Short answer: Versionista’s public API documentation does not describe an endpoint for retrieving saved snapshots or change diffs. It documents an experimental endpoint to check an API key and another to add a URL to monitoring. To review detected changes, Versionista documents comparison viewers and email reports; confirm with Versionista before building an automated history workflow.
What the Versionista API can do
Versionista describes its API as a new, experimental feature that may change. Its public documentation lists two pilot endpoints: GET https://api.versionista.com/test to verify an API key, and POST https://api.versionista.com/watch to add a URL for monitoring. It does not document an API endpoint for retrieving stored snapshots or change diffs. See Versionista’s API documentation.

That distinction matters: adding a page to monitoring is not the same as retrieving the changes Versionista later detects. The public documentation reviewed does not specify a historical-record response schema, pagination, or rate limits, either. Because the API is experimental, check the documentation or contact Versionista before relying on undocumented behavior.
How to check your API key and add a URL
Versionista says API keys are managed from the account Settings page. Requests use the REST service at https://api.versionista.com/ and send the key in the X-Api-Key header. The examples below show the documented credential pattern and watch-request fields; consult the current official documentation for the exact response and any changes to the experimental API.
#1 Best Overall
- Notification when a website of your choice changes
- Visual difference of all modifications to a website detected (diff)
- Choose exactly which part or parts of a page to watch
- Check pages even behind logins, HTTP Authentications, form posts or long navigational sequences
Verify the key
curl -i "https://api.versionista.com/test"
-H "X-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
This calls the documented GET /test endpoint to check whether the key works. It does not retrieve change data.
Add a page to monitoring
curl -i -X POST "https://api.versionista.com/watch"
-H "X-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"url":"https://example.com/page","redirect":true,"new_site":false}'
The required JSON field is url. The optional redirect boolean defaults to false; Versionista recommends setting it to true to attempt to follow redirects when determining the hostname, port, and protocol to track. Optional new_site defaults to false; set it to true to put the URL in a new site rather than filing it under an existing site. The documented response indicates an error or provides a page-view URL; the public description does not define a change-history payload.
How to review changes with Versionista
Versionista’s email-alert tutorial describes product reporting and review features, not API endpoints. The documented options include:
- Comparison viewers: summary emails link to viewers for comparing captured versions.
- Summary email schedules: the tutorial says summary emails are sent daily by default and suppressed when no changes were detected in the previous 24 hours. Schedules can be configured.
- Spreadsheet attachment: summary emails can optionally include a spreadsheet of detected changes.
- Instant alerts: alerts can include changed content in the email body, are configured per page, and are off by default. The tutorial describes selectable content formats, including text, text plus HTML, or filtered changes.
These are ways to receive or inspect change reports in Versionista. They do not establish that the API exposes the same data. See Versionista’s email-alert tutorial.
Choose an approach for automated change data
If your workflow needs machine-readable historical records, first ask Versionista whether it supports an endpoint for snapshots or diffs. Ask for the authentication requirements, response schema, pagination behavior, and rate limits before designing an integration. The public endpoint descriptions do not establish those details.
If comparison links or email reports meet your needs, configure the reporting options in Versionista and build your workflow around what those reports actually provide. If they do not, avoid treating /watch as a history API: it is documented for adding a monitored URL.

If you need to capture a page yourself rather than retrieve Versionista’s stored change history, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the API is for capturing pages, not retrieving Versionista change records. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchescurl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common integration mistakes
- Expecting
/testto return changes: it verifies whether an API key works; it is not a history endpoint. - Expecting
/watchto return diffs: its documented purpose is adding a URL to monitoring. The response is described as indicating an error or providing a page-view URL. - Using the wrong authentication location: the documented method is the
X-Api-Keyrequest header. Retrieve the key from the account Settings page. - Assuming reporting features are API features: comparison viewers, spreadsheet attachments, and instant alerts are documented in the product’s email workflow, not as API response formats.
- Depending on undocumented behavior: the API is experimental and may change. Confirm any endpoint or behavior not listed in the official documentation with Versionista before making it a production dependency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Versionista’s documented API return historical website changes?
The public API documentation reviewed does not describe an endpoint for retrieving stored snapshots or change diffs. It documents key verification and adding URLs to monitoring.
Can I use Versionista email reports to review changes?
Yes. Versionista’s tutorial describes comparison-viewer links, optional spreadsheet attachments in summary emails, and per-page instant email alerts.
