A Reddit author reports finding more than 35 text-generation API providers that required no credit card and automatically replenished a free quota. Treat that as the author’s directory and screening claim—not as an independently verified count or a guarantee that every entry still qualifies. To choose a service, confirm its refill rules, usable limits, models, account requirements, data terms, and integration details directly with the provider.
What the “35+” claim establishes—and what it doesn’t
The Reddit post by account ogvelocity4705 says the author reviewed hundreds of providers and kept those that met two tests: no credit card and a free quota that automatically refills. The author describes the focus as text-output models and says the directory’s top-ten table is intended to help people find coding options. The post also points to a GitHub resource listing details such as model quotas, latency, context windows, and base URLs.

The author’s stated rule was: “So, I set a strict standard: no credit card, and the free quota must automatically refill.” That explains the author’s selection criteria; it is not an industry-wide definition of a free tier. The “35+” count is the author’s reported result, and the publication date is not established here. The full directory and each provider’s current terms have not been independently verified.

A service is replenishable only if it restores free usage on a recurring schedule under the account conditions you can actually meet. A signup bonus or one-time trial balance does not meet that test, even if it is enough to try a model at first. Look for the reset interval, the time or time zone of reset, whether unused quota rolls over, and whether recurring access depends on a paid plan or another requirement.

“Free” also does not mean unlimited. Quotas may be measured in different units, and the unit determines what the allowance can tell you about your workload:
| Quota type | What it constrains | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Requests | How often you can call the API, commonly within a time window. | Requests per minute or day, and whether the cap applies per model, account, or project. |
| Tokens | The volume of prompt and generated text. | Whether the limit is per minute or day, whether input and output both count, and whether separate rate caps apply. |
| Compute units | Usage measured in provider-defined units that may vary with the model or task. | How the provider calculates units for the models and operations you plan to use. |
| Credits | A balance that pays for usage according to the provider’s pricing rules. | Whether credits recur or are one-time, when they expire, and whether a payment method or paid account is required. |
These units are not directly comparable. A large request allowance may still be restrictive for long prompts, while a token allowance says little about call frequency unless request-rate limits are also known.

Compare providers against your actual use
Before relying on a directory entry, record the details that determine whether its offer works for your application. A model name or headline quota alone is not enough.
- Refill schedule: recurring daily or monthly allowance, reset timing, and rollover rules.
- Quota scope: unit, amount, time window, and whether limits apply per model, account, or project.
- Model access: which text-generation models are included in the free tier, and whether the model you need remains available there.
- Reliability: published availability and rate-limit behavior, or dated measurements made under stated conditions. Do not treat an undated latency figure as a guarantee.
- Signup friction: card, phone, identity, region, and account-type requirements.
- Data handling: retention, possible training use, and regional or plan-specific differences. Read the relevant terms rather than relying on broad privacy shorthand.
- Integration: API compatibility, SDK support, and the documented base URL for the endpoint you will use.
A dated comparison published September 29, 2026 reports differences in free models, rate limits, card requirements, and data terms, and says some exact limits may appear only in an account dashboard. Its figures are a snapshot, not durable promises. Provider catalogs, limits, billing rules, and data terms can change; confirm consequential details in the provider’s own documentation before building around them.

Verify a candidate before you build on it
- Read the provider’s current pricing and usage documentation. Confirm that the allowance recurs and that no payment method or paid account is required for the specific access you want.
- Check the exact model and account eligibility. Make sure the model is available in your region and tier, then note any separate model-specific caps.
- Translate the quota into your workload. Estimate prompt and response size, expected call frequency, and concurrent requests. Check both volume limits and rate limits.
- Review data terms for the relevant product and region. Identify retention and training provisions that apply to API inputs and outputs.
- Test with a small, non-sensitive request. Confirm that authentication, endpoint, model identifier, response format, and rate-limit behavior match the documentation before integrating real data.
- Keep a dated record and a fallback. Save the terms and limits you checked, and avoid making a production workflow depend on an undocumented or changeable free allowance.
Account type can change what “free” means
Hugging Face’s official documentation illustrates why an account tier must be part of any comparison: it states that Free users receive no included monthly Inference Provider credits, while PRO users and Team or Enterprise organizations receive $2 in monthly credits. The documentation says credits apply automatically before pay-as-you-go usage is billed. That example does not describe every provider; it shows why a “free tier” label is incomplete without the account type, credit rules, and billing behavior.

For coding or chat, filter first for a model that fits the task and a recurring allowance whose unit and reset schedule you understand. Then check latency and rate limits for your expected traffic, access requirements for your location and account, data terms for the information you plan to send, and the API details your software needs. The Reddit list can help surface candidates, but the provider’s current first-party terms should decide whether a candidate truly fits.
