Verizon’s satellite texting is real, but it is not satellite internet. The carrier announced the service on March 19, 2025, initially for select Samsung Galaxy S25-series and Google Pixel 9-series phones. Verizon’s current support information lists additional Galaxy Z and Pixel 10 models.
On supported Verizon phones, the feature provides basic two-way text messaging when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. It requires updated software, Google Messages as the default messaging app, an active eligible Verizon account and a clear view of the sky.

The supported phone can send texts to another customer device; the recipient does not necessarily need a satellite-capable phone. Verizon also said at launch that satellite data services and video calling were still being developed or tested. In other words, the announcement was not a promise of satellite broadband, satellite voice calling or unrestricted internet access.

Verizon’s current support material says the satellite service uses Skylo for select Android smartphones. Because Verizon’s compatibility and software requirements can change, the current Satellite SOS and Messaging FAQ should take precedence over the original launch list.
Which Android phones work now?
Verizon currently lists these eligible phone families and models:
| Manufacturer | Currently listed models |
|---|---|
| Samsung | Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Edge, Galaxy S25+, Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 |
| Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL |
This is a dated compatibility snapshot, not a permanent guarantee. Exact carrier variants, firmware, region and account status can affect eligibility. A different Android phone is not automatically supported simply because it has 5G, GPS, a recent processor or a new version of Android. Check Verizon’s current support documentation or device-support tools for the exact model before relying on it outdoors.

How to send a satellite text
- Go outside an area without cellular or Wi-Fi service.
- Open Google Messages and try to send a text.
- When the phone detects that ordinary networks are unavailable, follow the satellite-messaging prompt.
- Follow the on-screen positioning instructions to aim the phone toward the satellite.
- Keep a clear view of the sky and hold the phone as steadily as possible while it connects.
- Continue the conversation in Google Messages after the connection is established.
Expect a slower, more constrained experience than ordinary SMS or RCS. Verizon describes the service as basic two-way text messaging. Do not assume that photos, videos, large attachments, group conversations, read receipts or other RCS and multimedia features will work over the satellite link unless Verizon’s current documentation explicitly confirms them.
Satellite texting and Satellite SOS are different
Satellite messaging is for basic text conversations with contacts. It is initiated through Google Messages when cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Satellite SOS is an emergency pathway. Verizon’s instructions say it can appear when you try to call 911 without network access. The phone presents an emergency questionnaire, and Garmin Response sends the collected information to local emergency services. You may also be offered the option to notify emergency contacts.

How to use Satellite SOS
- Dial 911 normally.
- If the phone offers Satellite SOS because no network is available, select the satellite option.
- Start the Satellite SOS process and answer the on-screen emergency questions.
- Follow the positioning instructions and move outdoors if necessary.
- Maintain a clear view of the sky.
- Continue responding to Garmin Response or emergency-service prompts.
When ordinary cellular service is available, use a normal 911 call. Satellite SOS is not a general-purpose message thread and should not be treated as a replacement for a dedicated emergency beacon in every situation.
Where it works—and why it can fail
There are three separate requirements that are easy to confuse:
- No terrestrial coverage: This is the situation the service is meant to address.
- Satellite visibility: You can still fail to connect if buildings, dense trees, cliffs, terrain or your surroundings block the sky.
- Supported device and geography: An unsupported phone, account or location may never show the satellite prompt.
Weather, phone orientation, movement and temporary satellite-link conditions can also cause delays or failed messages. Satellite texting is not guaranteed to be instant or continuously available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verizon satellite texting versus a dedicated messenger
Verizon’s built-in service is the lowest-friction choice if you already have a supported phone and only need occasional basic texts or emergency backup. There is no separate communicator to buy, carry or charge.
A dedicated device such as a Garmin inReach, ZOLEO communicator or SPOT device remains the stronger option for frequent or high-risk remote travel. Dedicated messengers are designed around satellite communication and may provide tracking, scheduled check-ins, specialized SOS workflows and a separate battery. The trade-off is additional hardware and a separate service arrangement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Verizon when you already use an eligible Verizon Android phone, travel outside coverage occasionally and can tolerate slow, text-only communication. Consider a dedicated messenger when communication is safety-critical, you need tracking or check-ins, or you do not want your only phone handling navigation, photography, power management and emergency communication at once.

Troubleshooting
The satellite prompt does not appear
Check these likely causes:
- The phone model is not on Verizon’s current supported list.
- The required software update has not installed.
- Google Messages is not the default messaging app.
- The phone still has cellular or Wi-Fi service.
- You are indoors or under heavy obstruction.
- Airplane Mode is enabled.
- Your account or plan is not eligible.
- You are outside Verizon’s documented service area.
Move outdoors, turn off Airplane Mode, enable mobile data, install available updates and confirm the default messaging app. If the feature still does not appear, check Verizon’s current FAQ and account support.
The message fails or takes too long
Move to an open area, follow the aiming guidance, keep the phone still and retry with a short plain-text message. Trees, cliffs, buildings and poor alignment can interrupt the link. Unsupported multimedia or messaging features may also prevent delivery.
Bottom line
Verizon’s Android satellite service is a useful backup, not a satellite phone. Supported Verizon customers can send basic texts and use a separate Satellite SOS flow outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, provided they have current software and a clear view of the sky. For occasional trips, that convenience may be enough. For serious backcountry travel, a dedicated messenger still provides better redundancy and purpose-built safety features.
Check Verizon’s current device list and My Verizon eligibility immediately before a trip; the March 2025 launch list is no longer the complete roster.
