Vast Data argues that assembling an AI system from separate ingestion, storage, ETL, vector-search, database and security products creates a dangerous synchronization problem: source records change, embeddings remain stale, and permissions can diverge before an inference response is returned. Its proposed alternative is an integrated AI data platform that keeps storage, vectors, processing, identity and observability on shared infrastructure. That is a vendor position, not an independently verified performance result.
Why stitched AI pipelines drift out of sync
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) depends on several representations of the same information. A source document or database row is stored, transformed into chunks, converted into vector embeddings, indexed for similarity search and finally supplied to a model. Access decisions may be enforced separately at the file system, database, vector index and application layers.

Embeddings can lag behind the source
When a source file is edited or deleted, an ingestion job must detect the change, rerun transformations, regenerate the embedding and update the vector index. Different queues, schedules and failure-handling rules can leave the old vector searchable after the source has changed. A model may therefore answer from superseded text even though the authoritative record is current.
Permissions can split across the RAG path
A user’s rights on the original file do not automatically follow its copied chunks and vectors. A source ACL may be updated while a vector store retains the old metadata, or an application may retrieve a matching vector before checking the user’s current entitlement. VAST vice president of systems engineering Vaughn Stewart described the exposure this way: “What we see there is just too much exposure to having data that’s maybe not in sync between being updated versus the vector embeddings, or maybe not in sync between the user access controls on the source data versus what’s provided through an inference query.”

Every handoff adds movement and operational work
VAST’s May 25, 2026 architecture article characterizes the conventional arrangement as a Kafka cluster for ingestion, a Spark cluster for ETL, a data lake for raw storage and a specialized vector database for AI workloads. Each connection can introduce data copies, network transfers, separate monitoring and another place to configure retention or access policy. Those costs do not prove that a best-of-breed design will fail, but they increase the number of synchronization contracts an operator must maintain.
What VAST proposes instead
VAST describes its AI Operating System as a continuous path from raw ingestion through context analysis to intelligent action. Its documentation combines file, object, block and database services with hyperscale vector and serverless capabilities in one architecture. The product description calls this “a software platform that simplifies and accelerates the entire AI pipeline – from raw data ingestion, through context analysis, to intelligent action – as a continuous, real-time flow.”

The company says Spark and Trino can run on compute nodes directly above shared VAST storage. In that arrangement, a Bronze-to-Gold data pipeline can transform datasets without repeatedly copying them between an independent lake, ETL system and search service. The claimed benefit is fewer movement stages and a common place to observe data and policy state; actual savings depend on workload design, scale and deployment choices.

The engines inside the AI Operating System

VAST says these engines share data, indices, execution, identity and observability. That shared state is the architectural mechanism behind its claim that updates and authorization can be carried through the same pipeline rather than reconciled after independent systems have acted.

How the governance model is supposed to protect RAG results
VAST’s governance material says a patchwork stack may require separate file and object permissions, row- and column-level filters, vector ACLs and application-side checks. Its proposed model carries one access policy from source data through tables, vectors, queries and generated responses.
This is a VAST claim about architectural integration, not proof that every deployment will enforce policy correctly. Administrators still need to define identities, classify data, handle revocations and test denial paths. A unified control plane can reduce policy translation between products, but it does not remove the need for least-privilege design, audit logs and adversarial testing of retrieval and agent workflows.

What VAST DataEnclave adds for confidential workloads
DataEnclave extends the same argument to confidential computing. VAST says it uses hardware-isolated environments and cryptographic attestation before model or data keys are released. Decrypted assets are intended to remain protected in CPU and GPU memory while a workload runs.

Who DataEnclave is for
- Organizations processing regulated, classified or commercially sensitive records that cannot be exposed to ordinary host administrators or shared infrastructure.
- Enterprises running proprietary models or prompts whose weights and context must be protected during inference.
- Teams that need attestation-based controls before releasing encryption keys to a workload.
DataEnclave does not, by itself, guarantee that every frontier model can run entirely on premises. Model licensing, hardware availability, network policy and the provider’s deployment model still determine whether an organization can keep data within a chosen jurisdiction.
Integrated platform versus stitched best-of-breed stack
The trade-off is not simply “one product versus many.” An integrated platform may reduce coordination work, while independent components can offer broader choice and easier substitution. These are the decision axes an enterprise should examine:

What the financing context does—and does not—show
SiliconANGLE reported on October 14, 2026 that VAST raised approximately $1 billion at a $30 billion valuation in April 2026. That is reported financing context, not an audited measure of product performance, customer savings or security effectiveness.

Questions to ask before choosing an architecture
- Measure the maximum acceptable staleness for each data class and identify how an edit, deletion or ACL revocation propagates into embeddings and caches.
- Trace one user request end to end: source identity, retrieved chunks, vector metadata, filtering, prompt construction, model call and final response.
- Test negative cases, including a user whose access was revoked moments earlier and a document deleted after indexing.
- Compare the cost and latency of copying data between services with running compute near shared storage.
- For confidential workloads, verify hardware support, attestation flow, key-release policy, memory protection and where model providers execute.
- Require evidence beyond architecture diagrams: reproducible freshness tests, access-control tests, incident procedures and customer references relevant to your industry.
VAST’s bet is that reducing the number of independent state stores makes synchronization and governance easier to reason about. That can be a compelling design direction for sensitive RAG and agent workloads, but buyers should validate the controls and outcomes in their own environment rather than treating integration as a guarantee.
