You can digitize VHS tapes at home with free recording software, but the whole setup is not necessarily free: you need a working VCR, compatible video-capture hardware, cables, a computer and enough storage. Connect the VCR to the capture device, select that device in OBS Studio, confirm picture and sound, then record while the tape plays.
What you need—and what “free” means
A computer cannot read a VHS cassette directly. The tape plays in a VCR, which sends analog video and audio through a capture device to a computer. OBS Studio can record from a supported capture device at no charge; hardware, cables, storage or a replacement VCR may still cost money.

- A working VCR that can play the tape and output video and audio.
- A compatible analog-to-digital capture device, with drivers supported by your computer’s operating system.
- The appropriate video and audio cables, plus a USB connection from the capture device to the computer.
- OBS Studio and a drive with room for the recording.
Before choosing hardware, check that its inputs match the VCR’s outputs and that it supports the tape’s video standard—NTSC, PAL or SECAM. Also confirm the driver and audio-capture path work with your operating system. OBS’s official capture-source documentation explains that supported capture devices appear as Video Capture Device sources; on Windows, the device needs drivers that provide DirectShow output.
Connect the VCR to the computer
Composite RCA
Composite is a common connection: the yellow RCA plug carries video, while red and white plugs carry audio. Connect the VCR’s output jacks to matching inputs on the capture device, then connect that device to the computer by USB. Check that you are using the VCR’s output jacks, not its inputs.

S-Video
If both the VCR and capture device support S-Video, you can use it for the video signal. Audio still needs a separate connection, such as the matching RCA audio cables. A connector fitting physically does not by itself guarantee that the device, driver and tape standard are compatible.
The Canadian Conservation Institute’s video-tape digitization bulletin describes the underlying transfer and format considerations. For a practical device-specific connection example, see Diamond Multimedia’s VC500/VC500SE guide.

Prepare the tape and check compatibility
Inspect the cassette and consider its playback condition before putting it in a VCR. Do not run a visibly damaged or contaminated tape in the hope that it will play safely; seek specialist help if its condition raises concern. A working player is essential, and a tape or player problem can interrupt capture or affect the recording.

Capture devices may target NTSC, PAL or SECAM, and some can switch between standards. Check the computer’s driver support as well. Do a short trial recording before committing to a full tape: it is the simplest way to discover whether video, audio and synchronization are all reaching the computer.

Record the tape with OBS Studio
- Install and open OBS Studio. Connect the capture device first so the computer can detect it.
- Add the video source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Video Capture Device. Select the capture device from the device list.
- Set up audio. Depending on the capture device and operating system, audio may arrive through the capture device or a separate audio input. Select the appropriate input and check that sound registers.
- Check the live signal. Play a short section of tape and confirm that the preview shows a picture and that sound is present. If either is missing, troubleshoot before recording the full tape.
- Choose a recording destination and format. Set a drive with enough free space and select a format that suits your editing and storage needs. Diamond’s guide demonstrates MP4 in its VC500/VC500SE workflow; that is a device-specific example, not a universal preservation standard.
- Capture in real time. Start recording in OBS, play the tape, and stop the recording after playback ends. Inspect the saved file for picture, sound, synchronization and completeness.
Digitization takes as long as the tape takes to play. Your file size depends on the capture workflow and chosen format. For context, the Canadian Conservation Institute gives an example of one hour of DV requiring 13 GB; that figure describes DV, not every compressed recording. Its bulletin discusses trade-offs between editing needs, storage capacity and future use, including lossy DV and MPEG-2 examples and an uncompressed AVI workflow.
Check the result and fix common problems
Capture settings depend on the hardware and regional video standard, so there is no single resolution or frame rate that is best for every setup. Diamond Multimedia’s guide, updated September 29, 2026, recommends 720×480 at 30 FPS for its VC500/VC500SE setup. PCWorld’s 2025 guide describes a different HDMI-capture approach using 640×480. Treat those as examples for the workflows described, not universal settings.

- Plug and play, easy to operate, just connect the RCA or S-Video interface of your video recorder to the USB-A/USB-C interface of your computer or notebook and it can be used without any driver. Note: It needs to be used with the acquisition software
- Compatible with USB-A/USB-C interfaces, not limited by computer interfaces, compatible with Windows and Mac OS, supports NTSC, PAL and other video formats, and supports brightness, contrast, hue and saturation control
- Note: This video converter needs to be used with capture software, which can be downloaded free of chargge . We recommend OBS Studio or PotPlayer for Windows and QuickTime Player for Mac. Please feel free to contact us if you need technical support.
- Black picture: Check camera or capture permissions in the computer’s settings. Diamond’s guide also recommends plugging its device directly into a computer USB port rather than an unpowered hub.
- No audio: Confirm the audio plugs are in the VCR’s output jacks, select the correct capture-device audio input, and check microphone or audio permissions.
- Audio out of sync: Record a short sample and check synchronization. Diamond suggests adjusting the OBS audio sync offset for its setup; verify any change before capturing a full tape.
- Comb-like lines during motion: Interlaced source video can look jagged when moving subjects are shown on a progressive display. Diamond’s guide demonstrates deinterlacing controls in OBS; the available settings vary by device and workflow.
These troubleshooting steps are drawn from Diamond’s vendor guide and apply to its described setup, not necessarily every capture device. OBS’s documentation is the broader reference for whether a device is recognized as a usable capture source.

There is a trade-off between smaller, convenient files and larger files intended to preserve more information for editing or future use. Pick according to the storage you have and what you plan to do with the footage; do not assume that a setting demonstrated for one capture device is a preservation standard. Keep the original tape when practical, and make a second copy of important digital files on separate storage.

When a different transfer route makes sense
| Route | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| VCR, capture device and free software | You have access to a working VCR and compatible computer hardware, and want control over the capture. | Check total equipment and storage needs, format compatibility, setup effort and real-time recording time. |
| Purpose-built transfer device | You prefer a dedicated transfer workflow over setting up a computer capture chain. | Confirm supported tape standards, inputs, output format and current device terms before choosing. |
| Professional digitizing service | You have many tapes, lack compatible equipment, or have media that may need specialist handling. | Check current fees, handling and shipping arrangements, privacy terms, and whether the tapes will be returned. These terms vary by provider. |
PCWorld’s 2025 guide to digitizing VHS describes a composite-to-HDMI adapter, USB capture card and OBS as one low-cost approach, alongside dedicated transfer products and professional bulk-transfer services. These are alternatives to evaluate, not guarantees of compatibility or endorsements.
