If Chrome’s Send to your devices option is missing, shows no destination, or sends a tab without displaying an alert, start by checking the same Google Account and Chrome profile on both devices. Then confirm Chrome sync is active and that Open tabs is enabled. The devices normally need internet access—not the same Wi-Fi network.
First, identify the failure
Chrome’s cross-device tab feature can fail in several different ways. The correct fix depends on what you see:

- The command is missing: check your Chrome profile, account, sync status, and current interface.
- The command is greyed out: Chrome may not have an active account or usable sync session.
- The destination device is absent: check the other device’s connection, profile, account, and registration.
- The tab seems to send but no alert appears: check operating-system notifications and look in Chrome’s recent-tabs views.
- The device appears but tapping the alert does nothing: update and restart Chrome, then check connectivity and notification restrictions.
- It works in only one direction: compare sync and profile settings on both devices; each Chrome installation has its own account and policy state.
How to send a tab normally
On a desktop, open the webpage in Chrome and use the Share button near the address bar, then choose Send to your devices. Depending on the Chrome version, you may also find the command by right-clicking the tab or page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Android, iPhone, or iPad, open the page, tap More or the system share button, choose Send to your devices, and select the destination. Chrome must be installed on the receiving device, and that device must be signed in to the relevant Google Account. Google describes cross-device tab sharing in its Chrome mobile overview and Chrome tab-sharing guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Menu names and locations can change between Chrome releases, operating systems, and Google’s evolving sign-in and sync experience. Look for the command under sharing or the device-related tab options rather than relying on one permanent menu location.
1. Check the Google Account and Chrome profile on both devices
This is the most important check. Open Chrome’s profile control on the sending and receiving devices and compare the email address shown there. It must be the same Google Account in both Chrome profiles.
Being signed in to Gmail or another Google app is not enough. Chrome’s device list is associated with the account and Chrome profile that is actually being used to browse.
Also check that you are not:
- using a different Chrome profile than usual;
- in Guest mode;
- using an unsynchronized secondary profile; or
- opening the page in Incognito mode.
Guest and Incognito sessions should not be treated like ordinary synchronized Chrome sessions. If you recently signed out, reinstalled Chrome, changed phones, or created a new profile, open Chrome normally, sign in again, and leave it open briefly so the profile can establish its sync connection.
Google explains the relationship between Chrome sign-in, synchronization, and cross-device browsing in its Chrome sync documentation. The available controls can vary by account, platform, and Chrome release.
2. Turn on Chrome sync and Open tabs
Cross-device tabs depend on Chrome’s account and synchronization infrastructure. If customized sync is enabled but Open tabs is disabled, the device may not appear as expected or tabs may not be available across installations.
On Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Open
chrome://settings/syncSetup. - Open the controls for what Chrome syncs.
- Enable Sync everything, or enable Open tabs specifically.
- Return to the webpage and try sending it again.
Depending on the release, Chrome may label these controls Sync, Sync and Google services, or Manage what you sync.
Recommended Free Tools
On Android, iPhone, and iPad
- Open Chrome.
- Tap More and then Settings.
- Open Sync, or the equivalent account and sync section.
- Enable Open tabs, or enable the all-data synchronization option.
If you want tighter control over what is synchronized, enable only Open tabs rather than Sync everything. Syncing everything is simpler, but it may include more Chrome data than you want on every device. Google’s account model is also changing over time: signing in can make some account data available, while history and open-tab syncing may remain separate controls where applicable. See Google’s explanation of cross-device Chrome data.
3. Resume paused or broken sync
If Chrome displays Verify that it’s you, Sync is paused, Sign in again, or a similar warning, complete that prompt before troubleshooting anything more complicated.
- Open Chrome’s profile menu.
- Select Verify that it’s you, Sign in again, or the displayed equivalent.
- Complete Google’s identity check.
- Reopen Chrome and test the feature again.
Sync can pause after signing out of a Google service, changing account credentials, or requiring an additional identity check. Google’s official sync troubleshooting guide specifically recommends signing in again when this happens.
4. Stop sync from turning off when Chrome closes
If the feature works until you quit Chrome and then breaks again, check Chrome’s on-device site-data setting. Google documents this as a possible cause of sync repeatedly turning off after a restart.
Open:
chrome://settings/content/siteData
Alternatively, use:
More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > On-device site data
Enable the option that allows sites to save data on the device. The wording may be similar to Allow sites to save data on your device.
Privacy extensions, automatic cookie-cleaning tools, security software, and workplace policies can override this setting. If it keeps changing back, temporarily review those controls rather than repeatedly resetting Chrome. Follow Google’s sync troubleshooting steps for the current wording and supported recovery options.
5. Confirm both devices are online
Chrome’s feature is generally account- and internet-based. The devices do not normally need to be connected to the same local Wi-Fi network.

- Check Wi-Fi or cellular data on the phone or tablet.
- Disable Airplane Mode temporarily.
- Open a regular webpage on the receiving device.
- Open Chrome on that device and leave it running briefly.
- Retry the transfer from the other device.
An offline device may be missing, appear stale, or fail to receive the handoff until it reconnects. Google does not promise a universal delivery time, so a short delay is possible; a persistent failure points more strongly to sync, profile, notification, policy, or service problems.
VPNs, corporate firewalls, DNS filters, and security software can also interfere with Google services or background notifications. If all devices fail across different networks, consider a temporary account-side or service-side problem instead of performing destructive resets.

6. Update and restart Chrome
Install the latest normal Chrome update on every participating device, then fully close and reopen Chrome. Restart the device if necessary.
- On desktop, use Chrome’s built-in update process and relaunch prompt.
- On Android and iOS/iPadOS, check Chrome’s listing in the relevant app store for an update.
Google’s Chrome mobile page describes the mobile update route. Do not use Chrome flags or install a beta build as a routine fix: experimental settings can be removed, renamed, or unrelated to the production feature.

A missing alert does not prove that the tab was not sent. Chrome may have received the tab while the operating system suppressed its notification. First check Chrome’s recent-tabs or other-device views, then review notifications.
Android
Open Android Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Chrome, and allow notifications. Also review battery-saving or background restrictions that may delay Chrome activity.
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > Notifications > Chrome. Allow notifications and, if wanted, enable alerts on the Lock Screen and in Notification Center. Focus modes and other notification filters can hide an otherwise successful handoff. iOS and iPadOS also impose different background-execution rules from Android and desktop systems, so identical timing should not be expected across platforms.
Windows and macOS
Open the operating system’s notification settings and allow alerts for Chrome. Check Do Not Disturb, Focus, notification banners, and any browser-level notification controls.
After changing permissions, open Chrome on the receiving device and send a new tab. A tab that was sent while notifications were blocked may not produce a retroactive alert.

A missing destination usually indicates account, profile, sync, connectivity, or management trouble rather than a same-network problem.
- Open Chrome on the destination: a newly installed or recently unused profile may not register immediately.
- Confirm the account again: compare the exact email address in Chrome, not only in another Google app.
- Check the active profile: the webpage and the account must be in the same regular Chrome profile.
- Check sync: enable Open tabs and resolve any paused-sync prompt.
- Check the connection: load a webpage over Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Wait briefly and retry: newly installed or renamed devices may not appear immediately.
A device can remain visible after going offline or stopping synchronization, so a stale device list is also possible. If the account is managed by a company or school, an administrator may restrict sign-in, sync, extensions, notifications, or cross-device functions. Contact the administrator rather than repeatedly resetting a managed Chrome profile.
9. Use Chrome’s other-device tabs as a diagnostic
When direct sending fails, check Chrome History for Tabs from other devices, Recent tabs, or a similarly named device section. On mobile, inspect the tab switcher and its recent-tabs or device list.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Other-device tabs are visible: synchronization is at least partly working. The problem is more likely notification delivery or the direct-send command.
- No other device appears anywhere: focus on the account, Chrome profile, sync categories, connectivity, policy restrictions, or a service-side issue.
These views are useful fallbacks, but they do not guarantee that every historical tab will remain available indefinitely. Chrome’s cross-device browsing behavior can vary by platform and release. Google documents related Chrome session behavior in its Chrome for Android documentation.
10. Refresh the Chrome profile connection safely
Use this only after checking the account, sync, site-data, network, update, and notification settings. Refreshing sync can resolve a stale local profile connection, but it is more disruptive than changing a setting.
- Confirm that important bookmarks, passwords, and other data are synchronized or backed up.
- On the affected device, turn Chrome sync off using the account controls.
- Close Chrome completely.
- Reopen Chrome and sign in again.
- Enable the required sync categories, especially Open tabs.
- Test sending a tab in both directions.
Do not select an option that deletes local Chrome data unless you understand exactly what it removes and have verified that important information is available elsewhere. Clearing cookies, browsing data, or sync data too early can create new sign-in and synchronization problems. Community troubleshooting has suggested refreshing the profile for missing or greyed-out device controls, but those community suggestions are not the same as a guaranteed Google support procedure: Chrome Community discussion.
11. Advanced diagnostics and escalation
Technically confident users can inspect Chrome’s synchronization diagnostics at:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
chrome://sync-internals
Look for authentication or synchronization errors and note whether the affected device is registering. The interface and diagnostic details can change, so treat this as an investigation tool rather than a consumer repair step.
If the problem continues:
- Record the Chrome version and operating system on both devices.
- Write down whether the command is missing, greyed out, missing a device, or failing only at notification.
- Note whether other-device tabs are visible.
- Check Google’s service-status information if multiple devices and networks fail simultaneously.
- Use Chrome’s Help > Report an issue route.
Avoid posting sync diagnostics publicly. They can contain account-related or browsing-related information.
What to do if Chrome still will not send the tab
Use a simple fallback while the underlying issue is unresolved:
- Copy and paste the URL into a message or email to yourself.
- Bookmark the page and open the bookmark on the other device.
- Use the operating system’s share sheet.
- Save the page in an existing notes or messaging app that you already use across devices.
- Use another browser’s built-in cross-device feature if you already rely on that browser’s ecosystem.
These alternatives do not repair Chrome’s account or sync state, but they avoid losing the page while you determine whether the failure is local, account-related, policy-related, or service-side.
