1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your VHS capture shows video but has no sound, first trace the VCR’s red and white audio leads to the input your capture software is actually recording. Then check the selected input and audio routing in OBS. For audio that is present but out of sync, compare the beginning, middle and end of a short test: a steady offset and sync drift need different fixes.
Fix a VHS capture with video but no sound
Audio has to travel from the VCR’s left and right outputs, through a cable and input, into the device or software recording it. A working video connection does not prove that the audio path is connected. Some older capture cards also route sound through the computer’s sound card instead of capturing it on the card itself.
1. Trace the audio cables
With the VCR playing, check that its red and white RCA audio outputs are connected to the capture adapter’s matching audio inputs. If your setup uses an older capture card with separate sound-card input, connect its audio pass-through to the computer’s compatible Line In. VirtualDub’s capture documentation describes this separate-audio arrangement; its hardware setup guide shows an RCA-to-3.5 mm stereo cable option. That cable helps only if the computer has a suitable input and the software is set to record it.
2. Select and enable the input that receives sound
In your capture software or operating system, select the actual source carrying the VCR audio, such as the capture device, Line In or Aux. Confirm that it is enabled and not muted, and check its input level. VirtualDub notes that another application or a driver can change the selected input or its level, so recheck these settings if sound disappears unexpectedly.

3. Check OBS source routing and the mixer
In OBS, open the Video Capture Device source’s properties and inspect Audio Output Mode. OBS documents options including Capture Only, output through desktop audio, and a custom audio device. With Capture Only, the source is not heard unless audio monitoring is enabled; monitoring controls listening, not whether the recording contains an audio track. Check whether the relevant source or input is muted and whether its meter moves while the VCR plays. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide for the source modes and buffering setting.
- No meter activity: Recheck the physical path, selected input, device enable/mute state and OBS source selection.
- The meter moves but you cannot hear the tape: Check monitoring and the monitoring output device. A silent monitor alone does not establish that the recording lacks audio.
- The meter moves but the saved file has no sound: Check that the audio source is routed to a recording track in OBS’s output settings, then make and play a short test recording.
4. Add a separate audio source if the adapter needs one
Some USB capture devices expose audio separately from video. If the dongle does not appear as an active audio source in the mixer, try adding an OBS Audio Input Capture source and selecting the dongle’s audio input. On Windows, also check Settings > System > Sound > Input to confirm the device is enabled and not muted. This configuration is a device-specific possibility, not a universal requirement; an OBS forum post describes it for one setup.

- Adopts standard USB2.0 interface (backward compatible with USB1.1). No external power required. Compact and portable for easy storage. Supports UVC1.0 protocol for stable audio & video transmission.
- Supports up to 1920×1080@30Hz (MJPEG encoding) and 3D decoding. Freely adjust brightness, contrast, hue and saturation to optimize your video viewing and recording effect. Output in YUV422 & MJPEG formats.
- Plug-and-play, widely compatible with mainstream capture software, it is the ideal tool for converting old analog VHS footage into digital files. Supports most Third-part Software such as OBS, Potplayer, VCL, XSplit, F-Live etc., easy to use. Compatible with Windows/Mac/Linux/Android systems.
- Comes with a 3.3ft (1m) USB cable. The longer cord avoids limitations from short cables and offers greater flexibility during operation.
5. Follow the capture device’s own audio guidance
For Elgato Video Capture on Windows 10 or 11, Elgato’s OBS setup guide recommends Capture audio only and Audio Monitoring if you want to listen, and says its devices natively operate at 48 kHz with Stereo recommended. Those instructions apply to that product and setup, not every capture dongle. If an Elgato meter stops moving, the guide suggests deactivating and reactivating the source or reconnecting USB; it also describes a device-manager step after a Windows restart. Use that restart procedure only as described for the Elgato device.
Tell a fixed sync offset from audio drift
Record a short sample and compare an obvious sound—such as a clap or a spoken word—with the corresponding action near the beginning, middle and end. Do not assume that one delay setting will fix every mismatch.

Same mismatch throughout: consider an offset
If audio is early or late by roughly the same amount at all three points, the problem is a fixed offset. A sync adjustment may align the tracks; make a new short recording to verify it before capturing a full tape.
Mismatch grows or changes: investigate drift
If sync changes over the recording, a single fixed delay is unlikely to solve it. VirtualDub’s capture documentation explains that separate audio and video clocks can diverge, while VHS signal interruptions or variable source timing can also contribute. Look for audio meter dropouts, dropped or irregular video frames, unstable connections and competing capture or audio applications. VirtualDub also cautions that forcing video to match an audio stream by changing frame rate can make later editing harder.

When a cable, new adapter or service makes sense
Choose a hardware change only after identifying a hardware-path problem. A cable will not correct a muted OBS source or changing sync drift, and a replacement adapter is not a guaranteed fix unless it provides a compatible, working audio path.
| Option | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated USB audio/video capture | The adapter accepts composite video and both RCA audio leads. | Check the device manual and operating-system support; select its video and audio devices in the software. |
| Separate sound-card input | An older capture card handles video while audio is routed separately. | Confirm the computer has a compatible line-level input, connect the audio pass-through and select that input in the software. |
| Replacement capture adapter | The existing device has a failed or unsupported audio path. | Confirm compatibility and how its audio is exposed to the operating system and capture software; device behavior and setup differ. |
| Professional digitization service | You have no compatible computer input or persistent hardware trouble. | Compare handling, availability and total cost for providers in your area; no provider or regional service details are established here. |
Before committing to any option, verify that you can see an audio meter move and hear or inspect audio in a short saved recording. For long tapes, also check sync near the beginning and end so a setup that works briefly does not conceal drift.

Quick diagnostic checklist
- VCR is playing and both RCA audio leads reach the input actually being recorded.
- The operating system and capture software select the correct, enabled, unmuted input.
- OBS shows activity on the intended source or input, and the source is routed to the recording track.
- A test file contains sound; monitoring is checked separately if you need to hear audio live.
- Sync is checked at the beginning, middle and end to distinguish offset from drift.
- Connections, meter activity and frame stability are checked before buying replacement hardware.
