicious site that tries to capture wallet information.
- Navigate independently to the official service. Use a known website address or the service’s official app rather than a link in the suspicious post.
- Confirm the claim through another trusted channel. Check the person’s or company’s official site or another established contact method. A badge by itself is not independent confirmation.
- Be wary of demands to pay to access supposed profits. The CFTC warns that purported investment profits and withdrawal fees can be part of platform fraud. Check the entity independently before sending money or sharing sensitive information.
How creators and account administrators can reduce takeover risk
- Use a strong, unique password for each social account.
- Enable multifactor authentication (MFA).
- Review active sessions, login activity, and connected devices for access you do not recognize.
- Treat unexpected login prompts and collaboration requests as potential phishing attempts; verify them through a separate, trusted route before responding.
The FBI recommends MFA generally; its cited warning does not endorse a particular method or product. If an account takeover or internet scam occurs, the FBI advises reporting it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
