The feature behind the July 2025 headline was Google Drive support in Google Search’s AI Mode. Google’s current help documentation now says AI Mode can accept Drive files, PDFs, local files, images and URLs, although access and interface details can still vary by country, language, account and device.
What the original headline meant
On July 29, 2025, Droid Life reported that Google was expanding AI Mode beyond ordinary web searches. The most important planned addition was the ability to use files stored in Google Drive as source material for an AI Mode conversation.

That is different from asking Google to search the public web. You choose a document, then ask AI Mode questions about its contents. It can also provide web context and follow-up answers, so the conversation may combine your file with online sources.
The word “soon” is now outdated. Google’s current Search Help documentation lists PDFs, local files and Drive files among the sources users can upload in AI Mode. Availability is not necessarily identical for every user, however.

What AI Mode can accept
Google currently documents AI Mode as supporting questions using:
- Google Drive files
- Local files
- PDFs
- Images
- Webpage URLs
- Text and voice prompts
- Follow-up questions
Supported input does not mean every document will be interpreted perfectly. Text-searchable PDFs and ordinary documents are generally more suitable than scans, handwritten pages, complex tables, embedded charts or heavily formatted files. Treat answers involving figures, tables and quotations as provisional until you check the original.
Useful things to ask about a Drive file
AI Mode is most useful when the question is specific about the task and the desired format. Examples include:

- Summarizing: “Summarize this report in five bullet points and include its main limitation.”
- Explaining: “Explain this technical PDF in plain English for a beginner.”
- Comparing: “Compare the assumptions in these two documents and identify where they disagree.”
- Studying: “Turn this syllabus into a four-week study plan with weekly goals.”
- Extracting: “List every deadline in this document in date order.”
- Researching: “Use this report as the starting point, then find current web sources that confirm or challenge its claims.”
- Checking: “Separate what comes from the uploaded document from what comes from web sources.”
For important answers, ask AI Mode to identify the relevant page, heading or section. Then open the source yourself rather than relying solely on the generated response.

How to use a Google Drive file in AI Mode
- Open google.com/ai, select AI Mode in Google Search, or open AI Mode in the Google app.
- In the Ask anything bar, open the attachment or upload menu.
- Choose the option for a Google Drive file.
- Select one or more files that the signed-in account can access.
- Ask a focused question about the file.
- Use follow-up questions to request clarification, comparisons, summaries or extracted information.
- Check both the original file and any cited web links before acting on the answer.
The exact button or menu label may differ across the desktop website, mobile browser and Google app. Google’s documented flow is to open the menu in the Ask anything bar and upload or select files, including Drive files.
If the Drive option is missing
- Check that you are signed in to the intended personal Google Account.
- Open the file directly in Google Drive to confirm that the account has permission to view it.
- Try google.com/ai on desktop and the Google app separately.
- Update the Google app or browser.
- Check whether AI Mode is supported for your country, language and account.
- Look in Search Labs if the capability is still being offered experimentally in your region.
- If permitted, download the file and upload it as a local file instead.
Work and school accounts may not behave like personal accounts. Administrator policies can affect access to Google Search-related services. Do not bypass an organization’s permissions by downloading or duplicating a document when its policy prohibits that.
Does AI Mode use the file, the web, or both?
It can use both, but you should not assume that every answer gives equal weight to each source. Google describes AI Mode as supporting follow-up questions and web links, and says its systems can use “query fan-out”—breaking a question into related searches performed at the same time.
That makes AI Mode useful for questions such as, “Does this 2024 report still match current information?” It also creates a risk: the response may blend statements from the uploaded file with newer web information without making the distinction obvious.

Ask explicitly:
- “Answer using only the uploaded document.”
- “Which claims come from the file and which come from the web?”
- “Quote the relevant section and give its page number.”
- “List any current web evidence that contradicts this document.”
These prompts improve traceability, but they do not guarantee a complete or error-free answer.
Privacy and accuracy limitations
Selecting a Drive file is a deliberate data-sharing decision. It does not mean that every file in your Drive is automatically indexed or available to AI Mode; the documented process involves uploading or selecting files. But once you attach a document, its contents are processed by Google’s AI services under the applicable account, service and data-use settings.
Be especially cautious with:
- Confidential employer or client documents
- Legal records
- Medical information
- Financial statements
- Unpublished research
- Proprietary business plans
Google warns that AI Mode can produce incorrect or misinterpreted answers and recommends checking important information against multiple sources. It should not replace professional review, legal or medical judgment, exact calculations, or an audit trail.
For better results, use a text-searchable file, ask a narrow question, upload only the relevant document or pages where possible, and independently verify dates, numbers, quotations and recommendations.

AI Mode versus NotebookLM
Drive support does not make AI Mode a replacement for NotebookLM. The products suit different workflows:

Choose AI Mode when you want to bring one or a few files into a web-search conversation. Choose NotebookLM when you want a more contained, persistent workspace around a set of sources. Neither choice guarantees perfect accuracy.

The report described Canvas as a dynamic side panel for developing plans and organizing information across multiple sessions. A study plan was one example; trip plans, project outlines and structured drafts are other plausible uses.

Canvas is a workspace feature, not the same thing as selecting a Drive file. The current public help documentation emphasizes AI Mode file uploads and notebooks, so do not assume every account currently shows a button labeled Create Canvas.
Search Live
The report also mentioned Search Live, which used camera input through Google Lens for more conversational, real-time interaction. At the time, at least some of those capabilities required enrollment in an AI Mode Labs experiment. Google’s current documentation separately describes real-time conversation features, but labels and rollout conditions may have changed.
Search Live, Canvas, PDF uploads and Drive-file support should therefore be treated as distinct capabilities rather than one combined feature.
Who should use it—and who should avoid it?
AI Mode with Drive files is a good fit when you need a quick summary, want to turn notes into questions or an outline, or need to compare a supplied document with current web information. It is less suitable for large document libraries, detailed permission management, version control, team collaboration, reproducible research or tasks requiring exact numerical certainty.
A Google AI plan is not required simply to use the basic file-upload capability described here. Google offers optional AI plans with higher-tier AI features or usage allowances, but availability and benefits vary by region and plan. Do not purchase one solely to obtain Drive uploads unless Google’s current account-specific information says it is necessary. Additional Google One storage is likewise a storage decision, not an established prerequisite for this feature.
