There is no evidence-based universal winner. Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is the premium choice for Apple households and the newest hands-free Siri and home-theater features, but its announced U.S. price is $299. Roku Ultra is the better value if you want broad HDR support, USB playback and an excellent rechargeable remote for $149.99. Google TV Streamer (4K) is the most natural fit for Google TV, Google Home, Matter and Thread users at $149.99.
That conclusion is based on documented features, prices and generation-specific reviews—not a controlled current-generation head-to-head test. Apple’s new model was announced on October 13, 2026, and Roku has replaced the independently reviewed 2024 Ultra with a newer unit that has not yet received the same testing.

Quick answer: which one should you buy?
| Choose this box | Best fit | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | Apple-centric homes and premium hands-free control | A19 chip, Siri AI, three far-field microphones, Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread and 128 GB storage | U.S. price is $299; preorders opened October 13, 2026, with retail availability from November 13. Same-generation independent testing is not yet available. |
| Roku Ultra | Value, format flexibility and local USB playback | $149.99, Dolby Vision, HDR10/HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB playback and a rechargeable backlit Voice Remote Pro | Roku’s current model replaces the reviewed 2024 Ultra. The replacement’s performance has not been independently tested in the cited coverage. |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Google TV discovery and Google smart-home control | $149.99, 32 GB storage, Ethernet, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, casting, Google Home, Matter and Thread | An HDMI cable is required but sold separately. Independent scores refer to the current Streamer, but not to a same-generation three-way test. |
If your priority is a low-risk purchase today, compare the operating system and remote experience first, then confirm that your television and sound system support the formats you intend to use. A streaming box cannot add Dolby Vision, Atmos or 4K quality that the rest of your setup does not support.
Model generations and availability matter more than usual
This comparison spans three different release situations. Apple announced the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. In the United States, preorders began that day, while store availability starts November 13. The announced price is $299. Features and Siri AI language support can vary by region, so buyers outside the United States should check Apple’s local specifications and launch information.

Roku’s current product page lists “Roku Ultra,” but the hardware situation is changing. Tom’s Guide identifies its fully reviewed device as the Roku Ultra (2024) and reports that Roku has since released a new Ultra to replace it. Its published impressions and measurements apply to the 2024 model, not automatically to the replacement. Do not treat a discounted 2024 unit and the new Ultra as the same product without checking the model number and included remote.
Google TV Streamer (4K) is the established current product in this comparison. Google’s U.S. Store lists it at $149.99. Prices, inventory, discounts and regional availability can change, so verify the seller’s exact model before ordering.

Manufacturer performance claims in the table are not independent benchmarks. Apple’s CPU and GPU figures compare the new model with the previous Apple TV generation under Apple’s methodology. Roku’s 30% statement is Roku’s comparison with other Roku players, not a test against Apple or Google.
Apple TV 4K (4th generation): the premium Apple and Siri option
What is new
Apple’s fourth-generation Apple TV 4K uses an A19 chip and adds three far-field microphones. Apple says Siri AI can turn finding something to watch into a full-screen, conversational interaction, and that the microphones make the feature hands-free. Those statements come from Apple vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers; they are launch claims, not independent usability findings.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
The hardware list is unusually ambitious for a streaming box: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet, dedicated AV1 decoding and 128 GB of storage. Find My Precision Finding for the Siri Remote is intended to make a misplaced remote easier to locate. Apple also documents a four-speaker surround arrangement using compatible HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers.
Who benefits most
- Households already using Apple services, iCloud, HomeKit or other Apple devices.
- Viewers who value a fast, conversational Siri search and want microphones built into the box rather than speaking only into the remote.
- Users with a wired network, Wi-Fi 7 equipment or a large app library who can make use of Gigabit Ethernet and 128 GB storage.
- Home-theater owners interested in Apple’s specified four-speaker HomePod arrangement.
Trade-offs
The $299 U.S. price is twice the listed price of Roku Ultra or Google TV Streamer. That premium may be difficult to justify if you only need 4K streaming and your television already has the services you use. Apple’s launch announcement also does not establish every video-format and passthrough detail, so check the current regional technical specification before buying for a particular projector, receiver or HDR workflow.
Apple says the new chip delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to 2× faster GPU performance than the previous generation. These are Apple’s own comparisons; no independent current-generation measurements were cited. Treat them as an indication of Apple’s claimed headroom, not a guarantee that every app will render twice as quickly.

Roku Ultra: the practical value and format-flexibility choice
What the current listing includes
Roku’s U.S. page lists the Ultra at $149.99. It supports 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Atmos, provided the display, content and audio equipment are compatible. Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and 10/100 Ethernet cover wireless and wired networking. Roku says a Premium High Speed HDMI cable is included.
Rank #3
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
The hardware is unusually accommodating for local use. A USB port supports local media playback, which is useful if you keep personal video files on a flash drive or external storage. Bluetooth Headphone Mode can route listening to compatible headphones. The rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro includes remote-finding features, so it is easier to use in a dark room and easier to recover from between-cushion disappearances.
Why it can be the best value
- It documents the broadest explicit HDR list of the three in the cited product information.
- USB playback avoids sending every personal file through a separate media server or casting device.
- The included cable and rechargeable backlit remote reduce the number of accessories you may need to buy.
- Its $149.99 list price leaves room in the budget for a replacement cable, storage device or audio upgrade.
The generation warning
Roku says the current Ultra is “30% faster than any other Roku player,” but that is a vendor claim. More importantly, the independent review evidence available for Roku concerns the Ultra (2024), while Roku has released a replacement. Tom’s Guide says it plans to test the new unit and suggests waiting or buying discounted prior-generation stock only with that distinction in mind. A review score or measured result for the 2024 model should not be presented as evidence about the replacement.
Google TV Streamer (4K): the Google Home and discovery choice
Core hardware and services
Google lists the Streamer at $149.99 with 32 GB of storage, up to 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Ethernet is built in, which helps if the television is far from a reliable wireless access point. The device supports casting from compatible phones, tablets and laptops.

Its differentiator is the Google TV and Google Home combination. Google TV organizes recommendations across supported services, while Google Home control lets the streamer participate in a compatible smart-home setup. Matter support provides a common smart-home standard, and Thread supplies a low-power mesh network for compatible accessories. Compatibility still depends on the individual accessory and the configuration of your home; the presence of Matter or Thread does not make every device interoperable.

Practical limitations
Google requires an HDMI cable for setup and sells that cable separately. Budget for one if you do not already have a suitable cable. The cited specifications do not establish USB local-media playback, so choose Roku if playing files directly from removable storage is a requirement. Google also does not publish a comparable CPU or GPU performance claim in the cited material, making it inappropriate to infer speed from storage capacity alone.
Picture, HDR and sound: match the entire chain
Roku and Google explicitly document Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, alongside other formats listed in their product information. Roku additionally lists HDR10+, HLG and 4K up to 60 fps. Dolby features require compatible content, a compatible display and compatible audio equipment; a subscription service may also restrict which titles carry a particular format.
Apple’s new announcement concentrates on its HomePod surround arrangement and does not provide enough detail here to make a complete format-by-format comparison. If you are buying for a specific HDR television, AV receiver, soundbar or projector, verify Apple’s current technical page for your region instead of assuming that a format supported by Roku or Google is exposed identically by Apple TV.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn every case, use an HDMI input that supports the bandwidth and HDR features you need, enable the television’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode where required, and check that the streaming service’s app and subscription tier deliver the format. A box rated for 4K cannot turn an HD-only title into native 4K.

Connectivity, storage and everyday operation
Networking
Apple has the strongest stated networking specification: Wi-Fi 7 and Gigabit Ethernet. Roku combines Wi-Fi 6 with slower 10/100 Ethernet, while Google provides Ethernet without a stated speed in the cited listing. For most streaming, a stable wired connection matters more than a theoretical maximum; the best choice depends on your router, cable run and internet service.
Storage
Apple’s 128 GB is the largest documented capacity, followed by Google’s 32 GB. Roku’s cited page does not state internal storage. More storage helps with installed apps and downloaded data, but streaming video is generally delivered on demand, so capacity should not be treated as a direct picture-quality measure.
Remote and listening features
Roku’s rechargeable backlit Voice Remote Pro and Bluetooth Headphone Mode are strong quality-of-life features for late-night viewing. Apple adds Precision Finding for the Siri Remote and hands-free microphones in the box. Google supports remote ringing or finding. Decide whether you value private headphone listening, voice control from across the room or simply a remote that is easy to locate.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide gives generation-specific overall scores: Roku Ultra (2024) 78, Google TV Streamer (4K) 69 and Apple TV 4K (128GB, 2022) 68. Its overall score combines test results and evaluates picture quality through image clarity, color accuracy and contrast; ease of use covers daily operation; and features include supported services, assistant support, gaming-controller support and wireless audio, video casting or mirroring.
| Consumer Reports model | Overall score | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Ultra (2024) | 78 | Evidence about the 2024 model only, not Roku’s replacement Ultra. |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | 69 | Evidence for the named Streamer, but not a controlled comparison with Apple’s 2026 model or the replacement Roku. |
| Apple TV 4K (128GB, 2022) | 68 | Evidence for the 2022 Apple device, not the announced fourth generation. |
What Hi-Fi? rates the Apple TV 4K (2022) five stars and Google TV Streamer four stars. Its reviewers praise Apple’s picture, audio and responsive interface; they describe Google’s image as natural and balanced while criticizing its sound and picture dynamism. Those are subjective reviews of the named older Apple model and current Google model, not tests of Apple’s fourth generation and not a direct three-way laboratory result.
Consequently, no cited source establishes that one current-generation box is fastest, has the best picture or wins every use case. The responsible comparison is feature fit plus model-specific evidence.
Choose by household and viewing habits
Pick Apple TV 4K if
- Your household already relies on Apple services, iCloud or HomeKit.
- You want Siri AI search with far-field microphones and are willing to pay $299.
- You plan to use Apple’s compatible HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) four-speaker arrangement.
- You want the newest announced Apple hardware and can wait until November 13, 2026, for U.S. retail availability.
Pick Roku Ultra if
- You want explicit support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos and 4K up to 60 fps in one $149.99 product listing.
- You need USB local-media playback or Bluetooth headphone listening.
- You prefer a rechargeable, backlit remote and want an HDMI cable included.
- You understand that current independent reviews concern the 2024 Ultra, not the replacement now listed by Roku.
Pick Google TV Streamer if
- You want Google TV recommendations and casting from phones, tablets or laptops.
- Your smart home uses Google Home, Matter or Thread-compatible accessories.
- You want 32 GB storage and Ethernet at the same $149.99 list price as Roku.
- You already have, or are prepared to purchase, a compatible HDMI cable.
Setup and compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact model. Confirm Apple TV 4K (4th generation), the current Roku Ultra replacement or Google TV Streamer (4K), rather than relying on a retailer’s generic title.
- Check the television. Confirm a free HDMI input and support for the resolution and HDR formats you intend to use.
- Check the audio path. Verify that your soundbar, receiver or speakers support the desired Dolby format. Apple’s HomePod surround option requires compatible HomePod hardware.
- Plan the network. Use Ethernet when practical, especially for a distant television or congested wireless environment. Apple lists Gigabit Ethernet; Roku lists 10/100 Ethernet; Google includes Ethernet.
- Budget for accessories. Google requires an HDMI cable sold separately. Roku says its Premium High Speed HDMI cable is included. Confirm Apple’s box contents for your market.
- Verify regional software. Streaming catalogs, Siri AI languages, apps and smart-home functions can vary by country and may change after launch.
- Test the account ecosystem. Sign in to the services, Apple, Google or smart-home platforms you actually use before moving every household profile to the new device.
Bottom line by price and timing
At $149.99, Roku Ultra and Google TV Streamer offer the clearest value for a typical 4K television, but they serve different priorities: Roku emphasizes format breadth, USB playback and its remote, while Google emphasizes discovery, casting and smart-home control. Apple TV 4K (4th generation) costs $299 because it adds a newer chip, hands-free Siri AI, expanded wireless and wired connectivity, and an Apple-focused home-theater path. Its value depends on whether those features matter to your household, and its real-world performance remains unverified by the cited independent tests until reviewers evaluate the new hardware.
