First identify which failure you have: the Wi-Fi network does not appear, the device sees it but will not join, or it joins but has no internet. Check whether other devices work on the new network, then follow the matching steps below. Those clues help separate a device problem from a router or internet-service problem.
Identify where the connection fails
- Network not visible: The device may not support the band the router is offering, or the network may be out of range or not broadcasting.
- Network visible, but the device will not join: Check the password, saved network profile, and compatibility between the device and router settings.
- Connected, but no internet: Wi-Fi has connected the device to the router, but that alone does not establish that the router has an internet connection. Check another device and the modem or router status.
Also note whether other devices can connect. If several devices fail on the new Wi-Fi, focus first on the router or internet service. If just one device fails, especially on other Wi-Fi networks too, focus on that device. This is a useful diagnostic clue, not a definitive fault test; see Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Google Pixel Help.

Check the device and rejoin the network
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and the device is trying to join the intended network name.
- Enter the current Wi-Fi password carefully. A renamed network or changed password can leave devices trying to use old details.
- Forget the network on the affected device, then select it again and enter the current password. This removes the device’s saved local profile; it does not change the router’s settings.
On Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, choose Forget, and reconnect. Menu labels can vary by Windows version. Apple and Google also recommend removing a saved network and joining it again: Apple Support and Google Pixel Help.

Test another device and another network
Try a second device on the new Wi-Fi. If practical, try the problem device on another Wi-Fi network. If it works elsewhere but not on the new router, investigate the router’s band or security settings. If it cannot join any Wi-Fi network, consult the device maker. These tests narrow down the likely source but do not prove which component is at fault.

Check Wi-Fi band support
Routers may offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz Wi-Fi. The client device must support the band it is asked to use. Microsoft notes that 2.4 GHz is supported by more devices than 5 or 6 GHz; using 6 GHz requires both a compatible Wi-Fi 6E router and a Wi-Fi 6E client. This matters especially for older devices and some smart-home products. If your router provides separate network names for its bands, try one the device supports. See Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting guidance and its Wi-Fi band and home-layout information.
Check security settings against device documentation
Devices and routers may differ in which Wi-Fi security modes they support. Check the manuals or support pages for both before changing the router’s security mode; there is no single setting that can be assumed compatible with every device. Router controls and behavior vary by maker. For example, Google Nest Wifi selects bands based on client compatibility, security, signal strength, and distance; its WPA3 setting is specific to Nest and changing it restarts the network, briefly disconnecting connected devices.

Restart the modem and router
If several devices cannot connect, or a device joins but has no internet, restarting the network equipment is a reasonable next step. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions where available. Microsoft’s general sequence is:
- Disconnect power from the modem and router.
- Wait at least 30 seconds. Microsoft describes this as “at least 30 seconds or so”; it is general guidance, not a timing guarantee for every model.
- Restore power to the modem and wait for its status lights to indicate it is ready.
- Restore power to the router and wait for it to start, then try connecting again.
If the modem and router are a single combined unit, treat it as one device. Restarting temporarily disconnects everyone and any equipment using the network. Microsoft’s steps are in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

If Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet
Check whether another device on the same Wi-Fi can access the internet, and look at the modem or router status lights. If available, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet as a comparison: if Ethernet also has no internet, the issue is less likely to be limited to the computer’s Wi-Fi connection. Microsoft describes Ethernet as a way to help determine whether a PC’s problem is related to Wi-Fi; Google likewise distinguishes joining Wi-Fi from having an internet connection. See Microsoft Support and Google Pixel Help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to check drivers or contact support
If the problem is limited to a Windows PC, check whether its Wi-Fi adapter supports the router’s band and look for driver updates from the PC or adapter manufacturer. For failures that persist after basic checks, Microsoft’s advanced guidance recommends recording the current setup and when the problem occurs before disruptive changes such as deleting profiles, removing drivers, or resetting network components. See Microsoft Learn’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting guide. For router-specific band or security options, use the router maker’s current instructions; for a device that cannot connect to any network, contact its manufacturer.
