Yes—HDMI is usually better than AV when AV means the yellow, red and white composite RCA cables and both devices have HDMI ports. HDMI carries digital picture and sound in one cable and supports HD and newer video formats. Composite carries analog standard-definition video and separate stereo audio. If you mean component video rather than composite, that is a different analog connection and generally delivers a better picture than composite.
What does “AV” mean here?
AV can mean audio and video generally, but in a connection comparison it often refers to composite RCA: the yellow plug carries video, while red and white carry stereo audio. Sony describes composite as an analog, standard-definition connection, while HDMI carries both audio and video and supports HD video (Sony Support).

Component video is not the same as composite. It uses three video connectors—usually green, blue and red—and separate audio leads. A Philips TV manual describes component as analog but better in picture quality than composite, with HDMI providing higher picture quality in that manual’s comparison (Philips TV manual).

HDMI vs. composite vs. component
| Connection | Signal and plugs | Picture and sound | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI | One cable carries digital video and audio | Supports HD and newer formats when the connected devices support them | Modern compatible sources, TVs and receivers |
| Composite RCA | Analog video on yellow; stereo audio on red and white | Standard-definition video in Sony’s consumer guide; separate stereo audio | Legacy equipment with composite ports |
| Component video | Analog video on three leads, usually green, blue and red; separate audio leads | Better picture than composite in the cited Philips manual, but analog and below HDMI in that comparison | Legacy equipment with component ports |
The exact maximum resolution depends on the equipment and signal format. Component’s three video leads do not imply one universal maximum resolution across all devices.

Why HDMI is usually the easier choice
One cable handles picture and sound
Composite and component video require separate audio connections. HDMI combines digital audio and video in one cable. Philips’s manual describes HDMI as “an uncompressed, digital interface” with both signals combined in one cable (Philips TV manual).
It supports HD and newer formats
With compatible source and display hardware, HDMI can carry HD and newer video formats. The actual mode depends on both devices, their ports and the signal—not just the cable. Composite, by comparison, is a standard-definition connection in Sony’s guide.
It avoids an analog connection when both devices support digital
If your source and TV both have HDMI, connecting them directly is generally the simplest route. An analog connection may still make sense when equipment lacks HDMI or when you need to use a specific legacy input.

Can you connect an old VCR, DVD player or console to a new HDMI TV?
First check the exact output on the source and input on the TV. If the source offers only composite or component and the TV accepts only HDMI, you need equipment that actively converts the source signal to HDMI. An AV receiver can also be an option if it has the right inputs and supports the conversion you need.
Conversion and upscaling vary by model. For example, the Harman Kardon AVR 370 manual documents conversion of composite and component inputs and upscaling to 1080p on that receiver; this is a model-specific capability, not a guarantee for every receiver (Harman Kardon AVR 370 manual).
- Match the converter’s input to the source: composite and component are different formats.
- Confirm that the display has an HDMI input and that the converter’s output is compatible with it.
- Check whether audio is included in the converter path or needs a separate connection.
Will an RCA-to-HDMI converter make the picture HD?
No. A converter changes the signal format so devices with different ports can work together; it cannot restore picture detail that was not present in the original source. Keep the source resolution distinct from any output resolution or scaling the converter advertises.

What HDMI cable should you buy?
Choose a cable category that matches the video mode, refresh rate and capabilities of both devices. HDMI Licensing Administrator lists these category capabilities: High Speed is designed for 1080p and beyond; Premium High Speed certification covers up to 18 Gbps and features including 4K60/HDR; Ultra High Speed supports up to 48 Gbps; and Ultra96 supports up to 96 Gbps (HDMI cable guidance).

Check the source and display documentation for the mode you want, and look for the relevant official category or certification label when it matters. A cable does not improve picture quality when the existing cable already carries the devices’ selected signal correctly.
How to choose the right connection
- Check both devices’ ports. Use HDMI if both have compatible HDMI connections; otherwise identify the exact analog type available.
- Confirm the desired video mode. Check resolution and refresh rate support across the source, connection path and display.
- Account for audio. HDMI generally carries sound and picture together; composite and component setups need separate audio connections.
- Identify any conversion or scaling. If ports do not match, verify that the converter or receiver accepts the source’s exact signal and supports the output the display needs.
- Match the HDMI cable category to the mode. Use official cable category guidance and the device documentation rather than assuming the newest cable tier is necessary.
When is component better than composite?
If HDMI is unavailable but both devices have component connections, component is generally preferable to composite for picture quality. It separates analog video across three channels instead of sending it through the single yellow composite lead. It remains analog and needs separate audio cables, so it is not interchangeable with HDMI.
How large is the HDMI ecosystem?
HDMI Licensing Administrator reports that almost 14 billion HDMI-enabled devices have shipped since the first HDMI specification was released in December 2002 (HDMI technology overview). That organization-published shipment figure indicates broad adoption; it is not a measure of picture quality or the number of devices currently in use.
