To change a video’s background in VEGAS Pro, place the replacement image or video on a lower timeline track and the subject footage above it. Then remove or hide the original background: use Chroma Key for a distinct, uniform color backdrop, or Bézier masking or Smart Mask to isolate a subject in ordinary footage. The right method depends on the shot, and none guarantees clean edges without review.
Choose the method that fits your footage

VEGAS describes Chroma Key, Bézier masking, Smart Mask and Z-Depth as features for removing or separating parts of an image. Availability and controls can vary by version or edition, so check the features in your installed copy. VEGAS Pro Features

Set up the background and foreground tracks
Put the replacement image or video on a timeline track below the subject footage. Put the subject footage on a track above it. The upper track appears over the lower one; removing or masking the unwanted area in the foreground lets the replacement show through. - Place the replacement background on a lower track and the color-backdrop footage on the track above it.
- Apply Chroma Key to the foreground event and adjust its controls while viewing the composite.
- Check that the keyed area reveals the lower-track image or video, then inspect the subject edges throughout the clip.
Chroma Key is the direct choice when the original background is a distinct, uniform color. VEGAS documents the feature, but its feature page does not establish version-specific control names or universal numeric settings. Do not assume one set of adjustments will work for every shot. Isolate a subject when there is no color backdrop
Bézier masking
Use a Bézier mask when manually defining the subject’s boundary suits the shot. Place the replacement background below the footage, create the mask around the subject, and review the boundary across the clip. Moving edges may require attention as the shot changes.
Smart Mask
Smart Mask is an alternative where it is available: VEGAS describes it as a way to identify objects and make masks. Check the mask through the entire clip rather than assuming object identification will be accurate in every frame.

Both options are intended for subject isolation without a uniform color backdrop. The result depends on the footage, and VEGAS’s feature descriptions do not promise a particular edge quality or accuracy threshold. VEGAS Pro Features

VEGAS describes Z-Depth as a way to define a boundary between foreground and background. It may suit a shot where separating areas by depth is the goal, rather than a straightforward overlay. The VEGAS learning page also covers compositing workflows involving tracked layers and Mocha VEGAS planar tracking, which can help maintain an element’s relationship to a moving surface. Review the composite across the whole clip
- Check whether the subject’s edges remain convincing as the subject moves.
- Look for original-background areas that remain visible or mask edges that cut into the subject.
- Check how the foreground sits against the new background throughout the shot.
- If a mask or key stops working well as the scene changes, adjust it or reconsider which separation method suits the footage.
The official VEGAS feature and training pages describe available approaches, but do not give universal settings that work for all footage. The final composite needs to be judged against the particular clip.
