- Travel to the cliffs across the grapple point. The Cave Grotto Key opens the door there, allowing the Chapter 4 route to continue.
That order matters. Returning to the church before the rescue, or checking the cliff door without completing the James conversation, does not establish that the trigger has failed; it means the prerequisite sequence has not yet been verified.

First check: is Louis actually marked as rescued?
The most important diagnostic question is whether the game considers Louis’s rescue complete. The published walkthrough makes that rescue a condition of the key handoff, so a player can be physically near the church and still be too early in the sequence.
What to verify in your save
- Return to the location where the rescue takes place and confirm that the rescue objective itself was completed, rather than merely starting the encounter.
- Check the chapter objective, quest text, or other in-game progress indicator available in your edition. The wording may differ by platform or update, so use the state shown by your own game rather than relying on a remembered objective label.
- Note whether Louis is described as rescued, safe, or otherwise completed in the game’s current objective state. If the game still presents the rescue as active, finish that objective before testing the key trigger.
- If you are unsure, make a written note of the exact objective text. That information is useful if you eventually need to contact official support.
Do not jump straight to repeated reloads while this condition is uncertain. A reload cannot replace an unfinished prerequisite, and repeating the same conversation before the rescue is registered produces no useful diagnosis.
Second check: repeat James’s conversation correctly
Once Louis is confirmed rescued, travel back to the Abandoned Church and interact with James again. The documented instruction is to speak with him after the rescue; merely walking into his vicinity is not the same as completing the interaction.

Use the full conversation as the test
- Approach James until the interaction prompt appears.
- Start the conversation instead of moving directly toward the exit or the cave route.
- Choose or advance through every available dialogue response.
- Wait for the interaction to end before leaving the church.
- Check your inventory or key-item list for the Cave Grotto Key, then test the cliff door.
The diagnostic value comes from what James says after the rescue. If his dialogue changes, advances, or clearly concludes a handoff, that is evidence that the game recognized the prerequisite. If the conversation is identical to the pre-rescue version, record that fact; it points toward a progression-state problem rather than a missing pickup at the cave.
Do not assume that seeing James is enough. The documented trigger is the completed post-rescue conversation, so let the dialogue finish before testing the door.

How to confirm that you are testing the correct door
The Cave Grotto Key is associated with the door in the cliffs across the grapple point. It is not described as a general-purpose church key or as an item that opens every locked entrance in Chapter 4.
Use the route as a verification check

Step 3: leave and re-enter through the latest lantern or checkpoint
After finishing the rescue and attempting James’s conversation, leave the church area and return through the most recent lantern or checkpoint available on your route. This is not a documented Cave Grotto Key fix; it is a low-risk way to force the area and its NPC state to load again.

Step 4: reload the latest checkpoint or restart the game
If re-entering the area changes nothing, load the latest checkpoint. If the game does not provide a suitable checkpoint reload, close and restart it, then repeat the James conversation after the save has loaded.

- Allow the save and area to finish loading before interacting with James.
- Complete the dialogue in full after the reload.
- Check both the key-item list and the cliff door.
This step is deliberately conservative. It may clear a temporary loading or progression state, but no source confirms that restarting always restores this particular key. Avoid treating a failed restart as proof that the save is permanently broken; it only means this general recovery attempt did not resolve the symptom.
Step 5: update the game
Check that Valor Mortis is fully updated on your platform. Current guides mention patches that addressed several demo progression and loading problems, but they do not identify a patch specifically for the Cave Grotto Key. Do not erase the save solely because James did not award the item on the first attempt. Preserve the original save, try the documented sequence again, and keep a separate record of what changed after each recovery step. James has no new conversation
Recheck the Louis rescue state first. The handoff is conditional, so unchanged dialogue is consistent with an incomplete or unregistered prerequisite. If Louis is definitely marked rescued, leave and re-enter through the latest checkpoint, then restart and retry the conversation. Record James’s exact wording if it remains unchanged.
James talks, but the key is not obvious in the inventory
Finish every dialogue line, then test the door in the cliffs across the grapple point. The door opening is a practical confirmation that the progression handoff worked. If it stays closed, reload the latest checkpoint or restart and repeat the conversation before escalating.

Confirm that you are at the door across the grapple point described in the walkthrough, not another locked entrance. Then return to the church and compare the Louis objective and James’s dialogue. A locked door by itself does not establish that the key failed to spawn.
The sequence worked once, but the route still appears blocked
Verify the door interaction directly and check the current Chapter 4 objective. If the key is present but the route does not advance, capture the platform, version, chapter, objective text, and James’s final dialogue for support.
