OpenAI Dots can keep working after you close ChatGPT, and a published 24-hour hands-on test found it useful for repetitive email, scheduling, and project-update tasks. The same test also reported glitches, setup limits, and trouble retaining context—so it is better treated as a supervised assistant than an unattended operator.
What OpenAI Dots is—and what the 24-hour test found
OpenAI describes Dots as always-on ChatGPT agents that work toward goals using a cloud computer and browser. Unlike a standard chat session, a Dot can keep working after you leave the conversation. OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 launch announcement, as reported by MacRumors, says Dots can operate toward goals 24/7, connect to more than 4,000 apps, carry context across channels, and follow custom approval rules.

The October 2, 2026 hands-on report tested a customized Dot called Mini Alfredo for a first 24 hours. It handled email management, meeting scheduling, and project updates, with Gmail and Google Calendar among the integrations discussed. The report found repetitive workflows workable when the Dot had clear access to the relevant apps, but also noted technical glitches, memory constraints, setup skill restrictions, and difficulty retaining context between tasks. These are observations from that published test, not a guarantee of performance for every user or workflow. Read the 24-hour hands-on report.

The practical difference from ordinary ChatGPT is persistence: a Dot can continue pursuing a goal after the chat is closed, using its cloud computer and browser. OpenAI’s launch coverage also describes interactions through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, with context that can carry across channels. The claimed reach of more than 4,000 connected apps comes from launch reporting, not from the 24-hour test exercising every integration.

In the hands-on report, the clearest use cases were bounded, repetitive work: sorting or managing email, helping schedule meetings, and following up on project status. These tasks have visible outputs a person can check. The report specifically discusses Gmail and Google Calendar; it does not establish that the tested Dot completed equivalent workflows in Slack or Teams.
Where the test encountered friction
Setup and skills
The hands-on account reports restrictions around setup and available skills. That can make a seemingly simple handoff less straightforward: the Dot needs access to the right apps and a suitably defined workflow before it can act reliably.

Context and memory
The report also describes limited context retention across tasks. OpenAI says Dots learn preferences over time, but that is not the same as reliably remembering every detail or instruction in a long-running workflow. For important work, state the desired outcome and constraints clearly, and check that the Dot has the relevant context before it proceeds.
Glitches and verification
Occasional technical glitches were part of the reported test. A task that appears to have run is not necessarily a task that is correct or complete. Review sent messages, calendar changes, and project updates rather than treating a completion signal as proof of accuracy.

Approvals and safeguards: useful controls, not a guarantee
Launch materials describe Custom Rules and approval choices, as well as auto-review and read-only proactive research. These settings can shape what a Dot is allowed to do and when it should ask first. They do not prove that the goal or instructions are correct, and they cannot eliminate mistakes. OpenAI Help Center guidance quoted in a September 2026 safety analysis states: “Your dot can make mistakes, including when following your rules.”
For higher-impact actions, use the most restrictive available approval setting and verify the result yourself. Read-only research is a different risk category from sending an email, changing a calendar, or editing a shared project record; allow more autonomy only where an incorrect action is easy to detect and reverse.

A separate 2026 CAVE-Bench analysis reported damage to correct work in 12.5% to 60% of runs, and a reduction from 41.9% to 13.2% when a verified-evidence rule was added. Those figures concern benchmark runs in Claude Code, not OpenAI Dots or GPT-6 Astra, and should not be read as Dots error rates. The analysis’s broader warning is relevant: agents can shift risk from what they say to what they do, rather than removing failure. See Generative Labs’ safety analysis.

MacRumors reported that the September 2026 rollout covered Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users in selected markets. Eligible users received one Dot at no extra charge; conversations did not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, while tasks used plan allowances. A secondary review described ChatGPT Pro at $100 per month as an entry point, noted regional exclusions for Pro, desktop setup, no WhatsApp channel, and no stated price for additional Dots. These are launch-week details, not a promise of permanent pricing or availability. Check the current OpenAI Dots announcement and your account’s plan information for the applicable market and terms.
Best Value
Who should try Dots—and how to judge its value
Dots is most promising if you have recurring, clearly defined work that spans connected apps and benefits from continuing after you leave the chat. The 24-hour report offers evidence for email, scheduling, and project follow-up, but not for every integration or complex, open-ended assignment. Treat it as an assistant whose outputs need review, particularly when actions affect other people or shared records.
To decide whether it is worth using, compare the factors that determine both usefulness and risk:
Quick Recap
- Persistence: Does work continue after you close the chat, and is that valuable for your recurring tasks?
- Computer and browser access: Does the Dot have the access needed to perform the actual workflow?
- Apps and channels: Are your required services supported in your market and account, rather than merely included in a broad integration count?
- Memory: Can it retain the preferences and task context your workflow depends on?
- Controls: Can you require approval for consequential actions and inspect what the Dot did?
- Reliability: Can you check completion and recover from errors without more effort than doing the task yourself?
- Eligibility and total cost: Is Dots available on your plan and in your region, and do task allowances or additional-agent costs change the value?
