Vault: A Local-AI Prototype for Summarizing Sensitive Legal Documents

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vault is an early prototype for summarizing legal text locally using Ollama and Google’s Gemma 2 2B model. Its author says the app does not call an external AI API, but that design claim is not an independent security audit or proof that Vault is suitable for confidential client material. Treat it as a demonstration, not a validated legal-analysis product.

What Vault does

Mawaddah Dawood introduced Vault in a DEV Community post published October 2, 2026, describing it as a project built for a lawyer relative. Its intended tasks are to summarize long text files, extract dates, and flag potentially sensitive information. The post links to a public GitHub repository whose visible contents include app.py, requirements.txt, and a demo directory; the repository page showed no releases or descriptive project metadata when reviewed.

The documented stack combines Streamlit for the interface, Ollama for local model inference, and Google’s Gemma 2 2B. Ollama lists the Gemma 2 2B artifact as 2.61 billion parameters and a 1.6 GB Q4_0 build, and includes text summarization among its intended use cases. Those are model-listing details, not performance measurements of Vault.

How to run the prototype

The author’s published launch sequence is:

  1. Install Ollama for your operating system.
  2. In a terminal, download and start the model with ollama run gemma2:2b.
  3. From the directory containing app.py, start the interface with python -m streamlit run app.py.

The project post says a standard computer with 8 GB of RAM is a baseline. That is the author’s claim, not an independently tested minimum or a guarantee of acceptable speed. Runtime, available memory, operating system, model quantization, and document length can all affect performance. The author also says this local path has no operation or API-token costs; no independent cost study is provided.

What “local” means—and what it does not prove

The project author describes a flow in which document text is ingested into local RAM and processed by Ollama running Gemma 2 on the computer. The post says no external AI API calls are configured and describes a privacy dashboard intended to show local-processing status. These are statements about the intended design, not third-party verification.

Local inference can reduce the need to send document text to a remote model provider. It does not, by itself, establish that every dependency, telemetry pathway, operating-system service, or later app change has been audited. Nor does it prove confidentiality, protection of legal privilege, compliance with a particular regulation, or safe retention and deletion. The reviewed project materials provide no independent security audit, legal-compliance review, or benchmark.

Whether this approach is appropriate for a particular matter depends on professional duties, client agreements, organizational policies, and applicable law. Do not put real client documents into a prototype unless the responsible lawyer or organization has assessed and approved that use.

What the demonstration shows

The post describes a sample audit of a legal case note involving a possible NDA dispute. The displayed output reportedly includes a summary, a hearing date and evidence deadline, and flags for a phone number and email address. The author explicitly labels the names, contact details, case references, and dates in this demonstration as synthetic. It illustrates the intended workflow; it does not demonstrate accuracy on real legal files.

How to assess Vault before relying on it

Vault is best understood as a local-AI prototype to inspect or experiment with, not an independently certified legal product. Before considering any tool for actual legal work, assess the deployment rather than relying on a “local” label alone:

  • Data path: establish where document text is processed, whether anything is transmitted, and what is retained.
  • Security review: check whether the application and its dependencies have been independently audited; the reviewed materials do not report such an audit for Vault.
  • Document handling: confirm supported formats and practical limits on input size; the project materials reviewed do not establish those limits.
  • Quality: test summaries and extracted details against representative material with a qualified reviewer. No benchmark or comparative accuracy results are provided for Vault.
  • Operational fit: account for installation, updates, device capacity, and ongoing maintenance, as well as confidentiality and professional obligations.
