Google’s Phone app is rolling out a setting that keeps the in-call interface in portrait orientation, even when your phone’s general auto-rotate feature is enabled. It is a small quality-of-life improvement rather than a major new calling capability, but it could eliminate an irritating problem for people who frequently use their phones one-handed or while walking.
What Google’s new Phone feature does
The new toggle is designed to keep the Phone app’s call screen upright when you tilt or reposition the phone during a call. Without it, the interface can rotate into landscape, moving call controls and changing the layout at an inconvenient moment.

That can make it easier to tap the wrong control, particularly when you are holding the phone away from your ear, using it with one hand, or moving around.

In other words, its likely advantage is that you can keep Android’s normal auto-rotate behavior in other apps while preventing rotation during calls. Google has not publicly documented every interaction between this setting and Android’s system rotation controls, so that distinction should not be treated as a guaranteed behavior in every configuration.

It is not the same as turning off auto-rotate
Android’s global rotation control affects the wider device experience. Disabling auto-rotate there can keep calls upright, but it also changes how other apps behave.
Google’s new option is intended to provide a more targeted choice: leave system rotation enabled generally, while asking Phone to use portrait orientation for calls. The exact behavior may vary depending on the device, call mode, and version of the Phone app.
How to look for the setting

If you cannot find it, that does not necessarily mean your phone is incompatible. The feature is associated with a recent Phone app build, but its rollout also reportedly depends on a server-side switch. Installing the newest available version may therefore not activate the control immediately.
Rollout and compatibility
The feature was reported on December 11, 2025, and is being enabled gradually. Availability may depend on your device, account, region, Phone app version, and Google’s staged rollout. Google has not published an official, comprehensive list of supported phones, Android versions, or countries for this particular setting.
The report references Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 devices, but that does not establish that the toggle is exclusive to those models. Likewise, there is no confirmed universal app version number for the feature.
Google says the downloaded version of Phone by Google can have different features from the preinstalled version. The app is supported on Android 9 and newer when downloaded from Google Play, but installing it on another Android phone does not guarantee the same experience as a manufacturer-integrated or Pixel Phone app.
What to check if calls still rotate
- Confirm that the portrait option is visible and enabled in Phone settings.
- Check that the call is actually being handled by Phone by Google rather than the manufacturer’s dialer.
- Try a normal voice call as well as any special call mode you use. Video calling, carrier-integrated interfaces, foldables, tablets, and cover screens may behave differently.
- Restart the Phone app or the device if the setting appeared only recently.
Do not assume that sideloading an APK, reinstalling the app, or clearing its data will force the feature to appear. Because activation reportedly involves a server-side switch, local installation alone may not be enough.
Who should enable it?
This is most useful if you:
- Keep auto-rotate enabled across Android.
- Often make calls while walking or multitasking.
- Use your phone one-handed.
- Find the call interface’s sudden rotation distracting or error-prone.
- Prefer a consistent portrait layout.
You may want to leave it disabled if you regularly prop your phone in landscape, use a foldable or large-screen device horizontally, or deliberately want the call interface to follow the phone’s orientation.

Do not confuse it with Google’s bigger calling features
The portrait toggle is an orientation control, not an AI calling feature. It does not add Call Screen, spam protection, voicemail transcription, Call Notes, call recording, Take a Message, Hold for Me, or Direct My Call.
Those are separate Phone app functions with their own device, language, region, and privacy requirements. For example, Google documents Direct My Call as limited to the US and UK in English on Pixel 3a and later, while Call Notes has specific Pixel and regional requirements.

Google’s Phone app documentation lists these capabilities separately, reinforcing that the new portrait setting is a narrow usability fix rather than a replacement for the app’s more consequential calling tools.

The verdict
Calling this Google Phone’s “best feature” is subjective. For users annoyed by accidental landscape rotation, however, it may be one of the most immediately useful changes because it addresses a simple problem without requiring a system-wide rotation lock.
Its main limitation is availability: the rollout is gradual, the server-side activation details are not fully public, and Google has not documented every edge case. If the option appears in your Phone settings and you prefer consistent portrait calls, it is worth enabling. Otherwise, there is no reliable local workaround that guarantees early access.
